M600 Vs M605

I want to add a Pelikan to my collection of fountain pens. I bought my wife an M200 more than 10 years ago, but I find it too small for my comfort. I was thinking about the M600. ArtLite, my local fountain pen store, has a blue and gold M600 for $375; a recent Fahrneys catalog has a Pelikan Marine Blue 605 for just under $300. How would the knowledgeable among you compare these two pens. They are both piston fill, but the 605 has a translucent barrel and silver accents. One thing I found strange was the statement "... with 14K silver and rhodium nib..." As far as I know, only gold is rated by karats, and silver is rated by points fine [1000 being pure silver]. What is a 14K silver-rhodium nib, and how does it compare with the 14K gold nib on the 600?

Congrats on deciding to add a Pelikan to the collection. I'm biased but I say good choice. The Marine Blue M605 has a 14C gold nib. It is rhodium plated so that it appears silver in color. I think that is where the confusion is. Silver is referring to the color of the nib and not the material that it is made from. Other than rhodium plating making it a monotone colored nib versus the two toned nib of the blue M600, there shouldn't be any difference between nibs performance wise. Of the two you mention, I personally prefer the M605 Marine Blue but, of course, that is a subjective thing.

Plus 1.

I think the catalog wording is just the unintended victim of some well-intentioned marketing language.

I have three m600s (blue/black, red/black, black, ) and three m605's (black/silver(ahem) and dark blue/rhodium and blue/black with silver trim). Oh and the m605 marine blue as well. Can't have too many of them and love them all. I hope you will enjoy yours as well.

Is there anything that would make the M600 worth 15% more, or are they equivalent or it the price of the 605 just because of a sale?

The Marine Blue has been on close out at a bunch of places which might explain why it's a bit cheaper.

Help me understand why it would be on closeout. Didn't sell well, or some other reason? I'm really new to this hobby.

The Marine Blue was a special edition, and it's on its way out, making way for other SEs. If you like the Marine Blue, get it. There will always be an opportunity to get the standard M600 style, but in a few years, the M605 Marine Blue will be tougher to come by.

For my first Pelikan, I passed up some good deals as I had my heart set on a M600 with the classic stripes. In retrospect, I shouldn't have been so picky. I'd tell you to take advantage of the closeout M605 Marine Blue if you like the looks. That's a fair price.

Go for the M605 all day, is my opinion. I am a sucker for rhodium trim though. When you want a standard M600 later, you can always get one. I just bought a red stripe M600 for $259 direct from Japan. I love the look of the 605. Good luck and let is know what you get. Either way, you won't be sorry.

I enjoy MB 146 pens, Sailor, Pilot and Platinum pens as well. I have a strong attraction to dark red and muted green ink, colors I dislike for everything but FP ink. I also enjoy practicing my handwriting and attempting to improve it. I love the feel of quality paper under a gold nib.

Agreed with the above. Pelikan's special editions come and go. Some great deals can be had on the way out. Take advantage when you can. Standard editions will be around for a good while.

I believe I paid around $450 for the Marine Blue m605, so I definitely recommend to jump on it soon if you like it. The 600 and 605 should perform the same, just a matter of which you like the look of better.

I like the size of the 600, it is considered a 'medium' or 'standard' size. I also find the 200 to be too small generally, at least unposted.

Yeah, but at least what we're pushing isn't financially destructive or addictive. Wait....what?

Took a series of photos tonight documenting my 9 months with fountain pens. Thought I'd post this one here to continue fanning the flames. :D

Do you post your 200?

I find a posted 200/400 to be very well balanced.....600 too. Posted it is larger than an unposted 800.

I post my 200/400 otherwise it's too short. The 600 I can use unposted.

m605 marine blue SE for 295 vs the striated blue for 375 is a no brainer. maybe a little, if the prices were reversed. even then I'd go with the marine demo. i prefer the green, even the red striated over the blue. but then again, i love blue, so maybe not.

Hi everyone! I have been an 800 user (4 pens) for the last six years and love the to write with the pens. Two months ago I purchased a blue striated Rhodium trim M605, EF nib, from Classic Pens. Wow! The pen posted, 153mm, and a weight of 17.5g, is balanced for me. A sheer pleasure to use. I think another 605 is in the future.
