Oblique Fountain Pen

Recommended Posts

I've posted this all over, so excuse me if you saw this already...

This is just a fun exercise for the "what if" crowd. I really want this pen, so I tried to make the design as realistic as possible. I'm mostly showing pics of the second version as it has an improved section fit for the feed and nib. The basic idea is to use an "Ink Pool" as a way to allow the design to curve to the left, so we have an oblique fountain pen. A converter plugs into an ebonite channel to hold it in place. The converter feed ink into the Ink Pool which feeds ink into the ebonite feed through standard capillary action. The tail end of the barrel curves to the right to counter balance the asymmetrical section. The whole FP is designed to evoke a Japanese handmade. The finish is an all American lacquer that fades from turquoise to black. The cap is slip on much like a Lamy 2000 with the little metal ring. The cap also has a slanted opening allowing ease of capping around the oblique nib - it could really only be replaced one way, so that is why it's a slip on. The nib has a flourished bird's eye design bringing the entire form back to the name, Blackbird.

Here's a pic of version 1. Note the smaller section that won't hold the feed and nib properly.

Awesome idea!

A very good idea. I looked for commercial oblique fountain pens a while ago, for copperplate, without success...

I also think your drawing skills are impressive.

The rights for this design are for sale which includes the fee of a negotiable amount and three four finished pieces. One for me, one for J.Brooks, one for Herbus and one for TeaHive for liking the idea. :D

:o I'm flattered that I'm included in negotiations!

Yeah, you, J Brooks and Herbus wanted the pen made. All I wanted to do was doodle. :lticaptd:

The first prototype is nearly finished. I used a two part epoxy that molds like clay and drys to a rock hard material for the first proto. The second will be made from alumilite. The ink system works, the barrel and section are done. The only thing left is the cap and the final finish for that turquoise to black fade. I personally don't plan on making more than twp prototypes.

would upload pics, but site says uploading not allowed

Is your storage for images on FPN full already? Mine filled up pretty quick.. haha. I upload mine to Pinterest or Facebook these days, copy the URL, and plug it into the little photo-attachment button just above the comment box here (looks like Poloroid).

That said, I've been keeping an eye on the FB post with all the photos. Looking good, sir! Quite innovative with the ink system.

If these ever get made in something like ebonite, acrylic, resin, alumilite, etc., I think an eyedropper system would make things easier.

Woot woot!! Looking gorgeous, if not a bit chunky. But I bet the width makes it comfortable in the hand. :D

Also, that's some nice handwriting you have there!

It's a bit of a hard starter, but once it starts it keeps going. As a proto though it does a good job of showing proof of concept. An oblique FP needs to be made by somebody and would probably sell well for a small maker.

With the shape of the pen I see it as a natural for pens made of antler and/or horn.

Could we see a picture of it in hand being used? Thanks

I'm still working on a high gloss finish and the cap will be a completely different design. I'm playing withe the idea that the cap is a typical hard shell as shown in the design, but I add a thin leather strap that will keep is snug.

Looking forward to seeing the new cap design! Leather might make it too snug, judging by the behavior of the leather pen loop I made recently. Sometimes it's hard to get the pen back out, if it's a tight fit. Maybe a thin, thin schmear of hot-glue on the inside edge of the cap?
