I suppose anything about the size or larger than Montblanc 149 can be considered oversized pen. So my favourites are those shown on the right side of Montblanc 149 in the photo: Danitrio, Nakaya, Sailor and Namiki Emperor Size Vermillion.

David or Goliath ? This is the question. (Danitrio Genkai versus Pelikan 100)

And a bundle of Japanese FP less or more oversized

Do you ever write with that Emperor? It would be a handful.

I had the thought that it's a ridiculous pen to be used for writing. I was proven wrong when I tried it personally and found it comfortable to hold. I use it without posting the cap and it feels balanced. I find it more comfortable to use than Yukari Royale size.

Only part I am not too keen with the pen is the need to unscrew the bottom of the pen to open the valve for the ink to flow before writing.

Just to add on, I used all the pens in the picture. :)

People after my own heart!

The Emperor was a recent acquisition. I tried it thinking it would be way too big for me. However the moment I handled it and starting writing with it, I knew it had to come home with me.

It's a daily carry. The size is very deceptive because it would seem the pen would be unwieldy. On the contrary. It's one of the most comfortable and balanced pens I have. And I am a 5' 8" 140 lbs guy with smallish hands.

I really admire you guys—I'm guessing you're guys from the pen size; it's a little hard to tell from your avatars—for carrying and using those big pens. I bought a couple of big Namikis from Worldlux a few years ago. They looked so big, that I never inked them. One is an eyedropper filler. Now I have to go find them and reconsider.

Speaking of the KOP urushis, there are two reddish colors, the red

http://nibs.com/SailorKingofPenRedUrushi.htm

and the orange, which CFP describes as "warm red vermilion"

http://nibs.com/sailor-king-of-pen-orange-urushi.htm

A major difference is that the threads on the red version are black, while the threads on the orange version are the same color as the rest of the pen.

Which color matches the vermilion of the Yukari Royale and the Emperor most closely?

My Pilot in vermillion is redder than either of those on nibs.com. I have a King of Pen or two, but they aren't red or orange.

I did state previously that my King of Pen was my favorite, but I am having some second thoughts. I do like the red feed on the vermillion pens.

It's a 10 pen Aston case. I have as many cases as I have pens, and the Aston is the only one that is able to fit the Emperor.

  • 3 months later...

After using my new 'Sailor King of Pen' for a few weeks, switching to the smaller '1911 Large' feels slightly awkward!

I'm wondering if I'll ever get a normal sized pen again!

What are your favourite Japanese/otherwise oversize pens?

None... I hate oversize pens. I wish people who have a need to compensate would just get a SUV.

Inked: Sailor King Pro Gear, Sailor Nagasawa Proske, Sailor 1911 Standard, Parker Sonnet Chiselled Carbon, Parker 51, Pilot Custom Heritage 92, Platinum Preppy

Hmm ... that might be worth it. I've committed to buy a fairly special and expensive custom pen recently, so it would have to be a while from now. Thanks for info though! I'll have to look into that.

Oh, I saw pictures of that lovely custom pen when the maker posted them online! Would love to hear what you think of it when you get a chance to use it.

My favourite oversized Japanese pen is probably my Sailor KOP with the Crosspoint nib. But for daily use I prefer my Yukari Royales. The Emperor only gets used at home.

I just got the notification from USPS that it was delivered! I'm at university for the next 3 hours but I'll definitely post about it later tonight or tomorrow. For those wondering what it is, it's a Shawn Newton pen in the style of the MB Hemingway and has a flexy, massive handmade nib and every bit of the trim (3 cap bands, a wavy clip with exposed ring, and accent band on blind cap) is made of solid 14k. I know there's pictures on Shawn's Instagram and website.
