Dallas Pen Show 2015

I had another great day at the show. Bought a few more items, got a little more education, and took a few pictures, which I'll post in a couple of days.

I also left a few FPs that I want, as motivation to return next year.

I had a good time yesterday, Friday, mostly learning a lot. Picked up a few inks from Vaness, and Danny Fudge did a great and generous job repairing a bent tine on my MB 146. Thanks Danny. And thanks to Vaness for her patience with my ink decision process.

Sorry that I missed other FPNers. Next year.

I was the fat girl in the embroidered sushi shirt asking everyone if they had any Vanishing Points. :lticaptd: I got a red one from Pete Kirby, a few years old but never used; I also came home with a desk pen that came with a 1960s NOS Pilot knock-off pen, and a very interesting button filler Parker UK Duofold with a 14k oblique nib. I also pulled the trigger on a bottle of Yama-Dori from Anderson Pens, I'm not sure why this ink interests me so much, since it doesn't look that different from the Iroshizuku Ku-jaku (or Emerald of Chivor without the gold, for that matter), but I've been waffling on buying some for weeks now.

Had a blast and I hope to make it next year!

Ok, I survived my first ever Pen Show :)

I am sure being a newbie, I haven't fully explored what the show had to offer, but that's what next year is for, right?

Goal #1 - Checked! I was able to find a cool pen for my dad's birthday present, thanks to Lisa Vanness.

21718788942_85e8883929_c.jpg

Finish: Tortoise shell (deep red and black mottled pattery, very pretty)

Heft: Nice heft, it feels solid and substantial

Cap Click: Nice feel to the click, almost magnet-like

Special Feature: The Broad Nib features a stub-italic grind by Shawn Newton

My Dad's Reaction: LOVE IT!!!

Mission accomplished!

You have to ask for the free Noodler's ink at the Dromgoole's ink display. Don't know if there is any left. They do this every year. Unfortunately, the color for this year's Dallas show (Banker's Tan) was not nearly as attractive as the three colors Nathan made for the Boston show.

I was pleasantly surprised to get the free ink. My friend was not enthused about the color, but my wife sees some potential there. I quite agree about the Boston colors. Two of them made it to Dallas and I bought one, but the very nice green Plymouth Wilderness ink was what I was really interested in - and it did not make it.

Current Daily Carry: Pilot Custom 743 with 14k Posting nib (Sailor Kiwa-Guro), Sailor 1911L Realo Champagne with 21k Extra Fine nib (Sailor Tokiwa-Matsu). Platinum Century 3776 Bourgogne (Diamine Syrah), Nakaya Portable Writer Midori with 14k Extra Extra Fine nib (Lamy Peridot), Pilot Vanishing Point Stealth Black with Extra Fine nib unit (Pilot Blue Black), a dozen Nockco DotDash index cards of various sizes and a Traveler's Notebook.

This was an excellent show! I found a few pens I have been looking for at price points I considered reasonable: a modern Parker Duofold Centennial, a Pelikan M800 red stripe and a Pilot 823 Custom. And I picked up a cool Akkerman ink bottle. I met some new friends and reconnected with some current friends. I had a wonderful time.

The more I know about computers, the more I like my pens.

I came to the show with the intent to talk to people, buy some ink, and check out pens.

Success on all fronts. Talked to many vendors, met some new people, bought three bottles of ink (was mostly after some Akkerman), and walked out with five pens. Two were handouts by Luxury Brands (the rollerball pens), a super cheap Plumix (going to do a nib swap with a Metropolitan), and two Diplomat pens. I would have walked out with more ink, but I waited too long before making some purchases. Going in with a few more sure-fire-buys is a good idea; by the time I decided to buy a few inks I saw earlier in the day, they were all gone. That's ok - just means I get to attempt to use up what I already have!

Last thought - there were great discounts and deals all over the place; buying a pen at a show sure seems like the best way to do it now.

Pakman, if you still have that Sheaffer w/ the extra nibs after the show, I may have to talk to you about shipping it to me.

Sold it, sorry!

What an awesome show, I got to talk with, eat with, sell pens to, buy pens from and generally rub elbows with many, many FPN'ers at the show this weekend! The Dallas Show is one of the highlights of my year! Thanks to all of you for helping me have such a good time!

Here are some pictures of our table at the show then on to the wonderful stash of goodies I took home with me:

I was highly tempted by F-C's 18k medium italic nib, but I was already over my spending limit and managed to resist. I'll probably end up getting a smoke and cinnamaroon 19 with that nib eventually.

Sorry man, I just gotta do it!

Now there is proof that we are actually there! I've been playing with the new TWSBI Diamond 580. It's not real happy with the Kink Philip Requiem so I'll have to try another ink. Have cleaned the 2 Shaeffer school pens, but not inked them yet. The kids already have their Preppy pens. I don't have to worry if they lose those!

Reinked the Phileas and the Artista Crystal. Will probably start carrying the Lamy Al-Star with my on may daily work.

I was very impressed with the Franklin-Christoph nibs and was tempted. I did not see a pen body that grabbed me, though. Instead, I opted for a custom grind from Linda Kennedy on a Vanishing Point nib unit and, thus far, I am extremely happy with it. While she was working on it, I was able to try out all of her Daily Italic, Cursive Italic and Stubs - all of them were also very tempting.

I suspect that I will be giving some serious business to both Franklin-Christoph and Indy Pen Dance in the future.

Right, Linda's nib grinds in those demo pens were fantastic. Which grind did you get on your Vanishing Point?

They say; "Everything is bigger in Texas." While I cannot say that with complete certainty. I can attest to the fact that a big welcome, big encouragement and big hospitality and big fun awaited me at the Dallas Pen Show. It's always great to see old friends (and you know who you are) and to meet new friends. Thanks to the Pen Club for giving us another classy and great show.

Regards,

It was my first pen show, and I had a great time! I met up with four of my regular correspondents. One paid my way into the show since it was my first one. I got some nice things, but the best part was hanging out and making envelopes and testing pens and inks and talking and having dinner (there's a great Thai place on Midview? Midway? Road--Thai Star). So glad I went!
