Founded in Heidelberg in 1883, as Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik, the company started by producing a modest range of wooden dip pens. The Kaweco brand name, originally developed as a model name and coined after Koch, Weber & Company, the owners, was adopted as the company name in the early 1900’s. By the 1930’s over 600 staff were producing a huge array of fountain pens and pencils, including the popular Sport range of pocket pens. The company's survived almost one hundred years but in 1980 its operations were closed.

Happily that wasn't the end of the brand. Horst Gutberlet - owner of H&M Gutberlet GmbH and pen enthusiast and his son Michael were able to but the brand name in 1994. They started working on reviving the brand. It took many years of dedicated work. The brand was initially distributed by Diplomat however over the years their line-up has extended and they were able to create their own international network of distributors.

As with most big dreams the realisation took many years of dedicated work. The Kaweco brand was initially distributed by Diplomat. Over the years, the model line-up has expanded and Kaweco has created their own international network of distributors.

Today Kaweco offers wide variety of fountain pens and accessories. They have eight inks in their line-up. I don't know makes their inks, however I've read somewhere it was Dr. Pflug from Aratrum (creator of Caran d'Ache inks). If anyone has some data on this topic, I'd like to learn it :)

Anyway the inks are sold in generic glass bottles (30 ml) and their price is steep. Given that in my country Kaweco inks are priced higher (price per 1 ml) than Edelstein or Graf von Faber-Castell I keep on aking myself "what were you guys thinking"? I expect premium priced products to offer premium experience - premium inks should be well-behaved and offer some added value as aesthetic bottle. Here KaWeCo doesn't deliver. The bottle is cheap, heneric and boring. Practical, no doubt, but if you want me to pay premium give me premium :)

Palmen Grün is well-behaved green ink. I enjoy it. It's rather close to now discontinued Amazon by Caran d'Ache.

Ooooh, Amazon is my favourite green, and this looks really close! I'll have to get a bottle to try it!

Thanks for posting this. I was never a big fan of Cd'A inks, but this does seem to be close to Amazon Green.

Nice--reminds me of Noodler's Gruene Cactus and Cd'A's Vibrant Green.

great review.... here in india kaweco inks are expensive .... compared to lamy or diamine inks...

In my opinion, none of them would justify the extra cost. Diamine makes lots of good ink. Lamy makes all the old standards and a few exotics. Actually, I'm quite impressed with the reviews of some of the Indian inks. There is not much need for anything else.

Another excellent review Visvamitra. I have a sample of this ink, and was thinking of using it soon. I found out about CdA inks after the Colors of the Earth series was gone. The two I was most interested in included Amazon. Sweet!

Kaweco Palm Green has elbowed it's self into good company.

 

I have a sheet of perfect paper 120 g Gmund 'blank beige' (the type of paper) in beige....as soon as I get E40....36+4 mailing I'll have a box of 100 sheets. Perfect paper no woolly line when looking through a honking big magnifying glass.

 

I got the almost perfect paper 170g Gmund 'blank beige' in creme ...slight woolly line under the big honking 1" thick magnifying glass. At the last second I pushed the button for this, because I like the feel of heavy paper, and this one in particular.

I had tested @8 of my 14(then) green-or greenish inks. Leaving out murky and Alt goldgrun.

 

Of the Green-green shading inks tested, R&K Verdura beat MB Irish Green by a nose, Pelikan brilliant green by a neck.

 

 

What nib makes a great difference too, I had tested those three with semi-flex; MB '50's 234 1/2 KOB, Resewe F (Austrian) , and a Geha 725 F.

 

This 'test' of just writing the name Palm Green....in the testing sheets were dead full, was done with a '50's Pelikan 120 F. I had to look for space and wrote smaller than normal. I need to have the inks side by side to judge.

 

Kaweco Palm Green was a shade darker than the others. Less on the 120g beige paper than the 170g cream paper.

One the 120g paper I put it close, considering it's a tad darker, to the R&K Verdura and MB Irish green.

On the 170g paper not, in the darker tone makes a difference in rating green-green....still a nice shading ink.

One 160g G.Lalo laid paper and M&K 95g typewriting paper...it is not as brilliant as it was on the 120g Gmund.

4001 Brilliant is more brilliant...for those who find it a bit too brilliant, Kaweco Palm Green would be an ink to try.

 

I'm happy I bought this ink.

I should try it with a wider wetter...semi-flex pen. But I'm over my limit....now having 19 pens inked. :headsmack: :wallbash: My 'limit' is 18.....and to think just a month or so ago I was down to 7, looking at getting that down to 5.....so I could use more ink......to use more ink empty pens have to be filled. It's hard to empty pens when there are 19 with various levels of filling. Piston pens need not be filled all the way. Mostly I fill them less than when I empty a cartridge into them.

 

In the last two weeks, I have 8 new inks, 7 were tested a couple with two width and flex of nib.

 

Do I have a go to ink? No. .....There are too many nice inks...and my collection is not huge, only some 60 or so inks.I do have many favorite inks....I am reminded of them when I come to Reviews or Inky Thoughts.

 

 

hummm now that I think about it, there is a DA 'spring' moss that needs to be tested with a wider wetter nib...... :glare: Said that a couple of years ago. :headsmack:

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.
