Thanks! I wanted to push myself to be a little more creative this year, and to use all my pens/inks/paper even more than I do in just novel writing. xD I have lots of blank sketchbooks that have been sitting around for years..

Day 12: My novel's protagonist, Hyousuke, again. I settled on his facial structure (drawing wise, anyway--I can picture it in my head just fine, lol). I am not very good at drawing clothing... I need to sit in front of a pile of blankets or some curtains and practice.

I have drawings of this quality in my head but something goes haywire somewhere between the brain and the pencil!

The best advice I can give for someone who is thinking about drawing, or wants to draw, is to practice. Practice all the time, every day, even if it's just a doodle. The more you do it, the easier it comes. Like riding a bike or writing well.

Day 13: Today's doodle is for the ladies. Haha, well.. not really. The secondary protagonist to my novel, he's Hyousuke's older, and jealous (hence the green ink) human lover. An overworked governmental assassin. He is cool and collected (normally) compared to Hyousuke's fiery temper and passionate personality. He has quite the deadpan sense of humor.

Day 16: Perspective is hard.

Story excerpt:

"Hyousuke woke with a sharp hiss of air between his teeth, his sleeping robe stuck to his sweaty form, and heart hammering against the cage of his ribs, a wild animal that fought to escape the flames in his memories and left a coppery taste in his mouth. In the dark room he still saw the tidal waves of hot fire that licked the palace beams and wicked up paper walls to the ceiling. The crash of splintered wood and roaring flame filled his ears, though his one-room apartment was silent in the early hours of the capital city. The flames flicked apart in his mind, showing Hajime, the man who had pushed him away from the falling beam, behind them. The man only smirked and turned away, then disappeared behind the hot curtain of fire.

Hyousuke began to scream, waking his neighbors. A dog in the street barked at the keening howl of anguish that rose out of him, starting a call and return of other dogs in the neighborhood. When his screaming ended, he fought against blanket and robe across the room for his old blade, broken in its sheathe, and cut off his hair to rid himself of the stench of four-year-old smoke.

It didn't go away."

Thank you on both accounts! Writing is "what I do," though not published yet. This story will be out in eBook form within the year, though. ^_^

 

The drawing is just for fun. Though now I'm thinking I might include some sketches in the book. Hmm..

Day 17 of The Year of the Doodle.

Story Excerpt:

 

"Opposite the pair sat a young-looking man in stately clothing--not somber or overly flashy, but with tasteful use of lavender and charcoal grey--which accentuated his silvery white hair. It was long and partially held up in a high ponytail, with a couple artful streams framing his face. Overall, he looked soft and elegant, effeminate. Hyousuke noticed that his ears were pointed, like his own. His eyes were a deep red, nearly brown unless he glanced aside and the light reflected in the irises just so. Those eyes were not soft as he watched Fujimoto and himself draw near.

Those eyes were hard, and narrowed at Hyousuke directly."

A former human slave, the man now known simply as "Boss" was cast aside by his master in favor of another. The jealousy drove him to madness and turned him into a hannya, an angry demon fueled by that jealousy. In the current age, he makes his living taking the family members of those indebted to him through gambling, or through outright kidnapping, and sells them as slaves to nobles of the capital and to rich foreigners. He is intelligent and beautiful, as befits a demon of his age, but utterly psychotic, paranoid, and cruel.

Day 18: Lord Fujiwara Fuyuki. He has his own story to be written, but serves as a background character to my current novel.

 

Outline: Platinum Plaisir with 02 nib, Noodler's X-Feather.
Hair: Kaweco Sport EF, Manuscript Black.
Lips: Pilot Petit 3, J. Herbin Rouille d'Ancre
Eyes: barely-there wash of Lamy Turqoise

Hyousuke, my protagonist, served under Lord Fujiwara as a palace guard, and later as a soldier during the revolution that brought an end to slavery. Unfortunately, despite winning the war by killing the shogun, Hyousuke's own uncle, Fuyuki was captured by the Imperial army and executed as a rebel. In the four years since his death, he has been canonized as a saint of justice and mercy.

The youngest son of four in the Fujiwara clan, he is half fox demon, and half human. His human mother slipped through the veil between Earth and The Floating World, and was adopted into the fox clan. Born with a heart condition, he is sometimes frail and weak when overexerted.

Keeping in with my current storyline, yesterday would have been his 332nd birthday.

Day 19 of The Year of the Doodle:

Miyuki and her family are water spirits or sprites. With the ability to purify water, they were indispensable to their neighborhood when the influx of wartime refugees caused an outbreak of cholera all along the northern river, against which they live.

She works as a waitress at The Bent Willow, a small but clean restaurant owned by her parents, one of Hyousuke's haunts. If not for his drunken ways, her father might have approached Hyousuke about marrying his daughter, as he's been a great help keeping the local hoodlums out of their establishment.
