I have been using version 1.5 for about a year. I am unable to close windows in this software once opened, and I must restart the software to do so. Is there a newer version that resolves this issue, or is there a fix for this?

I am on a PC with Windows XP Professional.

If you are talking about the enlarged pictures, just click on the images to close them and return to normal view. Same thing with the "About" box.

This is fabulous! I don't know what took me to long to download this. I have almost all of my info entered.

A few questions/comments/requests:

1. Answered my own question here.

2. Also, can we have an ink review function that works like the FPN pen review function?

3. Finally, is there a way to create a plug-in that would allow me to keep a log, for each pen, of which ink I have used it them and on what date I filled/flushed them? Maybe this could appear as another tab that shows on the pen record view. I'm thinking three columns Date filled, Ink, and Date Flushed.

Thanks!

A couple of issues I am seeing:

  1. As a previous poster mentioned, once I open a window it cannot be closed. I end up minimizing any window I'm not using. E.g., I open the User Manual (Or User something - sounds like it'll be a manual) but it is a blank window. "X" won't close it, but I can minimize it to get it out of the way. Doesn't really stop work, but several different windows are open at once sometimes. Using Windows XP Pro, BTW.

  2. I can't seem to configure printing. Print Setup just allows access to the printer settings. When I print the standard table in the inventory it is too wide to fit even in landscape view. I can change fonts and column widths but it is a lot of trial and error just to get a view of most columns on a printed page. I haven't been able to print a full page yet. Last columns are always cut off.

I don't know if there are any remedies for these issues in Windows.

Thanks for the program.

Jim

Just click on the small "house" icon in the bottom.

Actually, I have the same issue in Mac OS X 10.5.7. No red "close" button at the upper left of windows.

Having exactly the same problem here. Did you find any fix yet?

The database runtime is 8.5v1. I don't know if this will help, but a similar problem in 9 is supposed to be fixed in 10 (http://forum-en.filemaker.com/fm/board/message?board.id=aut&message.id=1403).

My fountain pen inventory database is ready to download. There is a version for both Mac and PC users. The database maintains a lot of useful information about your fountain pen collection, including basic descriptive info, prices paid, repairs made and unlimited photographs. It also makes it very easy to post reviews to FPN. This database isn't associated with FPN, but I did add a couple of features that plays nicely with FPN.

As I mentioned, there's a Mac and a PC version. I ran into some font issues on the PC and had to make a a couple of small changes to the PC version in order to get it posted without delay. There isn't a large difference, but the Mac version looks a little nicer.

When you download it and unzip it, you will see a file and a folder named Fountain Pen Inventory. The file is an alias to the main program file in the folder. I don't usually distribute my solutions as standalone runtime databases. I've tested it as carefully as I could, but let me know if you have any issues. Even better, let me know if you like it, too. There is no charge for Fountain Pen Inventory. It's my gift to the FPN fountain pen community. You can redistribute it to someone else, but are not allowed to charge for it, modify it or present it as your own work.

Enough of the intro, you can download it at: http://www.jonro.com/downloads/

Jon

Hi Jon

I only joined FPN last night, and while looking around; found this post.

I downloaded the zip file, extracted but my PC will not open it, and the program has to shut down each and every time I have tried to open it, and activate the application file.

any ideas?

Respectfully

Garth

Jonro,

"We would like to thank Jonro for making his work freely available, another example of the attitude here that makes us all feel part of one big family."

I am impressed and must admit my admiration for you! What an enormous amount time and effort you have given to all. To top it off, you have gone out of your way to make modifications for everyone who asked!

While I won't use the database (it is fantastic, but being too organized frightens me), I want to thank you for what you have done. I believe you should be nominated for sainthood!

I'm very new to this network, but I have already learned it is a very giving group of people and you are in the lead in that department. I am amazed.

Take care. -gross.

Garth,

I have Windows Vista and the program will not start unless I use the Run as Administrator feature. Otherwise, it works great - certainly worth the price ;) A little aggravation to get it started is well worth the end result.

Thanks,

Chris

fmrleo and noctrl02:

If you look back one page I had similar problems. After downloading the program it simply would not run. No error messages, no entries in the Event log, nothing. Double-clicking the exe file got an hour glass to appear briefly and then nothing at all. No new process was running in the Task Manager, no activity. And I do have admin rights on my machine running Windows XP Pro.

For whatever reason I decided to try it again a week later and this time it opened and ran. Nothing major changed here: Same system, no new software installed, same Anti-Virus. I have no idea why it would not work previously. I had tried rebooting at the time and it did not help. It is possible that a Microsoft Update was installed in between attempts; I don't remember. But it's worth trying again.

I installed the program and played with it last night, and apart from three things, it works beautifully for me under Vista Home Premium.

1. "Display User Guide" opens a window which contains nothing but a header, a one-line description, and the "Home" icon. I also discovered that clicking the "Home" icon does nothing if the view has been changed via the selector at the lower left of the window.

2. "Date Purchased" doesn't allow partial dates; I have some pens that I acquired long ago, and can only estimate the years in which I did so, but can't enter just a year or a year/month combination.

3. "Purchase Price" always converts everything to the right of the decimal point to zeros (5.01 through 5.99 are all displayed as 5.00).

Still, it's considerably better than just keeping track of things in a text file, and much more friendly than Microsoft Access, and I sincerely thank Jon for his work in creating the thing, and his generoisty in letting os have it. :-)

Hmm, finally got around to downloading v1.5 and trying this fine FM DB out. Not seeing that problem under 10.5.8 even with the 8.5 runtime. I have FM v9, so if I see I can always open the DB in FM rather than using the runtime.

Too bad it is locked, because I'd like to fix the shipping cost field, which defaulting to dollars, rather than having a separate currency field.
