Some older Sailors.

interesting I'm not sure who came first but the nib looks similar to one of the Pilot Super models I think it's the Super 500

Yes. Sailor did make 24K nibs.

I have always been fascinated on this elusive nib... how does the nib feel when writing hear say it's stiff as a nail just because a 24kt gold nib was technically impossible even during the karat wars

Some stuff you don't see everyday.

I know it's art but... thats like NSFW territory put mosaic on it at least :X or if it can't be done... I guess no one here is a minor? Edited by Algester

Some Pilot Super...

Two types of nibs.

The thumbnail nib was introduced in 1957.

The pen with clear section is rare.

It's been a while since I posted here. I have picked up several Japanese pens, but these two Danitrio's most recently. They are a Mikado in Sakurakawa-nuri finish and a Genkai Byakudan-Nuri Shishi (imaginary ions)

Both are lovely large pens that will enter rotation in a little while.

Not an insane brag, but got my first serious pen today! Platinum #3776 Century in Bourgogne Red, 14K M nib. Loaded it with Iroshizuku Asa-Gao, really excited to have a really nice setup now! Will post pics once I'm not too lazy to get out my camera.

I buy Pilot Vanishing Points from time to time and I recently acquired a very interesting specimen. It's covered with black urushi lacquer and was one of ten pieces made for the Itoya maki-e pen fair back in 2010 by Pilot. It is a far more lustrous black than the standard Vanishing Point color and has an interesting blue-brown tint when examined under strong light. Now I need to find the other colors...

Congratulations on a great pen. I hope you enjoy it for a long while. Be careful not to fall too deep into the madness! :)

  • 2 months later...

I hope no one is offended that I am posting in an older thread. But in the last two months I have poured over every page of this thread and wanted to contribute two pens two it.

I first purchased the Falcon (sf) two months ago and this week purchased the Platinum 3776 (sf) in Chartres Blue. I absolutely love both of these pens. I love the semi-flex or springiness of both nibs. To be honest the 3776 feels perfect for me, the weight, the looks, the nib I adore.

But I think a Pilot Custom 74 in maybe a medium? nib might be on the radar. If anyone has a suggestions for a next pen, I am open to suggestions. Thanks and cheers!

Hi SR

How do you compare the nib on the Falcon to the SF on the Platinum?

I'm possibly interested in the soft fine on the Platinum 3776 to replace the EF that I already have.

A Sailor 1911 or Pro Gear will go nicely with your falcon and Platinum. The nibs have a slightly unique feel to them and feels like a smoother falcon. Although it's referred to as a hard nib it yields a little and gives your writing a little flair with line variation and hair lines. I find that in normal writing the Sailor gives more natural line variation than the Falcon. The Falcon SEF is very stiff and really doesn't give much in the way of line variation and produces a thicker line than a Sailor MF, oddly.

I have a Custom 74 but I don't think it will give you anything that your Falcon already does.

Thanks I think I will research a Sailor next I've been reading up on Pilots and Platinum so should be fun reading.

I've only had the 3776 a couple of days now. I find the Falcon to be "squishier" and softer and I don't have to put as much pressure as I do in the 3776. The 3776 "flex" doesn't feel as natural as the Falcon. If it makes any sense I feel I can't (and won't) push the 3776 as much as the falcon. I think it's better as a daily writer because the nib is a little stiffer.

With Iroshizuku inks both pens feel naturally fitted for the inks. When I had j herbin in my 3776 it felt too wet. Whereas the falcon felt like it could handle the wetter ink. Sorry I'm new to describing pens but hope that helps.

All in all I'm considering getting the black platinum in soft fine to have another I think I get more bang for my money with it.

Thanks! You've helped a lot actually.

Platinum nibs are meant to be the hardest nibs around and that's why I chose the Pilot Custom 74 over the Platinum 3776 even though I really much preferred the design and beautiful colour of the Chartres Blue over the design of the Pilot, but I thought I'd reconsider the soft fine on the Platinum in case I overlooked something.

Sounds like I made the right decision.

Yeah I know what you mean about the 3776 - the way you describe the Platinum is how I would describe the Falcon - I daren't push it too hard just in case. Maybe I should have considered the SF Falcon instead of the SEF.

With my pens, it's the Pilot 74 that has hogged all the squishiness and given none to the Falcon, but if you're happy with the softness of the Falcon I really wouldn't bother with the Custom 74.

Checkout the Sailors!

If you are considering a Sailor pen, I can vouch for the Sailor Pro Gear Realo Classic Fountain Pens 20th Anniversary Red & Black limited edition (88 pens).

"Pro Gear" is short for "Professional Gear." Pragmatically, it means the pen's tips are flat, instead of rounded like in Sailor's 1911 series pens.

I think "Realo" is a portmanteau of "reliance" and "locus." Sailor wanted a name that represented the company's core concepts or values. I can never remember that, and have to look it up every time. Practically, "Realo" means the pen is a piston filler.

So, to round out your collection from the big three Japanese pen companies, the Sailor Pro Gear Realo is a pretty neat pen. A piston filler black and red pen with flat tips.

Mine is always inked up with Sheaffer Skrip Blue, and I always carry it with a Pilot Custom 912 (currently inked up with Iroshizuku Fugu-Shogun), and a Platinum 3776 Century Nice Pur (currently inked up with Binder Burgundy).

Very bespoke – especially if you get a custom grind from John Mottishaw.

Something to consider, if your looking to round out your clutch of Japanese pens.

Some pictures of my Japanese pens are below.

First: Hakase. The stand has (from left to right) a pen in waterbuffel horn, two in cocobolo wood and the one in front is in sandalwood. That last one has been inked ever since I got it in the summer of 2012.

Then my latest Hakase is a deskpen in African ebony wood. All Hakase pens have solid gold trim etc, and a #15 nib.

Then I have many Nakaya's. One of my favourites is a maki-e one with its special case.

Fabulous pens

I wasn't a fan of wooden pens unti I saw the Hakase ebony barrels and caps.

Did Hakase make the stand?

You need to show us pictures of the rest of your collection.... :)
