Sumi Inks, Does Non-Toxic Mean Edible?

I'm a fisherman and would like to turn this...

Without ruining the flesh, I won't throw the flesh away. I hear that sumi inks are non-toxic, can anyone shed light on this? I can't seem to get a definitive answer except that they are non-toxic. I'm not talking about the Iroshizuku stuff at $28 for a small bottle, rather the Yasutomo stuff made from"vegetable oil soot" or even buying the sticks and grinding it myself.

Typically non-toxic means that the item won't kill you, though it may still have the potential to make you sick. Non-toxic inks are different from edible inks.

 

If possible, you can try to do the print then remove the skin and trim down the flesh that is stained by the ink below the skin. There are no guarantees that it will remove all the ink, but it should take care of most of it. Otherwise, you may want to consider using food dyes or making an edible ink using beets or other veggies. There are lots of recipes online that can whipped up quickly.

Immean sure sumi ink is 98% carbon but unless the human body can process the amount of carbon found in 350ml of sumi ink... Without getting harmed...

Don't see why not. Sumi ink is soot (in this case, from vegetable oil), a liquid to dissolve it in (not sure what in this case but usually grain alchohol, maybe from soy here), and a fish glue (issenglass). Nothing that is not edible, although the final product tastes "wrong". Yes, I got some on my finger and, thus, on my tongue. But maybe the referenced meat-marking ink would be a faster, better deal.

Thanks for the nice words about the fish, that was the smallest of the day, we release the larger breeders.

 

I'm going to do more research on this and will get back to you all just for closure.

According to this video ~ sumi ink was used so that the fish could be washed and released or then sold at market. I suspect then that you can do this and eat the fish....In one method the ink doesn't come directly in contact with the fish.

You could use squid ink, and then 'fix' the print using something like shellac.

My Yasutomo sumi inks have a warning label on the box:

 

"May be harmful if swallowed contains BORNEOL. Avoid ingestion keep out of reach of children. For further info contact 1-800-262-6454. "

 

I have no idea why they use borneol, but it sure smells good - like incense. It supposedly oxidizes to become camphor.

when people see one of my syringes on the desk, after I finish filling an eyedropper, sometimes they go into a trance and say out loud if it could be possible to inject bottles of ink into their skin and not get sick

 

i usually smile and say they aren't doing that with my ink, it's too expensive.

OK, got in touch with Yasutomo in CA, they are familiar with the process and told me I want to use their KY series of sumi ink, which is nothing but carbon ash from vegetable matter and water. Just wipe it off the fish scales when done and have dinner. The ink that paddler mentioned is their laquer-added ink.

 

Time to go fishing!
