Yeah, you've got that right :lticaptd: !

 

I've been enjoying using a 4 : 1 = Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown : Noodler's Black ink mixture. I find Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Brown right out of the bottle too weak looking. When I add the above amount of Noodler's Black, however, it's a pretty nice brown ink.

 

A lot of the time adding a much smaller proportion of black ink is called for, however.

 

In making blue/black inks I usually start with an 8 : 1 ratio. Making a color darker this way is a bit tricky, and the addition of a very little black ink can make for a big change. And then there are colors other than black which can be added to make a color a darker shade. Yeah, lots of variables and a broad field of inky adventure await the explorer.
