Is It My Omas Or The Ink I Am Using?

What is the problem when you have extensive nib dribble. I don't mean nib crawl where there is a touch of ink on the nib and you wipe it off. I also do not mean when you fill the fountain pen, I mean while using it; I mean after you have put it back in pen case and you remove it again to write; there is visible ink on the nib.

I mean the tip of the nib is covered in the ink you are using. I am having this problem with my new Omas Ogiva Alba. I am including one picture to demonstrate. This picture is actually light nib dribble compared to some instances. Should I simply not use this ink in this pen? Wiping it simply smears it more and makes it worse. This same problem was previously posted regarding this ink doing similar when loaded in my Pelikan pens. Should I simply abandon this ink with my pens? I love the pen, love the ink, they just don't seem to like each other. Help! :yikes:

There's no way to tell but there are a few things to do that should help.

First if it is a piston or converter filled pen are you trying to fill it completely or after filling are you pushing out two or three drops of ink and then with nib facing up pulling the excess ink in the feed back into the body?

Have you checked to make sure there is no ink in the cap?

Are you careful when recapping to make sure you never touch the surface of the nib?

Where are you carrying the pen?

What ink are you using?

It is a piston fill. I have only filled it once since I got it days ago, Monday. I filled it by twisting the knob. Yes, I emit one or two drops after filling it. Yes, I turn it up and pull excess back into feed.

I just checked the cap to see whether there is ink in it. No, there is no ink in the cap. I am very careful recapping it. The pen is being carried in a pen roll, but I have not traveled anywhere yet with it, unless being used, it is laying down, not carried. I am using Tsutsuji. Before, when I had this problem, it was with both my Pelikans, M800 and M600 and it was with the Momiji of this same brand. (Iroshizuku brand).

I have had Pilot inks that were wonders at finding ways to stain nibs, and others that were very well behaved. Kon Peki is the best behaved one I've found from Pilot.

I'd try a different ink and see if it behaves better.

Thanks. I just flushed out the Tsutsuji ink. I have loaded it with Rohrer & Klingner "Morinda"

and will keep an eye out to see how it behaves. I am going to have to figure out something if it turns out to be the ink, I have 9 bottles of it. I love it, but it has seldom behaved in any of my pens. I may load it in the Lamy because I can't recall the reaction between pen and ink in it.

That isn't dribble. Dribble/drooling to me is ink dripping out of the nib as you write.

For "dribble," then the ink is too wet for the pen, or the nib/feed is too wet.

I have a Parker 180 that used to drip ink when I wrote. The fix was to switch to Cross/Pelikan ink. The dryer ink slowed down the ink flow enough that the pen stopped drooling ink.

When I load a piston pen or a piston converter, I drip out 3 or 4 drops, turn the pen nib up then draw the piston back to suck the excess ink in the feed back into the cylinder. If the feed is WET, I drip out 4 or more drops, rather than just 3.

Try storing the pen nib up so the excess ink drains back into the cylinder, rather than pool in the feed.

  • Change the ink
  • drip out 3 or 4 drops
  • turn pen nib up
  • draw piston back to suck excess ink in feed back into cylindern
  • if feed wet, drip out 4 more drops rather than 3
  • store pen nib up so excess ink drains back into cylinder

Think I have it. Thanks, hope it works. I have taken out other fountain pens to use my abundance of Iroshzuku inks. There must be some pen I own which can be used with it. I am awaiting an Ahab Flex,, fingers crossed. -_-

  • 2 weeks later...

I had the very same issue with my Omas. I believe its the ink because the particular ink I used does it with almost every fountain pen I use it in, not just the Omas. I was using Noodler's General Of The Armies. It doesn't stain the nib after flushing and cleaning the fountain pen but as long as it was in there the nib was inky.

Once I switched to another ink there wasn't a problem.

I have found that the combination of OMAS pens and Noodler's inks is particularly bad for nib creep. My OMAS Autunno has creep problems with every Noodler's ink I have put in it. To be fair to the pen, the Noodler's inks seem to be more prone to nib creep in a lot of my pens. I have no creep problems with any of my other inks in that pen.
