How To Tell If It's Genuine?

Hi,

I would like to ask you for advice. I have just bought a platinum modern maki-e makie crane fountain pen from ebay and I would like to know how I can make sure that the pen is authentic. The pen is a gift for my girlfriend and I want to be sure that it is genuine.

IF you post a picture it should be pretty obvious if it's fake copy.

 

But just so you know the Platinum Modern Maki-e aren't really Maki-e they're screen printed, that's why they're $140 to $190 as opposed to $600 to $3,000.

 

For example this Platinum PTL-5000 is a Platinum pen, but it was an aftermarket paint job done by Engeika and sold as a Wancher Limited pen.

In fifteen years I have not seen any modern Platinum make copied. There have been attempts by less than a handful of folks to pass off basic Platinums with music nibs as something grander, special, unique, etc. With matching higher prices. Minor forgotten successes at best.

 

If you acquired a screen printed pen, enjoy. If only an absolutely painstakingly decorated real make makes your day, save your money.

I *hated* buying a makie pen that was "just" screen printed because to me that wasn't real makie. But after much discussion here, it's just that there's all sorts of makie and some sellers (on FPN or ebay) make the cheap screenprinted ones SOUND like they're real makie.

The only real makie pens I know hail from sailor,namiki, danitrio and nakaya and they cost like an artwork from a museum...

Silk screen makies are cheaper though and these are sold by sailor, pilot and platinum like wise

Buy a Makie from a reputable dealer.

perhaps like Bruno taut I would say Japanese "inspired" MB also did it IIRC along with raden inlays another japanese "inspired" design

of course they have the budget to say they are authentic
