Ink Mushrooms

A while back (>6 mo), I thought I had SITB in a bottle of PR Black Cherry. (Amber later informed me it was not SITB and was in fact normal.)

Thinking it was SITB I strained the ink through a coffee filter, and put it into two new containers, one of which I added phenol, the other I did not. A month or two ago I noticed a growth on the top of the untreated container. I left it sitting around because I was meaning to take a picture to add to the annals here.

A couple days ago I looked at it and noticed all these round black spots on the top that I presume to be fruiting bodies.

I am not very well equipped for macro-photography, but I can make more attempts if someone needs a less blurry image.

I had not used the ink since I did the straining. I may have opened the jar since then, I am not sure. I do not think I did as proper of job sterilizing the jar as generally advised. Regardless I have no intention of trying to salvage the ink.

That does look like a particularly virulent fruiting body. Cleanse with fire.

Yuck. Warty. As this is the untreated ink, do you think you'll try Sam Capote's phenol ratios for clearing (ie not just preventing) SITB? I mean, it's already disposable and clearly perfect for the next experimental test isn't it.

What a beautiful colony! You should take up mycology as a career.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Eww, that is gross... But I want to see what it'll grow into.

I can conceivably manage this for two more months. I do have really strong Phenol as well as the 3% (IIRC) product Sam Capote linked. Given my limited time window I do not think it is practical to do a recurrence test of straining it adding phenol and see if anything grows over time.

I can add phenol to see if it appears to kill the colony, or I can wait to see if anything interesting develops if left as is. I am more inclined to see if it does anything, but I suppose I will put it to a vote.

I am in complete agreement with this. Though I'll add another "ewwwwwww!"

OMG that is super cool! I think those little black spots may even be the spores! But, I am wondering where are the rhizomes are most fungi usually have them.

Ya know, if you send that culture to me, I'll actually try to do some micrographs of them. I got a large pack of microscope slides and cover slips coming to me that I'm dying to use. And with the ink, the culture is already stained and ready to go!

Ha ha ha. Chuckling out loud here now. I'll be happy (well, curious) to to see those weird slide photographs extend this squeamish entertainment to a new level. (Assuming they can be photographed of course.)

BAD AMBER

That's STIB.

Though it may have come from the jar. I've gotten to adding phenol preemptively.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

How would one go about preserving and securing such a thing for transport?

A sample vial would be good. If you would rather transport in original container, you can put some Plumber's tape (Teflon tape which is the white tape stuff used on pipes) on the threadings where the cap meets. Then, ziplock bag it for added security. Ship in bubble mailed or bubble-wrap it. I use this method for bringing small liquids to and from school.

If I shipped the entire container it would certainly slosh around splash over the colony. Do I not need to worry about such things? I am perhaps considering it much more fragile than it really is.

If put in a sample vial, do I just lift out the colony, or should I put ink in the vial too?

You don't have to worry too much about splashing around I think. The fungus is living off the ink anyways.

If you are doing a vial, it would be awesome if you can lift it out. If not, that's fine too.

I also agree with this. Am getting quite curious.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is a little clearer shot: You can also see now all sorts of little dots on the ink surface; not sure if those are new or not.

Because the color is just so much the same and they are so smooth and shiny, there is a part of me that wonders if those are mushrooms at all and not just droplets of "ink" that somehow were pulled onto the surface of the growth. Alas, I forgot to poke one before retireieving the mass.

But, I am wondering where are the rhizomes are most fungi usually have them.

Maybe they were below the surface?
