Guess which book we read last night, Ptero? ;) We are actually on the second book where Pippi went to the school picnic, so we're a bit behind your son and you, but as I was curious to re-read the bit about the Spink/Spunk we read that bit. You are right that the word had to be something that didn't exist, so Spunk would not have worked in English, because it is a word either with original or secondary meaning. So the reason the Swedish non-word Spunk got changed to Spink in the English version must be not because of the "other" vulgar meaning in English, but because it has meaning in English at all. Now I understand it. :)

At the end of the short chapter I showed my boys your drawing on the iPad, and my older son said "That's cool" (that's his preferred word of the month) and the younger one said "There is a green monster hiding under that spink, and when you squish it, the monster is going to come out and get you." What comments did your son give you after seeing your green bug?

And then this morning after breakfast we found a few green/brown duo-chrome beetles expired on the veranda (we call them Christmas Beetles here as they always come out in summer around Christmas) and my younger one was getting excited to have found spinks. :D Thank you for stirring the imagination of the 4-year-old.

This pen is part of my little office-kit. A Kaweco Sport leather 3-pen case containing

- A Kaweco Skyline Sport (F-nib) with blue / blue-black ink (currently R&K Salix) for general writing

- A Kaweco Classic Sport (2.3 stub) with Pelikan M205 Duo yellow highlighter ink for... guess what... highlighting

- A Kaweco Skyline Sport (3.2mm) clutch pencil for drawing & not so permanent stuff

This covers about 90% of my office needs, all other pens I bring into the office are just a bonus.

Not the best place to post this (so please write your responses with your pen of the day and post a picture to stay with the main subject of this thread :) ) :

The problem with this little kit, is ink compatibility of the main writer and the highlighter pen. Due to restrictions from work, I need to use a blue, blue-black or black ink. Black either gets really boring really quick or is not "black enough" to qualify as black. So I use blue or blue-black. But it needs to be compatible with the highlighter ink. Currently I use R&K Salix, which meets the color restrictions and works well enough with the highlighter, but it is a little too dry for this (already modded) pen. So I'm looking for a new ink.

Does anyone have a suggestion? It should be blue or blue-black (not hinting towards turquoise or purple), fairly easy flowing, cheap (as it is just for office use), permanent(-ish), some shading or sheen to make it look interesting would be nice, preferably available in both cartridge and bottle, I'd like to keep it under €15 per 50ml and last but not least, for sale in the Netherlands (so no Noodlers :( ).

Some inks I already tried:

- Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue (gets erased by highlighter)

- Visconti Blue (gets erased by highlighter)

- Poky Blue (gets erased by highlighter)

- Iroshizuku Asa-gao (gets smeared by highlighter)

- Diamine Sargasso Sea (gets smeared by highlighter)

- Montblanc Twilight Blue (gets smeared by highlighter)

- Rohrer & Klingner Blau Permanent (gets smeared by highlighter)

- Diamine Royal Blue (gets smeared by highlighter)

- Noodlers Baystate Blue (works with highlighter, but not available in the Netherlands, so too impractical/expensive for daily use)

- Rohrer & Klingner Salix (works with highlighter, but too dry)

- Hero 232 Blue-black (works with highlighter, but only after long dry time)

Thanks!

My dirty mind  went to the "other" meaning when I thought about why the word spunk wasn't used in a children's book. :D

Not dirty. I'd say astute and prudent with the perfect perspective for well-reasoned discretion. That's totally appropriate for children's books.

And now, I just got to see a most interesting global discussion about translating a beloved children's story.

My boys would say "epic."

And double cool that a flying beagle and a rubber ducky are not only talented, but pretty brainy, too.

How about one of Noodler's bulletproof inks? I haven't used them myself, but they're supposed to bond with the cellulose in paper, so I imagine a highlighter wouldn't move them anywhere. You could use Noodler's 54th Mass for a blue-black, or just Noodle's black for black.

Coop, if you like the Pen-Ink Combo (which seems to be the case) you can also make the pen wetter (to create your personal dream team).

Coop: You may want to consider ESS Registrar's Ink, it's 10 pounds, 50 pence (sorry, no symbols) per 110 ml bottle, delivered to Europe.

Here's their page: http://www.registrarsink.co.uk/registrars_ink.html

I've no idea what postage would cost, but I believe Goulet ships to Europe, if you want Noodler's ink; this is their site:

Best of luck,

I'm quite fond of it, it is as smooth as butter on glass, the only negative about that particular pen is the broad nib, which forces me to write slowly so I don't block my characters. My favourite uncle would have loved it, he preferred a broad, and wrote a mixture of cursive and printing. Were my hand better, I'd use it more often.

Did someone say pink? Hold your fire! Don't judge :

Here are today's German pinks ( also the name of an excellent tomato ). I picked up this pen in the Netherlands at an exceptional price. I have every Pelikan Special Edition produced in the last dozen years or so and only wish I'd gotten the entire City Series. The Pelikan nibs are second to none. This MB pink ink is terrific for highlighting and margin notes.

Finally, as several reviewers have noted, this pen really is more of a purple-raspberry color. This is a cheerful fountain pen swan song before I head -- full steam ahead-- In to all my autumn toned pens and inks.

I have already modified the nib/feed to write wetter, I'm afraid that if I take it any further, I will get in trouble when switching to one of my wetter inks.

I'll look into the registrars ink, Noodlers is just not an option. Goulet charges $16 for their cheapest shipping option so that would be $28.50 (not counting the possible customs fees and taxes). There's a UK based Noodlers reseller, but with shipping, it'd still be over $26 for a single bottle. That's just too much for an ink that's mostly going to be wasted on notes...

Coop, if you are interested in Registrars ink there are two very similar iron gall inks that are less expensive to obtain.

1) Hero 232 Blue Black ink is a very nice IG, about $6 including shipping from a popular auction site.

2) Chesterfield Archival Vault, from fountain pens, free shipping with a $15 order IF I remember correctly. Chesterfield inks are relabeled Diamine and I use them a lot.

Loaded some Diamine Sapphire in the Parker Sonnet, and was pleased with the color and the flow. A good break from the routine today.

Fantastic! You won't see any judgment from me. I have a bottle of that ink, and I reeeaaallllyyyy like it. I often use it as a daily writer.

p.s., I surely do wish I could pick up one of those pink M600s. I think they're beautiful, but I'm just a little bit too frugal to drop the coin on one.
