As a curious question, did your trays have a smell to them when you got them???

Mine showed up today whilst the Mrs. and I were enjoying a glass of wine on the front porch.

"Where are you going to put THAT?" she asked.

It is large. I don't have enough FP gear (yet) to fill it, but combined with my vintage shaving stuff (razors, brushes, blades, etc.) I can probably justify keeping it.

I still haven't figured out where to put mine. It's not ugly but I don't want it somewhere visible and it doesn't really fit on the shelves in my office closet.

When an old friend of mine was a first year graduate student @ Yale (1974) she kept her television in a box which she had skirted & it served as an occasional table in between uses. Perhaps you could have a "padded covering" made & let it serve as an ottoman?

Does anyone know a place to get a similar product in Europe?

I only come across plastic or metal tool chests.

Seems wooden chests are out of production, only Chinese stuff available.

I got one online, and only had to pay $2 for a non-member purchase. You can't get them in the stores if you aren't a member.

Maybe now, I can get better organized.

I bought my last batch a couple of years ago and didn't notice anything other than a mild felt smell that completely dissipated in a few weeks.

I'm going to try the zig-zag (aka concertina, aka accordion) folded card stock first and see how that works. I have some nice acid-free stock that should work well if scored and folded carefully. If that doesn't work or is too much of a pain, then I'll go for the pen holders. I'm just not a big fan of the flocked covering they have.

Personal preference.

But my biggest problem, I suspect, will be where to put it. I current store almost my whole collection on top of my chest of drawers. That will be too high.

What a problem to have!

Not sure where in the Netherlands you are, but my buddy runs a kitchen store in Eindhoven. He may know, as he seems to know all about lots of stuff. Let me know if you want me to ask him, or if you're in the area you can stop in and see him. Great guy.

The chest arrived today (on schedule per delivery notice) in the "Big Brown Truck." Certainly well packed & after opening it I was pretty amazed @ the quality of the construction & finish. I did remove all the drawers for a period of "airing out." But am very pleased @ the useful storage it offers for the price. Sure my vintage chest has a "nicer" look & is more appealing to me BUT since it has "filled up" & I haven't seen another one @ a similar price I appreciate the opportunity to have this one (especially @ the price!)

To those who've opened and aired their arrivals.

Did any odors dissipate?

What are the odors?

How airtight is this chest? Would celluloid (plastics) fair well being stored in this chest?

Looks nice, crazy to not buy one, just need to know what's what.

I got mine a while ago. I'm still in the process of airing mine out. I leave it with the drawers pulled out in the sun for about 6 hours a day. Been at it for about 7 days and the odors are pretty much gone. It is a quite a strong smell initially probably from the material that lined the bottoms of the drawers. I haven't put pens in the chest yet, but I'm pretty sure that the plastics will do quite well. Not much risk of getting scratched as the bottom of the drawers are lined.

Thanks, this is such a positive opportunity, simply need to know if its fit is so tight that air won't circulate.

archival slotters can be made, scratches no problem.

After checking again, I'm 99.99% sure it is not completely airtight. There is quite a bit of wiggle room for the air to go in, so it is by no means perfectly sealed.

It's not airtight. If you were to hold it with the front facing down all the drawers would fall out.

It's a good thing to not be airtight. Unless you're in a bad environment (horrible humidity or aridity, or chemicals in the air), most materials benefit from some degree of airflow. At least that's what I remember from my work in museums.
