The Super Duper Co-Razy Parker Penman Sapphire - Blue - Comparisons Psp

Recommended Posts

Here are some photos from the iPhone of my comparisons between the PPS some other inks on three papers: Miguel Rius supplied by Amber, Tomoe River, Mohawk via Linen.

The inks and pens used are:

1. PPS, Edison Collier (F-steel)

2. Sailor Kingdom Note Garrulous lidthi "Lidith's Jay", Edison Nouvelle Premiere (F-steel)

3. OS Nitrogen, Pelikan M400 (supposedly an F, but writes like a B)

4. Sailor Kobe #14 Maya lapis, Aurora Ipsilon (M)

5. Noodler's Liberty's Elysium, Edison Nouvelle Premiere (M-steel)

6. Pelikan 4001 Konigsblau, Pelikan M201 (B)

7. Aurora Blue, Parker Vacumatic (M)

Like some others, I do not find NLE to be a close match for PPS. None of these inks match the PPS color, but the KN and Kobe ink have excellent handling and are fairly close though leaning towards the red side of blue. It'll be interesting to see if someone finds a close match.

If PPS was on the market today I'd definitely buy a bottle, but honestly while I like it's handling and the color is unique amongst the blues in my collection, I wouldn't pay $100+ for it. But it's great to give this vintage ink try.

where the image has the color juiced up too much for the Pelikan Konigsblau ink.

Here is an angled shot where I think you can see the differences between the inks more clearly.

Thank you white_lotus for the great comparison, I have enjoyed all the comparisons so far and it's very nice to see how same inks give different results with different pen/paper combinations.

This time the test sheets will be mailed to Northstar for him to review. You can PM Northstar for his address or you can send them to me if the need to be scanned first.

Also Northstar is looking for inky penpals so you can drop him a line in the letter or online if you would like a reply to your CRV.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I would point out that quite a number of dyes and pigments that were available through the 1990s have been discontinued (for a variety of reasons). This is a professional annoyance to me in my job as a chemist in the displays business, but it might also explain why it has been so hard to duplicate the Parker Penman inks. I would guess that some of the limited edition inks that Noodlers has done were made with leftover lots of these discontinued dyes and that is why when the dye(s) are gone the ink is gone forever.

Dear People, Personages, Others and TheRealScubaSteve.

I present for your delectation three new mini-Co-Razy views of Parker Penman Sapphire.

I have done one each on Kokuyo Campus Refill paper, Fuji Xerox Sustainable Environment copy paper and Tomoe River White.

The inks involved, as well as the PPS, are Sailor Bung Box Sapphire (Hatsukoi), Noodler's Liberty's Elysium and the blends Faux Penman Sapphire #9 and Noodler's Inkyman Sapphire.

So, sit back, clean your glasses (or refill them, as appropriate) and prepare to be amazed.

One of the things this shows is that the best match to PPS depends on the paper. Which may explain some of the variation we get in people's estimations of best match. It also shows that scanning to get something near what you see with your eyes is difficult. And the paper it is sitting on affects the results. Even when I say "Don't make any compensation, it makes the FX paper look blue-grey compared to the Kokuyo Campus, and it makes the Tomoe look beige when it isn't.

I know the scanner I want --

but I don't have a spare $30,000

Awesome. Thank you. Of the papers you used, I only have Tomoe River, and thereon, the two faux mixtures are a near perfect match in looks, from what I can see.

It's good enough for me. I don't need the other two look-alikes. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I think I can drop out now.

Thanks to the ever-enabling amberleadavis, I was provided a sample of the infamous PPS to play with. Play, I did, and enjoyed every stroke (boy, THAT sounds much more provocative than the actual experience....).

For my returned sheets (part of the TWSBI loaner program), I searched out similar inks in my collection of samples. Here's what surfaced:

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

I am so glad you had fun!!! I admit, I've enjoyed PPS, and I've enjoyed the enabling even more. I loved Blue Velvet.

Late as usual.

This first image is a picture, from an iPhone, shot at a 48 degree angle in normal room lighting. I wanted to post this as I noticed sheen on both the PPS and the Faux PPS #9. The Faux ink had more sheen than the PPS, although both showed a red sheen.

Also on the page are (bottom) BB Omaezaki Lapis-Lazuli. In the the small box is BB Sapphire. I wanted to put this on the page as I've been told by a lot of people that its a ringer for PPS.

The paper is Tomoe River White. Except for the bottom bit on the page, this was done with a dip pen, a 10 kt gold generic nib that is unmarked or stamped.

My conclusion is that I liked the #9. It had more sheen, was very highly lubricated, was wetter in even a scratchy dip pen.

I hadn't picked up on the sheen before, but FPS#9 is wetter than the original, which was designed to dry quickly. It does tend to bleed through on marginal papers a bit more than PPS.

The sheen is light red with hints of chartreuse, you it is very light in PPS and somewhat light in the Faux. I could only see it from a very steep angle.

.... I loved Blue Velvet.

When you get t his on your hands, whilst cleaning your pens, do you walk around singing "She wore Blue Velvet...."?
