Custom Fountain Pen: Asa Atsushi

It is always a dream of every FPNer to custom make his/her own fountain pen. And not everyone can buy a Nakaya pen. One of my favorite nibs were Pilot nibs and I liked Pilot pens like the Pilot 78g, Prera, Mr etc. But affordable(for an Indian) pilot pens had great nibs in a cheap plastic. So to remedy that, I conceived of an idea to make an ebonite version with pilot nibs. Generally, japanese ebonite pens are very expensive and are limited editions and so out of my reach.

 

So, I contacted Mr. Subramaniam of ASA pens with the idea. We took a Pilot tank nib and feed and wanted to make an ED in an ebonite barrel. I wanted a flush design in which the barrel meeets seamlessly with the section. So, this is the result. Subbu has exceeded himself and created this masterpiece. Since, Pilot does not make separate nib units, Subbu had to destroy a Pilot 78g and was gracious enough to charge only for the nib. The design is primarily adapted from ASA spear

 

I called it Atsushi which means industrious and a compassionate warrior as I thought Pilot pens are understated workhorses. No affliation to ASA pens. You could contact Mr. Subramaniam in the ASA website or send an email to unik.services@hotmail.com

This is a beautiful realization of an excellent idea. With this pen you can use any of the Pilot steel nibs from the 78G, Prera, Plumix, etc ... I hope that ASA Pens makes this a regular offering on their site. A well written review with very nice photos as well.

Thanx for ur nice words. A regular offering might be difficult as Pilot nibs are not sold separately. Mr. Subramaniam was gracious enough to destroy a Pilot Tank pen for me, just for the nib and feed. Anyway, contact him and see what he says

An interesting pen, and certainly an interesting development! Quick question: I notice some threads at the top of the barrel, but no shots of the pen with the cap posted. Have you used it like that, and how does it write with the cap screwed on there? You would expect such posting aids more in a short-barreled pen, would you not?

The threads are used for posting the pen. The pen can be posted, but becomes a wand if it posted. I generally dont post my pens and added the top button as an aesthetic. Balance might be slightly off, but YMMV. I will include the pics of the cap posting after sometime

Can you share a pic comparing it one of the common pens? I am curious about Atsushi's dimensions .

Can you wait till monday. The pen is in my office. It is of the same dimensions as ASA Spear, except without the taper and slightly larger than Lamy Safari

I expect as much. Although my 2-nibbed Guider is a wand, by design, and I have no problem using it. But it does not become back-heavy...

That is one beautiful pen! I never thought about elucidating what I want in a pen before -- I just tried to adapt. I think I'll start thinking about the custom route.
