But is the site a trustworthy site to purchase from? I'm rather cautious when it comes to internet shopping and if I get a bad product, returns are exceedingly difficult because it is international shipping.

As zaddick says, they are indeed very trustworthy. I placed my order for a 149 with them. They're extremely responsive and extremely helpful. This is the second time I placed an order from an unused pen seller, and I don't think it could get any better. The first one was from La Couronne du Comte, which is another Dutch company. Very similar experience with them also. Both firms actually enabled me to buy two pens that I didn't think I'd get easily. Well, the 149 would be easy to get locally but I simply refuse to buy from my local boutique and the price difference is just too big to ignore.

If I were you I would contact Joost and ask about taking a look at the pen before shipping it to you so that there won't be any need for returns.

Yes. The owner is a member here. I just bought 10 bottles of ink from them. They also ship FedEx.

I have not tried returns.

Hey Zaddick....

May I ask, what type of ink did you order from them? I assume it's either something you can't get here or something at an attractive price. Thanks in advance.

I enjoy MB 146 pens, Sailor, Pilot and Platinum pens as well. I have a strong attraction to dark red and muted green ink, colors I dislike for everything but FP ink. I also enjoy practicing my handwriting and attempting to improve it. I love the feel of quality paper under a gold nib.

He got

Pink (30ml limited)

Corn Poppy Red

Bordeaux

Green

Toffee Brown

I'm guessing the strong dollar and their (appelboom) free shipping makes it cheaper than buying from a boutique, i do know the classique solitaire from the 90th year line is 400$ cheaper from them than the online montblanc store, quite tempting.

Looks like I'm in the minority but I have both and prefer the size of the 149.

BTW, I have fairly large hands...wear either L or XL gloves depending upon the particular brand/cut.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

They are my current go to retailer for MB due to the strong US dollar. Buy with confidence.

Joost as in JoostPlattel on this site? He hasn't been on in 4 years.

Joost Appelbloom is his name. He is appelbloompen here. You can see his recent thread in the Market Watch forum.

Hi Jeff,

I bought the 5 bottles that jsolares mentioned (and I put in the recent purchases thread). The other 5 bottles are Visconti ink, which I like. It was not very environmentally friendly of me, but the inks were going to be shipped from Europe anyway. :)

I bought from Appelbloom for several reasons:

- I like to support small businesses where I can

- They use FedEx

- Free shipping

- They give volume discounts starting at 3 bottles of ink so I can save more money

- The dollar is strong right now

- They take PayPal

- They had 15% off this weekend on top of their good prices.

I end up paying less than $8 for a bottle of Visconti that is normally $17.50 in the US and more like $12 for MB 60 ML bottles which are abut $20 here. I really don't need that much ink currently, but this way I can try it easily.

I've got a 80s/early 90s 149 (split ebonite feed) and a modern 146, and I favour the 149 a whole lot more. 149s from that period has plastic threads for the piston assembly, and when compared to my 146 with a brass threaded piston assembly feels more balanced, and overall more comfortable to write. If you enjoy big pens like me, you can consider looking for a 149 with plastic piston threads!

Cheers!

Arthur

I love the way the 149 feels in the hand but I find myself writing with my 146 more. Its the size of the nib that puts me off. I have small writing and tend to hold the pen close to the nib. My hand seems so far from the paper with the 149.

Just to add to the confusion, I like both. I have one of each constantly filled with ink and use both for different reasons.

The 146 has Permanant Blue for addressing envelopes and writing checks, and the 149 for letters, notes and everything else.

Ended up ordering Montblanc Pink Ink from appelboom as well as some LAMYs as they're almost 10$ cheaper than amazon. Lets see how this package goes and then i'll get a montblanc pen from them :) haven't found a cheaper place to get one with a nib that's not medium (EF, BB, OB).

You need both. I prefer the 146 for long writing sessions. The 149 has a much more bodacious presence, and I prefer it for shorter sessions and signatures.
