The joy of using a fountain pen......

One day it's the crispy feel of a TWSBI Micarta or 580 nib creating a noticeable feedback. Another Day it's the springy feel of a Visconti palladium nib that lays a silky blue line on the paper, and another day it's a smooth nail on a Sheaffer snorkel that brings a smile on my face.

 

I'm just that simple :0)

The feeling of a Namiki/Pilot Falcon soft fine nib on Tomoe River Paper, and the sight of the resulting shapes in Noodlers 54th Mass. or rohrer & Klingner Verdigris...

 

 

Ironic that I have a B Falcon in action making a list and am enjoying the way the nib sails on the river of ink across the paper! I've got Noodler's too (La Couleur Royale)...

 

Everything from the smell of ink, to the noise certain nib / paper combinations make, to the way letters look with an FP - they all make my moments using them more pleasurable - like turning down the volume knob of insanity on the universe in general.

With me it's the general interaction with the pen.

Trying new inks / adjusting the nib / cleaning etc.

 

Same reason I like mechanical watches, you have that degree of interaction with them.

For me the beauty is:

 

• The satisfaction of seeing my handwriting improve (although it is still a messy scrawl some days lol)
• 'Weak ink is better than strong memory' even when that memory is a 500gb hard drive! I nearly failed an essay because my computer went down (thanks to liquid damage). Wouldn't have happened with pen and ink! The permanency is encouraging.
• Just the feel of a well honed nib gliding across the paper.
• Seeing the shock of others around you when I pull out not only my fountain pen, but my bottle of ink also.

I simply love putting down letters on paper with a good pen.

 

I love writing with my pens so much that when my new pens arrived I wrote 25+ pages in a four day span. Just complete nonsens, a line from whatever tv-show I was watching mixed in with a random thought that popped into my head, some math and some info about the pen I was holding, anything really, just to get the feeling of the nib gliding across the page.

I marvel at the creative, innovative thought to satisfy such a simple pleasure as ours.

 

*Louis Waterman's feed, that turns the flow of ink 'on" and "off", as needed, without moving parts.

*The lever-fill pen, with its functional, inexpensive, sac. Its durability, reliability, and low-cost

brought affordable fountain pens to everyone, in the twentieth century. It became a cliché.

(Anyone could steal ink from banks and post offices.)

*How am I writing with a 90-year-old Parker fountain pen ? I think Parker's brilliant accomplishments

came to head in the mid-1900's, when people, who couldn't afford the pen, bought the pen cap to

wear in the breast pocket, showing the prestigious "Arrow".

When filling the pen of dreams with favorite ink for the first time, and many times after it, the great satisfactions of dream come true writing with it...

For me I think it's seeing ink on a page and marveling at the color, especially if it's an ink I haven't used for a while. It's like discovering it all over again.

I do get the people who said it was the flushing and refilling, though -- I find that there is something kind of Zen-like, when I'm flushing out a pen, of being in the moment. Believe me: I don't get that feeling when I'm doing dishes or laundry....

Amazed how these instruments feels in my hand, like a weaponry of artistic value. Feeling like a drifter WANTING to spend time and money researching for my next fp. Having the addiction of wanting to fill the pen with a variety of inks of beautiful colors. Having the match of quality paper, so that the Nib can glide across the paper, forcing you to bring out your A game writing skills. Wow I can't wait for my next pen!

Everytime I start thinking "what the hell am I doing, spending all this time and money on archaic tools and coloured water?", I just ink up one of my demonstrators with something like Alt-Goldgrun or, my current fav, 1670 Bleu Ocean (re-form. with the sparkly bits) twirl it around in the light, watch the colours dance, then put pen to paper, feel the tactial response, let the words flow, and then realise "oh, that's why."
