Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen

I got one with an order of noodler's bay state blue. All you really had to do was to fill the eyedropper make sure it's sealed well. Then cap it and sort of give it a couple shakes with the nib downwards (the ink flows in and fills the area with the fins). There will be some ink in the bottom of the cap as expected which you can just wipe off. I'm surprised at the smoothness that the nib has....

After the Pilot Petit1 fountain pens, US customers can now buy another disposable fountain pen from Japan, the Preppy fountain pen from Platinum.

The Platinum Preppy is made in China and is not from Japan. On the barrel is printed: "Imported by Platinum". It also not a disposable fountain pen.

THERE'S ADAPTERS FOR CARTRIDGES?!!!!?!!?!!?!!!?

Yes, there is an adapter that lets you use international cartridges with this pen (Platinum Adapter-100).

The adaptor is available from Jetpens, in the Platinum Preppy area, as is the converter.

Summary for the TL;DR crowd --

1) You can fill the Preppys five ways -

a ) You can use the Platinum cartridges

b ) You can refill the Platinum cartridges with other ink

c ) You can turn it into an eyedropper filler (read instructions previously mentioned)

d ) You can use the converter

e ) You can use the cartridge adaptor to use other brand international cartridges.

2) The Preppys are relatively easy to clean (you can pull the nib/feed assy out, and then remove the nib off that)

3) The nibs are properly tipped, and come in Medium (0.5mm) and Fine (0.3mm). They are reasonably smooth. They should be adjusted if you are going to use any of the Noodler's inks so that there is a tiny gap all the way to the end of the tines.

4) The caps crack. Hold them together with a couple of wrappings of cellotape.

5) The caps have one of the best-sealing inner caps on the market. That's why Platinum used that mechanism for the Plaisir pens.

6) The section is medium-thick, and averages about 10.5mm, compared to a Parker 51 and a Lamy 2000 at about 10mm. They are very light, even when fully loaded as an eyedropper filler. In large hands, they are best used posted.

7) Don't use Diamine's Registrar's ink unless you are going to use the pen every day, and clean it out thoroughly every week. Although, my one that is filled with Sailor Kiwaguro Nano Black is behaving flawlessly, even when neglected.

I have about 8, and mainly use them as experimental pens, with new inks or blends I'm not too sure about. When I am confident about the ink, and like it, then it migrates up to a 'good' pen.

Talk about smooth-writing, tough little pens . . . I'm now into my 2nd year of continuously running Parker Superchrome turquoise ink (a wonderful color) in a Preppy fitted with an adapter and an international-size cart I've been refilling. Despite that ink's well-deserved reputation as a pen-destroyer--I speak from 1st-hand experience--it's had no noticeable effect thus far on the Preppy. I should add that despite my Preppy's ability to handle Superchrome unscathed, there's no way this ink touches any other of my pens. IMO the Preppy ranks with the piston-fill Dollar as a great fp bargain for the price.

  • 1 year later...

I got a few of these after using the Noodler's Year of the pig free pen. I do agree that they yellow ink that comes with the Platinum preppy is pretty awful but the other cartridges are nice.

So I got some more and removed the cartridges and put o rings on them all and without any silicon grease, used them as eye dropper pens for all my new bottles of Noodlers, so now I have a dedicated preppy for each ink color. I bought some glass eyedroppers from the drug store. I haven't had a leak yet and put a fair bit of pressure on the O rings. I labelled each pen with a writing sample on a small piece of paper taped to the barrel, roughly matching the pen color to the ink color - the red I used for Nakita red and Waterman Red, The Black for HOD, etc. So far I'm quite pleased with the performance, especially considering the price. It gives me a 'standard' pen to compare various inks. I like finer nibs, so this is a good pen choice. I may try my hand at grinding a nib or two - at this price, I can learn without too high a penalty for failure.

I got the o rings at OSH hardware item #0533. It is pictured next to a disassembled pen. The ring is bigger than the rings that come from noodlers and you CAN feel them (I don't find it particularly annoying. I noticed that I'm missing my Hunter green one <img src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Hope it didn't make it to the laundry. That might be a bad test.

So far no leaks carrying it in my shirt pocket, etc. I'm lpleased so far.

Pardon the high resolution but when I scaled it back the handwriting samples (taped to the barrel) were just too degraded to see well.

Those pens without gaskets have the preppy refil installed. In instances of duplicate colors, one tip is the pen tip and the other is the highlighter felt tip. The very last pen has brown preppy ink with a marker felt tip ending as oppossed to a highlighter ending. Note in particular the two Year of the pig Yellow highli8ghter pens and notice the thin gasket which is supplied with the year of the pig pen as compared to the thicker gasket I'm using. I have not had a problem with either gasket., although you can put more pressure on the thicker gasket before it distorts, possibly causing some of the leakages previously mentioned (speculative). Also I've installed these gaskets in a number of my fountain pens (Waterman and Schaeffer) as extra protection against leaks with no interference with the caps fitting securely.

Old thread, but I just have to say I´ve been using my preppy FP for lots of months now, and I love it. Got it as a gift, and it writes great and holds tons of ink (it´s converted to an eye dropper). Just had to give another thumbs up for this pen!

I'm of the same opinion as whitelilly re preppy...Incidentally Sheaffer NoNonsense fountain pens

make excellent eye-dropper filler...

Fred, I just noticed that in your pic here you actually have a clear NNS! I am contemplating getting one (but it is slightly discolored), do you remember where you got yours? Also, was the ED conversion difficult on the NNS? Any problems such as leakage or "blurping" when at all or when the ink is running low? stuff like that?

Does anyone know if the .05 nib size for the Platinum Preppy has been discontinued? I can't seem to find it anywhere any more.

I got several of them for grinding practice last week from Jet Pens. The .05 size.

Hurray! Jetpens and Goulet Pens have both been out for the longest time. Thanks for the heads up! Glad to see they're back.
