Montblanc Princesse Grace De Monaco – A Subjective Review

Good news everyone! As Professor Farnsworth would say. I can confirm my preceding theory about a long cartridge in Princesse Grace. Pelikan's long international cartridge is perfectly fit and work very well. The punched cartridge fit and no need any additional force to make it fit. I think also there is a chance to get converter which can fit into this beauty. Have two unused junk Kaigelu, and their converters shorter than the long cartridge, so maybe it can fit too, but I not yet tested that theory. Here is a picture how a Pelikan long cartridge and a Kaigelu converter relate to a Montblanc cartridge, along with my cat dirty paw. Her hair supposed to be white  The grid have 5mm pattern.

Personally still don't mind that this pen is cartridge only. I can buy a pack of five long cartridge around 1-1.1€ easily doubling the ink capacity and refill with syringe but its only me, know in some country people can't buy syringe.

Picked up the white version today...Mother's Day gift for my wife. I saw her eyeing it a few months ago when we passed through the Frankfurt Airport and made the obligatory Montblanc Boutique visit. Believe she'll be pleased. It's absolutely georgeous.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

Sadly Montblanc Stores in Frankfurt Airport relies those zone, where isn't seems accessible for inside European Union travelers, like Z zone.

This will be a really subjective review, won’t be scored, and please don’t expect full objectivity about this pen. This fountain pen is big dream come true pen for me. Dreamed about it for a long time, yet I spent a lots for other pens. But finally, we get together.

Last Tuesday a "surprise" package arrived, with a big box in it...

http://i60.tinypic.com/20ztp3b.jpg

The packing is elegant as the pen itself:

http://i58.tinypic.com/2u7n3pg.jpg

This is not the full packing! It also contains the international warranty leaflet, which contains some advertisement from the rest of the collection. The whole collection is a big WOW, really beautiful.

This pen all together is an excellent mark of pure femininity, as Grace was herself. Recently came out in ivory edition too, which also looks beautiful, but this original version with its royal purple body is absolutely catch my imagination. Knew from the first sight that I want this pen. Pen made from “precious resin”, even so this pen is heavy.

This is cartridge only, which can be a turn off many of you, considering its nearly a 1000$ pen. In the other hand, it’s compatible with international cartridges and Pelikan have a long cartridge, which barely but fits to the body of the pen. Open the possibility of lot more ink capacity. I used to syringe fill cartridges so it isn’t a problem for me. Not yet fully tired with the long cartridge, but as I started to screw in the section, it was almost completely in place without opening the cartridge. Came with a "demonstrator" cartridge and a black one, all in the body. Which one I didn't noticed in the first time. The black one was quietly hidden in the body.

The pen is beautiful, but it’s hard to capture its pure essence. In some lighting condition the body of the pen seems to be brownish more than purple, but with different lighting it’s a beautiful purple pen. The champagne colored gold and pink topaz is absolutely making this pen beautiful. Every part of this pen is about beauty. Overly feminine? Maybe, but I love it!

The cap is screw on cap, but only a few turn (two) and its off, to make the nib and section visible. The cap can have an own story, absolutely beautiful. In the pictures seems its too steep the difference between the section and the body of the pen, but it didn’t bother me at all. Feels that Montblanc made a lots of effort to make that in the right size difference to be not disturbing. It can’t post, but I never post. Again, something that aren’t bother me, still feels enough long to be comfortable for longer writing. Many says this is a small pen. Well probably, compare for a 149, but compare for a Sapporo its big enough. If you met with a Duofold International, well you know its size, because they are almost in the same uncapped length.

Still trying to find a proper case for this beauty. Montblanc have a few different one, but none of its feels right to me. This pen require something special, which I didn't found yet. Not mention the cap almost 2 cm wide...

What about the writing performance? So far tried only with Diamine Imperial Purple. My favorite ink, seems match almost perfectly match with the essence of this pen. Didn’t experienced any skipping, and feels to be a smooth writer, with its 18k medium gold nib. Although Imperial Purple dry quickly so long thoughts between writing will result an initial skip, but will catch up fast.

