The Deccan Majaz – A New Deccan Fp Model, The First In 2015

It was just a routine visit to Deccan Pens at Abids … whenever Hari comes to Hyderabad, we set out in the evening ... it is a long drive from where I live to Abids and that gives us enough time to catch up on events and happenings in the pen and watch worlds on FPN and elsewhere … we meet up with Wasim bhai, and the younger generation brothers and the sales people … and if Wasim bhai is free, the conversation can go on for a long long time … sometimes no pen is bought, but the visit to Deccan at Abids is part of our liking and passion for pens … it is like paying obeisance at the altar of superior pen-making …

Yesterday, 19th February 2015, Hari and I visited Deccan and both of us were happy to see a new model under the glass … it is a shiny black ebonite number, suitably restrained with only the bright golden coloured clip for any visible embellishment … a classic cigar shaped fountain pen, it is an ED filler … the size is slightly smaller than the MB 146 … the flat clip is nice and quite springy, but not spring loaded … except for the dome at the cap jewel, the cap is cylindrical and forms a straight line and cuts smoothly at the cap lip and embraces the barrel gracefully when the pen is capped …

Once the cap is unscrewed, you see the trademark Deccan lines and meticulous finishing … the section is so elegant and the lines form a beautiful and subtle hourglass, just about straightening out ever so slightly at both ends at the last millimeter … look at the place in the section where the nib & feeder meet the section and it is so shiny … this attention to detail is rarely seen … and that is what keeps Deccan at the top among Indian fountain pen makers …

The pen came with a regular nib, but I didn’t like the shape and got it changed for a custom Deccan Medium nib … I had to pay extra for that, of course … and after the pen was inked, it just took off … Hari, who was overseeing the change of nibs, tested the smoothness and flow and said, ‘what need for any other pen …?’ I want to call it the Deccan Majaz …

Here are some photos of the pen …

It reminds me of the pictures I've seen of the Bullet. And of the Bullet Jr I have in my pen box.

Nice pen but a bit 'ordinary' and resembles Gamas and Ratnams. Deccan has a USP in their flat tops and the coarse finish pens and this to me is a bit underwhelming...

That's a good looking pen :) I like the understated, streamlined, elegant look it has. It reminds me of the old American car designs of the thirties and forties- streamlined, understated (compared to their fifties bretheren), restrained, yet beautiful, elegant, flashy enough to warrant a second look and comely :)

Here to help when I know, learn when I don't, and pass on the information to anyone I can :)

Dear mhguda, Vaibhav, Deepak, thatotherguy1, and Hari ...

Thank you all so much for visiting this post, reading it, and for your responses ...

mhguda, I am glad that you have the Bullet...I believe the Bullet is slightly shorter than this pen...

Vaibhav, yes, it does have the vintage look ... that old style black and gold combination ...

Deepak, Deccan's staple pens are the Advocate, which is flat top and bottom, and the Masterpiece, which is cigar shaped ... Advocate always had a shiny finish, and the Masterpiece comes in both shiny and brushed finishes ... the Majaz, here, can be considered a smaller version of the Masterpiece ... I would call the pen 'stramlined and restrained', as thatotherguy1 put it so elegantly...

thatotherguy1, you have captured the spirit of the pen admirably in your words...couldn't have said it better...thanks

Hari, have you unpacked your pens yet? It was an enjoyable evening...good pens, engaging conversation, and good food ... great ... so, when are you posting your version?

Regards to all ...

I love my Adv and Adv jr and one of these will always be in use. The dimensions and the hourglass section set apart the Deccan lineage. Even the steel cap models are clearly identifiable as Deccans. My first thought on seeing this pen was 'its a Gama'...

Am sure it would be a great writer like all Deccans...But...

Shrujaya,

I don't have a Bullet sr yet - I have been waiting for the one I ordered some time ago but have not been invoiced for yet - their availability seems lacking? but I do have a Bullet jr. I like its shape and the hourglass grip section, and also the brushed finish. The one issue I have with this pen is that when posting, the cap is slowly marking a ring on the barrel - and to be comfortable writing, I find I need to post it. So I don't use it as often as I might... I was hoping the senior would remedy that.

And, did I say I love Deccan's nibs?

I finally found some time today to take pictures of the Majaz.

The Majaz haul from Deccan:

Two variants: Smooth and Brushed:

With the stock friction fit Ritter nib:

Compared to the Bullet:

The Bullet itself has undergone slight changes from 2008 to 2013.

I did some modfications to the Majaz to fit Schmidt nib units:

With Small Schmidt nib units:

The pen on the right has a larger Schmidt nib unit:

To me, it's especially handsome with the larger Schmidt nib. Congratulations, nice pens!

Thanks Hari for documenting your haul of Majazes ... for showcasing both variants - the smooth and the brushed; for contrasting the Majaz with the earlier Bullets; and for re-engineering the Majaz with the Schmidt nib ... the Majaz looks even more tempting now ... I had already put in the Deccan nib at extra cost, otherwise I would have asked you to fit in a Schmidt nib for my Majaz too ... as mhguda points out, the pen looks more 'handsome' with this change ... and thanks for making this post all the more richer and fuller ...

I also did not know. Without taking accurate measurements, it is difficult to say if a nib unit can be retrofitted into an already existing pen and if you remember, I had borrowed a scale from them to get some rough measurements. Once I came back here, I could determine that only the two Schmidts would just about fit nicely. Just send me your Majaz and I will install the Schmidt unit in it for you.

I particularly love the very gentle concave curve of the section. Altogether a lovely pen.

I'm wondering if by the application of tape during polishing, one could create a brushed/poliished pinstripe? That would really suit the pen.... (yes, it would cost. Maybe I should just get a pen and try out that idea myself....) Must say I prefer it in the polished variant which emphasises its lovely curved form.

Too many pens, too little time!

Thanks for reading. I agree reg the masking tape and I also prefer the smooth version. This is the first time that I and Shrujaya had seen this type of pen offered by Deccan in a smooth finish, and we were quite excited.

  • 3 weeks later...

With some modifications to the cap in order to increase the space within it, I was able to modify the Majaz to accept the Pelikan nib units. :)
