Montblanc Safety No.4 F Nib Replacement

Good Day All,

This pen came to me in way of a collection I bought. I have owned it about 1 year now. I bought the reproduction clip about a month ago and yesterday received the correct nib for it. It currently has a Warranted 14K nib. After a long search and a few dollars I think I have the correct nib.

Now I have decide to try and swap the nib and restore the pen myself. How do I get the nib out? Does the collar around the nib slide off? I don't want to force anything because all the parts seem to be some what fragile. Is there any seals that need replaced? I have search the net for instruction and came up empty. Thanks in advance.

That's a neat pen! I take it from your post that you haven't repaired many safety pens... If that's the case, I HIGHLY recommend you let someone more skilled in repairing safety pens do this for you, given the value of your pen. This repair forum is full of warnings to novice repairers about practicing on cheap pens first... in your case, practice on much less expensive safeties... particularly for replacing the cork seal.

For the nib swap, the first thing you'll want to do is soak the nib/collar/feed unit in water. I do this by putting it through several cycles in my ultrasonic cleaner. Once all the dried ink gets out of the way you can sometimes remove the collar w/ firm finger pressure. Examine it carefully - sometimes German safeties had a pin through the collar! (I don't know if that particular one does, but be sure to check first). You have to move the collar forward a few millimeters until the nib is loose, then you can wiggle it out.

The cork seal will most likely need to be replaced; David Nishimura's web site has an excellent primer for safety repairs - check it out. Just forward of the exposed threads on the twist knob you should see a pin that holds the 'feed shaft' fast to the twist knob mechanism. That will have to be removed and requires some special tools to do it right. If the pin is brass you shouldn't have problems, but steel pins are almost always corroded and can be a real pain to remove even with the right tools. Once the pin is out you can pull the twist knob off from the feed shaft, and replace the cork seal that's inside the twist knob mechanism. You have the option of cutting/fitting a replacement cork or using rubber O-rings w/ pure silicone grease. I've done both; O-rings are simpler, but sometimes I have to use cork if I can't find O-rings in the the right size.

Don Jr,

Thanks for the warning. After reading your post I will check out Davids site and do some soaking to get a better look at things then decide if I want to proceed.

I have not worked on any safety pens at all. I will update you as I proceed, again thanks.