Not surprisingly I very much affected this pen’s beauty. Its kind of screaming for get my evening gown and wear when I use this astonishing beauty. Sadly I don't have a purple gown, so I can't perfectly match with this beauty, but probably my black one will be okay for a while... :)

Seems to have a good harmony with Filofax Flex Lizard in Blackcurrant color

A little nib comparison with Sailor Sapporo and Duofold International:

On final thoughts.. Montblanc did a great job to honor Princesse Grace, and her beauty. Would I buy this pen (assume that I not own this pen)? YES! This pen is so beautiful and so feminine, that it can't miss from my collection. Is it worth its price? Hard to answer it honestly. Its cost a lot, but you get one of the most beautiful pen. With lot of gold, topaz and mother of pearl... Will I buy the Ivory one? Don't know, have a few other pens in my wish list, and as I mentioned, I really like this one. I really love the purple color. Did I experienced any regret to spending nearly 1000$ this pen? Again, nope, I did it happily, no regret for it!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I would LOVE to own this pen. Just yesterday, I was on the website drooling over the Princess Grace pens.. ENJOY IT!!! :)

congratulations on the gorgeous pen! I wonder if you have tried the Monteverde mini converter? It fits well in smaller pens that will take a standard cartridge.

Didn't tried that. To be honest, I kind of gave up the search for converter. Long cartridge can take a good amount of ink, cheap and I can easily refill it.

Congratulations on acquiring this beautiful pen. I can certainly understand your attraction to it. I think Akkerman Simplisties Violet or Akkerman Parkpop Purper would look lovely in it. Thanks for an awesome review, Vivien.

I don't have Akkerman inks, but those two are seems similar what I have. Purple inks definitely suite this pen. My favorite is Imperial Purple, but Majestic Purple from Diamine or J. Herbin Violette Pensee looks close what you mentioned, based on some reviews.

Gorgeous pen and lovely review! I had the pleasure of playing with this one and the new white one this past week, and agree wholeheartedly that they are absolute beauties. I'm a fellow Princess Grace fan, and I agree that they have honoured her beautifully with these two pens. My friend has the white ballpoint, and while it is gorgeous, she does find that it becomes dirty easily (as any white pen would, right?) She wishes now she had picked up the purple instead :)

So happy that you love your pen so much

The more I look at this pen, the more I like it. You picked a beautiful pen, no doubt! The long cartridge is going to be very practical, as, I am sure, you'll be writing with this pen a lot!!!

Lovely purchase. I saw the white while at my local MB store and it is gorgeous.

Current Wishlist:

Visconti, Visconti, and...more Visconti! (And some ST Duponts too). (Ok fine, getting on the Omas and Montblanc trains now too. Toot toot.) (And maybe on the Montegrappa one too, but only for the Miyas.)

I have only two pearl white pen, both Parker Sonnet, although I didn't use them all the time and keeping them in soft case, its true they can pick up dirt easily, basically everything is visible on them, but with regular cleaning I didn't noticed any significant drawback of white pens. But, true. The purple one is more tolerant, still every fingerprint is easily identifiable on it. So, there is a really strong possibility that I will buy the ivory one too.

Its hard to not love this beauty, you as a fellow admirer could easily understood.

Well, I use it a lot (and admire its beauty a lot  )... Its my opinion, but I think with a long cartridge its even better than trying to find a converter which can fit in, but even so, would hold less ink. Pelikan made it well! Probably there is no more than 1-1.5 mm space between the cartridge and the body of the pen, but its working! :notworthy1: Despite I better like fine nib, its medium nib put down a nice line of ink (bit narrower than Duofold's medium). With good paper its perfect. Not mention its smooth nib. Absolutely gorgeous in every way.

very very nice pen, but it would be worth the price if it had a crown on the cap... with a diamond... and a golden sceptre as clip

Yeah, diamond... well than it would be simply extremely pricy. Considering the price of diamond...

Beautiful pen and a great review. I think if any pen were to be designed as a "feminine" pen, (designed, not just colored a particular way), the Princess Grace would show the dignity of womanhood.

Wow, what a pretty pen! It's of course too feminine for me, but I can surely appreciate the look.

About your thoughts on cartridges and converters: did you try a Montblanc converter? My Noblesse came with one and it just works well.
