Stupid question:

I just bought this bottle and I can't understand the Japanese instructions.... Can you fill ink from the 350ml bottle directly?

I think of my FPs as my children.

No, it's not a stupid question. I see the diagrams and instructions on the box and on the bottle itself of the 350ml bottle. It is telling you how you can take off the plastic cap assembly (hinged cap like sauce bottles). I will try to translate it for you in a little while.

But even if you could take the cap completely off to fill directly from the large bottle, what would you do when the ink level goes down in the bottle? You have to be holding the pen at the very tip at the end of the barrel, while trying to dip the nib into the ink all the way at the bottom of the bottle. I can so see a fountain pen dropped into a tall bottle full of ink! :yikes:

I think these large bottle sizes were originally made to go hand in hand with the smaller 30ml size bottles (see my photos of those smaller squat shaped bottles in the previous page of this thread), so that you can top up the smaller bottle from this large bottle. That is why there is a nice lip to the plastic cap assembly when you pop open the hinged cap. This is so that the ink, while you are pouring some into the smaller bottle, will not dribble.

If you don't have the 30ml ink bottle, you could maybe use any other glass jars or even ink sample vials, to fill from this giant bottle?

OK. After reading the instructions I now realise that this is for recycling purposes. In Japan they have very strict recycling rules, and glass and plastic need to be separated before they can be put into the correct recycling bins for curb side rubbish collection. (I think in some areas you even have to put different coloured glass bottles into different bins.) Anyway, if you follow this instruction and take the cap off, you will have a bottle of ink with no cap so DON'T DO THIS unless you have finished the whole bottle of ink.

Here is the translation of the instruction anyway, for what it's worth.

1. Grab the Upper Cap at the Hinge as shown in the picture. Taking advantage of a vertical indent (Section “A”) on the Cap Body to the left side of the Hinge, tear off the ring around the Cap Body, being careful not to break the Hinge itself.

2. Holding on to the Upper Cap in your hand, tear off the ring around the Cap Body along the horizontal notch.

3. After tearing the ring off around the Cap Body, pull up on the Cap Body as shown in the picture, to remove the whole plastic cap assembly from the bottle.

Thank you so much Snak.... Sadly I did the above steps hoping to make the bottle more user-friendly and to aid me in filling. :wallbash:

They should have clearly stated to only perform this when finished with bottle of ink..

Oh NOooooooo!!! :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

What are you going to do? Do you have a suitable glass bottle with tightly fitting cap that you can use? Maybe a few old and used up ink bottles of smaller quantity? Or maybe even try to put a saran wrap over the opening with rubber band securing the wrap?

350ml is A LOT of ink so you don't want the ink evaporating on you and changing the quality before you get to use up all of it. So sorry my translation was too little too late.

Well, I used the original Cap and tapped it and it survived the upside down test. I hope that it will be fine. Thank you so much Snak

I guess well if it does hold up then good but if not I suggest you get a bigger bottle (maybe those mouth wash bottles) and decant ASAP

Wouldn't one of those glass water bottles be better? I'd worry about getting the mouthwash bottle really clean.. whereas the other one had water in it.

I mixed a powdered ink in a a hotel mouth wash bottle. I did a rinse in the bathroom sink and then mixed the ink. 7 months later, the ink looks great.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'm glad to hear that the original cap popped back on, but you have lost the working hinge to close the lid securely so a replacement bottle sounds like a good idea, especially as there is a lot of ink which (I assume) will take a while to use up. I would personally go for glass bottle. Those fancy drinking water that comes in smaller glass bottles may be good to get just for the bottles. They usually have twist caps so that would be handy too.

But I think you need a small jar to put the working amount of ink (to fill from). Anything from baby food jar to B&B jam jar to even those medical specimen collection jars may be useful (of course unused in the case of the latter).

  • 1 month later...

I'm so glad I came across this thread for I have been looking for a daily blue black writing ink. All of the reviews that I have read so far states that Pilot Blue Black is a well behaved ink with great water resistance. SNAK just confirmed it here.

Thank you Flaxmoore for starting this thread and showing the quality of this ink. Thank you SNAK for the all of the great information, pics, sample writing and excellent review of this ink. I plan on getting the 70 ml and the 350 ml bottles. The 70 ml because it has a plastic ink well/reservoir which makes filling your pen easier and I would just refill it every time it gets low with the 350 ml bottle.

@Algester. I am very familiar with that Betadine bottle. :) We have one at home right now.

It's somewhat similar to the blue Varsity - mainly due to the red sheen - but bluer; I think the Varsity is a bit darker.

Once used the empty bottle will be the ultimate ink trophy.

May your bottle never empty suddenly !

If you retained one of the 30 ml bottles, you can decant in small quantities, thus limiting the risk.

It has been my practice, since toppling a new 4.5 ounce bottle of HOD . That was sooooooooo much ink !
