New To Wahl-Eversharp

It took me some time to figure out what someone over on the Reddit fountain pen forum was using. All I saw was a close-up of the nib of his fountain pen. Turns out it was an adjustable nib on an Wahl-Eversharp.

I found several on ebay and managed to snag it today. Is it shallow to say that this is the first pen I ever purchased for the looks alone? I normally buy Esterbrooks or vintage Waterman pens.

Can you tell me if the adjustable nib was used on any other Wahl-Eversharp or is it unique to the Dorics?

And one last thing, I am assuming this might need a restored (or at least an ink sac replacement). Are there any issues I should be aware of (peculiar to the model)...I mean-is it better to send of for restoration or attempt at home? I have such a crush on this pen that I don't want to mess it up.

Thank you in advance for any advice. Here are some pictures of the pen.

Very nice looking pen. Always liked those, especially with that cap band, knowing it will protect the lip. Due to the type of filler, and the possibility of the plastic being more fragile than some, I'd send it out, but I also have no experience with repairing anything but lever and button fillers, and a little Snorkel work. Should you ever want to replate the clip and band, David Kirchheimer does great work along those lines.

You should read this- talks about the nib, and has a pic of your pen;

Also, Syd Saperstien, the Wahl-nut has his site; you might email him (hell, for all I know he might be the moderator for this part of FPN) http://www.pensburymanor.com/pensburymanor/Pensbury_Manor_Home.html

If it were my pen? I'd send it off. Congratulations on a great looking pen. And, no, it's not shallow to want a pen for its looks. I have a few of those. Fortunately, almost every one turned out to be a good writer. I do still miss one Stipula I sold because it wrote like dreck. It was sooo nice to look at.

Some people say they march to a different drummer. Me? I hear bagpipes.

Right you are. I am your Maytag Repairman of a Moderator for this forum. The filling system involved relies on a rear end of barrel packing box (2 rubber washers sandwiched between 3 lavers of oiled felt, and a front end gasket attached to the plunger rod. The plunge action creates a vacuum that when "broken" with the nib emerged in ink suck ink into the pen with that one downstroke. To make it work both gaskets and packing must be almost entirely air tight.

Ah! I see you are a fellow PDX-ian! We are having a pen meeting Sunday. PM me for details.

These rod/vacuum fill Dorics are not easy to repair. They work very much like the 40's Sheaffer's rod/plunger/vac fill pens. I have suggestions for a good repair person or two for them. Maybe Syd works on them too, I don't know. Personally, I hate working on them and send them out.

The blue ones and the green ones are very attractive, too!

I just noticed your ID and recognize it, I thought it was "The absolute best twin" at first. We allow pens in unrestored condition at meetings ;)
