The Super Duper Co-Razy Parker Penman Sapphire - Blue - Comparisons Psp

Hey Tas -- the PPS is extraordinary! As someone mentioned earlier, I was sure that Ottoman Azure would be a close match, but no! And PPS just glows from within! How does it do that?

In my scan Ottoman Azure came out bluer -- it has a very slight green in it.

Thanks, Amberlea! What a co-razy review!

I've done a second sheet of comparisons. I think I have some close ones, and I think Tas is right, and P.R. American Blue hits the spot.

I think my Chesterfield mix of Sapphire and Zircon is pretty close too. I'll call it FPPSm7.

Thank you!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Hilarious! Reading your sheet was like deja vu.

The struggle, the pain and then, then the inevitable acceptance that PRAB will do and not to lose any more sleep over it :D

Yep, it is rather funny, isn't it.

It's a good thing I have that big bottle of PRAB in one of my ink drawers. And, the Chesterfield mix I made last is also not a bad approximation... So I made about 30ml of that to use up...

The upshot of course is I have about 10 new blues, made by mixing, to play with. (Not all of them were good FPPS approximations, but almost all are nice enough to make at least 20ml and use...) So the struggle, while indeed a struggle, did yield some positives, too. Did you get any keepers out of yours? (I don't quite remember...)

Ooo, yes.

The Amber Mix - Noodler's La Couleur Royale & Navajo Turquoise (2:1) is gorgeous to use and my Blue Velvet, Majestic & water mix isn't too shabby either.

I have about 35ml of the former and about 20ml of the latter. Coupled with a brand new bottle of PRAB, that'll do for the time being. More importantly, it's got me using blue inks and I'm rather liking it.

I'm secretly hoping KWZI is following this madness and will soon shame us all by producing his spot on version of it. Isn't that right KWZI . . . ???

We can always hope! and until he does, I'll hold off my purchase of his Azure #5... since buying his inks only makes sense for me if I buy two or more...

Has anyone done a comparison with PRAB Fast Dry? My recollection is that it is a tad darker than standard PRAB.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, time to wake up this thread. It has been watching my cats on the bed snoozing away and has decided to follow suit.

I redid the samples I did very early on in this thread. I chose a relatively broad Jinhao nib (from my Jinhao Silver 1200, Yay for Bling!) and adjusted it so that the original PPS looked good. Using the same nib, I then tested the following inks on a Rhodia A5 pad -

Faux Penman Sapphire #5

PR American Blue

PR DC Supershow Blue

PR Lake Placid Blue

Visconti Blue

Iroshizuku Asa-Gao

Noodler's Blue

Noodler's Ottoman Azure

Everflow True Blue.

Apart from the FPS#9, it seems that in this batch of scans that Boring Old Noodler's Blue might be the next best match, especially if it is diluted somewhat (20~40% water).

From what I see on my screen I wholeheartedly agree. :) Brilliant work.

However, my PRAB does look a lot lighter than your one and I'm glad as I've fallen for it.

In my case I've tried DCSS Blue as well and it's too dark; Lake Placid Blue is too light, and I really think the PRAB is a very good match. On my sheet I actually thought it beat out faux Penman #9.

Inks do so well at presenting differently in different pens

That's why I have settled on using one pen, the dismounted Jinhao nib in a pen holder. It shows the inks truly relative to each other.

The PR American Blue in my scan looks quite dark, but in my Parker 51, it's much lighter, even lighter than the PPS.
