Day 20: Toshida Ikari

Toshida-sensei is technically a human from Earth, but has been cursed to immortality by his dying wife, one of Fuyuki's former lives. As he never loved her in their own marriage, the curse requires that he must remain alive until one of her reincarnations falls in love with him.

So he has wandered, eternally a young man, alongside his equally immortal four-year-old son, Hibiki, seeking out each of his wife's reincarnations and hopefully his own death. Lord Fujiwara Fuyuki was the last known reincarnation, to whom he was swordmaster and mentor. He has trained many warriors belonging to the Fujiwara clan, Hyousuke included. A grim man, he is always serious, and appears perpetually tired and ghostly despite his immense strength.

He and Hajime were actually members of the same military unit in Japan, but time behaves strangely when one slips between worlds. Though he and Hajime were the same age on Earth, Toshida-sensei has been living in The Floating World for over 800 years, while Hajime crossed over 12 years later in Earth time, and has been living in the demon world for only 5 years.

Day 21: Little Hyousuke!! Eeee~! He's about four or five here. Children are hard to draw.. especially their hair. It's so soft and fine. ><;

Hyousuke is the illegitimate child of a brother to the shogun, Lord Taira, and presumably a slave woman. Because he is less than baseborn, his father's wife treated him with disdain from the moment he was plopped on her lap. Rather than attend to his education and actually raise him, she allowed him to wander wild in the women's quarters of the palace. He's smiling here at Lord Fujiwara himself, the first person--aside from his busy and often-absent father--to treat him with true kindness during a visit to his uncle.

It's thanks to Fuyuki that Hyousuke was sent to him for fostering when he was a little older.

Elwyn's Survival Tips, #1: Do NOT eat home-canned green beans, unless you're going to die anyway.

El looks how I feel right now, stupid cold. She's exhausted thanks to running from zombies, though. Way tougher than me.

She 's the protagonist of a novel I started for NaNoWriMo 2012, which I still have yet to finish. A small town lady from the Midwest, she ventures to NYC to visit a friend who made it big. The Outbreak occurs while she's out there, and she finds herself trapped in the New York Public Library throughout the autumn and winter, with only one companion, Charlotte.

They must battle starvation and other people, as well as the undead, as El tries to make it back home, Charlie tagging along after losing her entire family.

Sorry it's unfinished--ran out of ink.

Day 24: Hyousuke and Hajime. A little bit of PDA on the street after Hajime gives Hyousuke a red silk scarf to keep him warm, fufufu~!

This song has inadvertently become their theme in my head. The drawing looks a bit weird, but I think it captures their emotions very well. So even if it isn't my greatest, it's one of my favorites.

Day 25: Reiha, a mountain kitsune working with Hajime and Hyousuke against Hannya and his underlings.

A bit of Iroshizuku Kiri-same for the outline.

Reiha smiles and laughs easily, is confident and strong, and is quite...uh...bawdy. Hajime often accuses her of being perverse, to which she only shrugs and laughs. She has been working with him as an undercover agent for the last few years, under the orders of her uncle, Councilman Fujiwara Yujiro, and helps Hyousuke learn the ropes of living a secret life once he's drawn into the operation against Hannya. She does more information gathering, while Hajime takes people out.

This ink is a bit odd. While wet, it smudges like graphite, it has a grainy look, and smells like mint. It's permanent once dry.

Day 26: Empress Parvati

A demi-divine being, she was once a mighty warrior who united the continent into one Empire. After 10,000 years of rule, however, she has been reduced to a figurehead. This has more to do with her apathy toward the world, after living so long, than due to a lack of power. Though Lord Fujiwara's cause was just, she was forced to declare him a rebel when he attacked first, and ordered his execution once captured.

 

Shortly after the end of the revolution, she was found decapitated in her private chambers, with a look of peace on her features.

Looking a bit freer and more relaxed. Perhaps in her younger days?

