Delta, A Taste Of Orange

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

During the LA pen show, the Delta Dolcevita caught my eye. I liked the oversize, the orange and black with sterling trim was beautiful. but couldn't quite swing a deal.

So since then, I have been looking and stalking but not really expecting to actually get one, and I was right, I didn't get a Dolcevita, I got a Colosseum! and at a very reasonable price. Came without box or papers, but since I wanted a pen, not a box, that was OK.

Specs:

Limited series of 1926

Ancient Pompeiin motif

Hand-turned acrylic resin body

Sterling Silver trim

18kt gold two tone nib

147mm capped, 15.5 diameter

The pen is in great cosmetic shape and the sac functional. It has a little flow issue, what I call a slow starter, but before I do anything I will just use it and see how it works after a decent "run in " period. The nib is smooth, a little wide for my taste, but can always be changed later.

So here she is.....

Congratulations on your new pen. These certainly have a distinctive look.

Interesting. I did not know Delta made any lever fill pens.

Yes, Delta uses the lever on several special editions. I liked that feature.

Cartridge converter for practicality, but they lac aesthetics.

Love that cap band!

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I have been trying to improve my photographing skills, and the Delta makes a great model.

Here are the results.

I especially enjoy the "topless" photos.

Congratulations! The Colosseum is about the greatest looking pen ever made by anyone!

When I got mine, I rotated the section to make the nib and the lever line up which I think added to the esthetics. I also diminushed the pressure between the tips of the tines to enhance the ink flow (and boy, do those Deltas need it): With the feed looking upwards, I put my second fingers under the nib and pressed the sides or shoulders of the nib down a little using the nails on my first fingers. Apart from that, I use Herbin ink and Quink in my Deltas to keep up the flow (they run better than the Delta inks).

Best regards

Ursus

And, by the way: I always post mine - it makes it soooo beautiful to look at when writing!

Good tips,

She is still a little bit of a slow starter, but once its flowing it OK. ( I will take a new look at the gap to see if it wants to be opened up). I do like the rotating the section idea. Did you use a little heat?, friction or threaded ? I would like to check out the sac anyways. I have been using Diamine oxblood, nice thick ink! and the color works with the pen too.

I like the Colosseum nib better than the Dolcevita.

The Italians sure make some nice pens, but some don't work for beans, despite looking great!

So far I have been pleased with Delta, (knock on wood)

I have a Visconti Homo Sapiens that is on its third trip back to Italy! Its got a great Palladium nib that won't stay in the section! or when it does, it dribbles ink... But its a beautiful looking pen and writes nice (when it works). I guess its just homesick!

As a physician, I have had a few patients, also Homo sapiens, who had similar problems. I didn't send them to Italy; I sent them to the urologist. There's a lesson in here, somewhere.

Actually, mine was not glued at all... I just placed one hand on the section (and not on the nib) and one on the barrel and turned without any use of force. As the thread is on the barrel and not the section, the clip and the lever will still lign up when the cap is screwed on.

When it comes to shipping Deltas back to Delta because of a bad flow (which I have tried around three times), my experience is that they just ship them back again because they think that the flow is as it should be.

Now, if you should end up getting a huge distance between the tines because you overdid the correction, it can be cured as well (I have had to save a few myself after messing them up pretty badly, and it went quite well).

By the way, my Colosseum is always filled with Herbin's Vert Empire (laurel green) - which is very free running and suits the leaves on the clip and band nicely, apart from being rather dark and conservative enough for almost any kind of correspondance and business use.

They have quite a few, in one LE series or another. Always some of their most beautiful pens.
