Superb Pen Chest At Giveaway Price Of $40? Available Online And In Stores

I have too many bottles of ink to consider using the chest for its storage. The intended use I had for the box was to store stationary on top, repair supplies, converters, vintage parts, extra nibs and other miscellaneous items in the small drawers and the 2 bottom drawers would hold my fountain pens with pen trays cut to size.

So far, this layout has worked out nicely! If I can get home in time while there's still some nice lighting, I'll take pictures.

Does anyone know a place to get a similar product in Europe?

I only come across plastic or metal tool chests.

Seems wooden chests are out of production, only Chinese stuff available.

I got mine from eBay - Check Trinity Wooden Tool Box.

The box was on the front porch when I arrived home from work today. (I had forgotten all about it!)

Very nice. Solid, well-made, with good-quality hardware. It's better made than the toolbox I looked at in Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/eight-drawer-wood-tool-chest-94538.html) for double the price last year. I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on that one, and I'm glad I waited.

Now, while letting the fumes evaporate, I have to figure out where to keep it. (I know, I know, I've already had a week to figure this out...but now I have a proper sense of the box's size and weight.)

Some months ago I picked up an Ikea drawer unit that I use for my ink and art supplies. The drawers are just deep enough for Noodlers bottles. Just sayin'...( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40107872/# )

OoOoOoOoOh! Thanks for the Ikea link, debraji! How many bottles does it fit? A guess-tamation would be much appreciated!

The drawers are of equal size. 5 Noodlers bottles fit across; you can fit 9 rows of bottles in a drawer.

No trouble fitting Iroshizuku or Namiki Blue bottles, either.

With 6 drawers, it can fit a whole lotta ink.

Now, while letting the fumes evaporate...

A couple of things I noticed.

- Be aware the screws holding the plate for the twist lock are short. One of mine had fallen out when I received the chest; found it in the center drawer. I put a dab of wood glue on it and replaced it. Seems to be holding.

- Aired out the chest, but what really dissipated the odor was paste-waxing (Simoniz) the finish. I just wanted to apply a layer of protection (and bond with the chest?) but later I noticed the varnish odor had completely disappeared.

- Stay tuned for my pen tray insert design - it's pure genius! (group eyeroll - hey, cut that out!)

This wonderful item now seems to be out of stock. Does anyone know if Costco plans to have more?

Mine, too! The offending screw was AWOL, in my case -- the lower of the two. Oh, well...

Mine was the lower also. We probably got the same person on the assembly line. Breathing all those fumes s/he was too high to screw!

Best bet for a missing screw is to just go to the closest real hardware store with real people in it. It may be difficult to find in these days of big-box stores, but it will be worth it. If you're missing one, take one it needs to match. Even if they don't have it, they can tell you precisely what to look for or what would work as well or better.

I am happy to say I am NOT suffering from "having any screws loose nor missing!"

Do you mind share a link or pic of the particular Simoniz you used? I can't get rid of the smell after the chest sitting in the garage for two weeks. Did you just applied to the wood surface? How about the drawer sides?

Thanks!

I used this, but I think any all-purpose paste wax would do. I don't know much about woodworking and finishes, but I'm guessing the solvents/cleaners in the wax helped to dissipate the odors.

Johnson's Paste Wax or Briwax would probably be better choices for the wood, but Simoniz also works.

Of if you're into "rolling your own" so to speak, then you can make your own version with a three-part mixture of beeswax (or combination of beeswax and carnauba wax), tung oil (or boiled linseed oil), and mineral spirits (or turpentine). Just be careful when you mix in the volatile oil and mineral spirits into the warmed (NOT HOT!) beeswax. Stir it all together and keep in a wide-mouthed, shallow car or tin. Of course then this has it's own smell, but should be gone within a day, and some people like the smell of turpentine, or you can get low-oder mineral spirits.

An update--maybe.

Another FPN member sent me the customer service number for Costco, and I called (800.774.2678) to see if or when the tool chest might be restocked; several members said they had received a "backordered" notice. The agent I spoke with checked my location (San Antonio) and said that there were several in stock at one of our local stores priced at less than $30. He also said that when present stock was exhausted the item would not be reordered.

So, should anyone be interested in this pen/tool chest, I suggest you call the CS rep to see if there might be some available in your area.

Just sayin'.
