I'm consolidating all my stuff into one location as we write. This was a very nice heads-up.

Mine arrived and I am impressed. The box is big and there are some nice things about it.

The smell is just the finish not quite cured completely. The finish is actually pretty well done. It's even and the color is consistent. It's smooth and seems like it will be fairly durable. The smell reminds me of spray lacquer, but I couldn't guarantee that's what it is.

The box is constructed of an unknown, fine-grained hardwood as primary with a quality hard board (Masonite like board similar to pegboard but smooth on both sides) for the sides and bottom. The joints seem solid and the tolerances surprisingly good.

The drawers slid well and fit evenly all around. The front panel had a couple of nice surprises. It is actually attached so that it can't fall out, yet slides well and when you put it up, it's held to the carcass by a couple of discrete magnets. Nice touches. And the ruler along the edge that is visible when the front panel is open is actually a good job of screen printing. No numbers, but it does show inches and metric.

As for spacing, I tried a bunch of different ink bottles to see what fits into the top compartment. The tallest that still fit was my Parker penman bottle. Anything shorter than Noodlers and Aurora fit in the top. My Noodlers bottle fit into the deeper drawer in front. So that means my Waterman, Herbin, private reserve, Quink, Diamine all fit into the big top compartment.

Overall, I quite like it and while not fine cabinetry, it is well made for what it is and a fantastic bargain at the price. Hope this helps those sitting on the fence.

For those that have this Costco model, can you tell me the inside height of the top? Trying to figure out how tall of an ink bottle would fit up there, or if bottles would fit up there?

Thanks in advance,

Moe

Diamine and Pelikan 4001 bottles do, Rohrer Und Klingner do not.

And of course Noodler's doesn't, not by a long shot. The tall and skinny drawer in the middle *will* hold Noodler's but it's just not wide enough to hold two bottles side by side.

Although when I bought the box a few hours ago, I was notified that it was on back order, I just received a message that it has been shipped with an estimated arrival of 6/12/15 (next Friday).

I too thank Penbrute for posting!

I'm thoroughly happy with mine (both of mine actually),and plan to spend the weekend stocking them up from my assorted mess. Thanks penbrute. I have a question for those who know something about wood. Is the entire chest made of wood? Or is some part of it particle board or another substitute? Either way it looks great and is as sturdy and well-made as can be. It looks like it could be Captain Kidd's treasure chest when closed!

What a boon for those with multiple pens, which probably includes just about everybody here.

One photo had inserts in the drawer with grooves for pens. Do we a source for those?

FPN member Gary Lehrer had the gray ones back in stock as of Thursday. The other colors should also be in stock. I suspect he has seen quite a jump in orders for these in recent weeks. See

When it rains it pours. The week before I saw this thread on the Costco box I got a really nice deal on an old silverware chest that is being converted to pen storage. Between that chest and this box I suspect I will soon have a serious case of Empty Pen Slot Syndrome or EPSS.

The main, visible parts are solid wood. I was expecting veneered plywood or mdf, but it's actually hard wood. Looks like of like cherry in terms of grain, and is reasonably hard (tried the fingernail test in a spot that wouldn't show). The bottom of the main chest, and the sides and bottoms of the drawers are a form of particle board known as hard board, or masonite, or lots of other names. Seems like a relatively nice quality hard board, too.

The finish seems like it will be durable, yet doesn't seem plastic. You can tell it's real wood. And that's an accomplishment with many modern furniture and wood finishers, especially of cheap furniture.

Whoever designed this obviously wanted a quality product and didn't skimp on the key things that will make it useful and last. Of course, that's my first few hours worth of observation. Next week the glue may all come apart, but considering the care taken in some of the other things, like finish of the insides of the case and the tolerances of the gaps around the drawers, I kind of doubt they take that much care in everything else but skimp on something like glue.

Got mine today. Just want to add to the ink fitting post above. Current regular Montblanc ink boxes are very tight fits. I have to force the lid down a little for it to close.

On a separate note, when I was lining up the chest and putting my pens in there, my wife joked that if a thief breaks in the house, he/she can just take the entire chest and run. I was really thinking about this and getting a bit worried. Anyone had the same thoughts? :)

The thought had briefly went through my mind but lets face it the same could be said about a mac tool box or your wife's jewellery box which could get just as expensive. Or some home entertainment systems or your computer or any number of portable things. Unless the thief is specifically targeting your pens I suspect they are just as liable to dump your pens and stuff the tool box full of the more readily fenced stuff in your home.

For anyone in the Portland, Or Metro area the Costco in Wilsonville has at least 3 in stock and they are still at the $39.99 price.

I've been hemming and hawing over picking one up for days and of course it's now back-ordered when I go to pull the trigger. I've sent Costco CS an email to inquire about when it might be in stock again. Hopefully it's soon!
