Swan Sf1 Lever Filler. Year Id

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Swan SF1 black chased pattern lever filler. It's in good nick and lucky me, the section just slipped off without any heat revealing the perished sack.

It's in good nick ie no bite marks, however the gold lever has some brassing to it.

The nib is a stub with "Mabie Todd and co NY or V? stamped into it. The cap end has 1SF Med stamped around the barrel.

Could some of you "swanners" identify the apprtoximate year it was manufactured?

I paid £20 for it at an antiques fair so not sure whether I paid over the odds or not.

Please see my not so good images.

Thanks,

Cluedoh

A nice pen with what looks to be an excellent broad Mabie Todd New York nib.

I would guess that this pen dates from about 1920; you are very fortunate to have such good chasing and also that the Black Hard Rubber is black!

To get any intact Swan for £20 is very good; to get a 90+ year-old one with a nice nib like yours in that condition is very good indeed.

Thanks Cob,

Which number sack size would fit. I understand it has to be slightly tight in the barrel.

Not strictly true, I think you are confusing this with the leverless models which do require "a sac that fills the barrel"

Almost certainly a 16. As Northlodge rightly points out, a tight fit is not necessary.

People would pay 50+ USD for a nib like that, so you had got a good deal in my opinion. Add onto that the body and cap are intact and I say a very good deal all up.
