Fountain Pen Database Available for Download

Recommended Posts

I get the error message that "This file cannot be opened because it does not belong to this solution" when I try to run the file - 'Fountain Pen Inventory Clone.FPN'. I extracted the download from the WinZip Archive to a Folder under C:Program Files/Jonro's FP DB 1.5. I had kept the previous program in the folder /Jonro's FP DB.

It's interesting that when I click on the error message - I automatically get transferred to the old program I had stored in another folder.

Has anyone experienced this type of problem - and more importantly, found a solution?

Regards,

Gerry

Is it possible to make SQL-dump of that database? If so, then anybody could input that SQL-code to any SQL-capable database program he wants, including PostgreSQL and other open-source database programs.

Very nice. Thank you.

Please consider adding a demo database.

My fountain pen inventory database is ready to download. There is a version for both Mac and PC users. The database maintains a lot of useful information about your fountain pen collection, including basic descriptive info, prices paid, repairs made and unlimited photographs. It also makes it very easy to post reviews to FPN. This database isn't associated with FPN, but I did add a couple of features that plays nicely with FPN.

As I mentioned, there's a Mac and a PC version. I ran into some font issues on the PC and had to make a a couple of small changes to the PC version in order to get it posted without delay. There isn't a large difference, but the Mac version looks a little nicer.

When you download it and unzip it, you will see a file and a folder named Fountain Pen Inventory. The file is an alias to the main program file in the folder. I don't usually distribute my solutions as standalone runtime databases. I've tested it as carefully as I could, but let me know if you have any issues. Even better, let me know if you like it, too. There is no charge for Fountain Pen Inventory. It's my gift to the FPN fountain pen community. You can redistribute it to someone else, but are not allowed to charge for it, modify it or present it as your own work.

Enough of the intro, you can download it at: http://www.jonro.com/downloads/

Jon

Database is very nice. I just started using it tonight. I'll figure out how to refine my entries eventually. My only lament is that it is telling me how much I've spent total on my pens. Oh my. Still good to have that there, though, so I can remind myself to SLOW DOWN.

Same here.

This is great! Am I allowed to enter data in advance of winning the pen on eBay? Or is that bad karma?

Not sure where to post this, but....I have two circa 1978-1980 SlimLine MontBlanc fountain pens, NIB, never filled or used. I am trying to find their value and any other information on them. Can anyone help?

Thank you for this great program. It was very generous of you to share it with the FPN community.

I have two suggestions for any future version:

1) allow the user to select that the pens in inventory count (at the lower left corner) be decremented by 1 if the "Date Sold" field is not blank.

2) add a module that would allow tracking nibs (especially those that are not in a pen). For example, I have loose Esterbrook nibs and a few Pelikan M800 nibs. An additional feature of this module could be to cross reference the nibs that are also entered in the main database as part of the description of the pens. Thus, you would have a complete list of all nibs-- those in your pens and those that are spares.

Thanks again for sharing your work.

Thanks - I'll give it a try, but I think I will get too lazy to get everything on and update........

The current version already does #1. If there is a Date Sold, that pen is not included in the inventory count. The next version will have a section with user-definable fields which could be used for extra nibs. I don't have any plans to create a separate module for nibs at this point. Thanks for your comments.

Sorry, but a Linux version would not be possible. I hope you can use the database under Mac OS X or Windows.

Jon

This sounds like a great program. Any chance of a Linux version?

Downloaded the database and loaded it with my collection. This is great! Thank you very much for making this available. One suggestion for the future - just as you can see your total purchas price in list view, it would be nice to see the total sale price.

Thanks for the kind words. That feature will be in the next version.

Jonro,

What a great contribution. I'm going to try to import my Excel file tomorrow and I'm looking forward to using your baby. One of my companies has a software development group and I'm going to rub their nose in it. :)

Hi Jon

First: I love Your database - and use it! I myself am a Progress-database guy and always wanted do build something like this and was too lazy, and now there's no need for me anymore to do it myself! :ltcapd:

I love You for this !!

As a European I'm just having 2 little problems with Currency:

  • Too many in the list. EUR is EUR, no matter which country (Same with GBB and USD - used in several countries)
  • Shipping Cost (Record View) and Total (right bottom Corner in List View) put "$" as prefix, instead of "€" allthoug I put in EUR as home currency. Perhaps also divide into Purchase and home Currency, as shipment costs rise so dramatically, that shipment becomes a bigger and bigger part of the total value of the pen.
and a wish:
  • Show separate totals for "Pen-Value", "Shipping" and "Total" in bottom right corner of List View - in Home Currency.
+ I'd like little more fields for Purchased from & Sold to - like  Name, address, email etc.

Finaly I somehow feel sorry, but there's nothing more for me to want. Your Pen Application is just great!!

Warm regards from Vienna

Martin

awesome program! too bad it doesn't work on win vista, because my main working computer came preloaded with vista :crybaby: i wouldn't have upgraded that soon if it were up to me, but unfortunately it wasn't... specifically, i couldn't get it to load--i can find the process in task manager, but that's about it.

anyway, i tried it out on my server machine (which runs linux most of the time, but i booted into XP just for this program), and liked it a lot. thanks for sharing!
