Fountain Pen Database Available for Download

If I had to add one field, I'd add one for serial number. I have a lot of pens that have them, and I'd like to make it easy to track (rather than putting it in the notes field).

Deirdre,

The next update will include user-defined fields. You will be able to name the field (i.e., Serial Number) and enter a value. This will also link to URLs and documents on your computer. I just need to find the time to prepare this update for release.

Since this is a Filemaker runtime, it's not like it's anything in the FPN database that did it; it's the runtime.

Hi Deirdre

is there anything that I can do to tweak either the runtime or anything else to get it up and running... from a system's point of view...

cheers Trevor

I'd file a bug report with Filemaker -- I don't know what's happening, but they may have seen it before.

This is very generous and extremely kind of you to share such big efforts for free.. I am sure such that you have invested plenty of efforts and time to make such brilliant application. I was keeping my collection in an excel sheet and now I shall with no doubts use you application. Well done and Many many thanks for this dazzling application.. I really love it

My fountain pen inventory database is ready to download. There is a version for both Mac and PC users. The database maintains a lot of useful information about your fountain pen collection, including basic descriptive info, prices paid, repairs made and unlimited photographs. It also makes it very easy to post reviews to FPN. This database isn't associated with FPN, but I did add a couple of features that plays nicely with FPN.

As I mentioned, there's a Mac and a PC version. I ran into some font issues on the PC and had to make a a couple of small changes to the PC version in order to get it posted without delay. There isn't a large difference, but the Mac version looks a little nicer.

When you download it and unzip it, you will see a file and a folder named Fountain Pen Inventory. The file is an alias to the main program file in the folder. I don't usually distribute my solutions as standalone runtime databases. I've tested it as carefully as I could, but let me know if you have any issues. Even better, let me know if you like it, too. There is no charge for Fountain Pen Inventory. It's my gift to the FPN fountain pen community. You can redistribute it to someone else, but are not allowed to charge for it, modify it or present it as your own work.

Enough of the intro, you can download it at: http://www.jonro.com/downloads/

Regards,

Jon

Hi Jon

I have downloaded your super data base and have the following comments for you .. should you have the time, please reply me;

1- What are the maximum capacity I can store on this data base .. does it limited to a certain number or its size (MEGA B) can be extended.

Upon using the list view I have the following comments

1- The total value ( last line down) is always shown in $ US even if you choose other currency in the application.. can I change it...

3- Also with the list view .. what do you mean by " Nib Stroke".. do you mean Nib Size

4- Still with the list view .. is there any chances to control the column width.. the first column for Manufacture is very small and could be extended a bit..

5- Can't you feature instead of "Date sold" .. " Price sold" thus you see if you made some profit or loss.. I guess it is normal that after keeping my pen and use for sometime, I need to know how much did I lost when sold..don't you agree..

Comments when displayed as Table View

1- Here you don't see purchased price and subsequently you don't see Total Vlaue at the end of the view ??

2- Very nice you can control the Cell width here .. super

Comments when displayed as record View

Simply super..

That's all

Many thanks in advance for your reply..

Cheers

Thanks, this is great, just a few things, could you add the ability to change the currency symbol in the postage cost and total to something other than dollars, i.e. £, € etc.

Also when I try to use the review function and click on the Create FPN Review button nothing happens.

But once again, thanks for sharing :clap1:

Bob,

As far as I know, it works under all versions of Windows.

A new version, which will be released fairly soon, will display the official currency abbreviations (i.e., USD, EUR, etc.) for foreign currencies. Finding the graphic symbol for all of the world's currencies is just a little too much work, but if someone can point me to a downloadable list with abbreviations and symbols, I might add them.

Umm, here's a list of currency symbols, the country that uses them and the ISO currency code.

Oh and does anyone else have the same problem I have where the Create FPN Review button seems to do nothing?

Yep. Seems it's a work in progress, which is fine with me.

The button saves the review to the clipboard.

The problem with that list is that it uses a special font that would have to be installed on each computer running the program. I could save each symbol as a .gif, but don't have time for that now. Besides, I don't think it includes every currency symbol, just the "more important" one. Currency symbols will probably have to wait.

It also gives the unicode codes which should work with any unicode font