 

Side note: normally, she doesn't wear clothing on her upper body. Her hair also drags on the floor when it's not bound up, which is why it's in vogue for nobles of the Floating World to have such long hair themselves.

Day 28: "The maids know everything."

Two former pleasure slaves, Tama and Akiko had no one to turn to and no place left to go after being given their freedom. Though having left separate noble houses, they wound up working in the same brothel for a time. Until Hajime found them, paid off their debts, and hired them to work at the Yukihana, a tea house he owns and uses as a base of operations.

Tama is a kitchen maid, specializing in making sweets for banquets at the often boisterous front of the house, and for tea ceremonies held in the few small rooms throughout the gardens. She is a romantic at heart, though has a pouty demeanor.

Akiko is head maid of the back, secret half of the tea house where Hajime, and eventually Hyousuke, live. She is calm and efficient, with a knack for first aid and natural remedies. She is very aware of everything that goes on in the tea house, and works hard to keep her new masters' secrets.

Day 29: Fujiwara brothers. Unfinished because I was running out of ink and didn't feel like refilling the pen. Lazy, lazy. But man, these 2550 nibs create the FINEST lines of any pen I own. I love 'em!

Yujiro is the second son of the family, and Fuyuki is the fourth, and youngest. Of the four, they are the only two to have the same mother, Yukika--a human adopted into the kitsune, or fox demon, clan.

As noble family holdings are passed down to the eldest daughter, rather than a son, a family without daughters will be taken over by the youngest son, as the older sons have often been married off to other families or taken military or scholarly positions by the time the current clan head passes.

Yujiro is both scholar and military strategist, having been sent to study in the western part of the kingdom and later serving in the Imperial army for a period of 50 years. As the youngest Fujiwara son, Fuyuki became heir within the hour of his birth, in which their mother died of a hemorrhage.

After the assassination of the Empress, a temporary council was made to govern the Empire until a permanent government could be drawn up. Yujiro was made Councilman of matters of justice, in honor of his executed brother who was viewed as a hero by the people and canonized as a saint of mercy and justice.

Hajime, Reiha, and Hyousuke receive orders directly from Yujiro in the novel's current events.

Day 30 of The Year of the Doodle:

Fujimoto Hajime (January 1st, 1844) and Toshida Ikari (June 21st, 1844) were both part of the same military unit in Japan, the Shinsengumi, though Ikari vanished not long after joining. His wife, Kotorii was killed during the suppression of a rebellion that resulted in fires spreading across Kyoto, and their own home. After attending to her funeral rites, he and their young son, Hibiki, (both of them now immortal from Kotorii's curse) disappeared in August of 1864.

Hajime on the other hand served with the Shinsengumi until the group was disbanded. He has fought during several wars, and became an assassin for the Meiji era government, spying on and weeding out the corrupt. His first wife died in childbirth, and he had one son with his second wife before he, too, disappeared in the midst of battle during the summer of 1877. The subject of his wives and children is a touchy one.

Both men slipped through portals to the Floating World. Though their disappearances were 13 years apart in Earth time, Ikari had been living in the demon world for over 800 years by the time Hajime passed through, the last 330 of them served under the Fujiwara family. Hajime also serves under Lord Fujiwara after being found by the fox demon.

Hajime doesn't normally wear his hair in a braid... I think Hyousuke did it. >_>; Actually, I penciled Ikari in first, and realized Hajime's hair as he normally wears it would be in the way, so I had to improvise. It looks so weird on him, lol. Ikari looks completely disgusted, or annoyed. I love it.

Day 31: Wow, a whole month already done! Time flies! Charlie, the secondary protagonist, from my zombie-survival story.

Charlie (short for Charlotte, which she thinks sounds too stuffy and old-timey), is El's partner--in many ways. She is the bright and cheeky half of the duo, though slightly unstable since her twin sister was bitten and turned. Though she starts out weak and often too terrified to venture from the safety of their base, she eventually gains confidence in El's company, and becomes quite the undead search-and-destroy machine. She's the one who pushes the pair to leave the city in search of other survivors.
