Japanese Brush Pens, $5

Jared

Recommended Posts

Many of you are familiar with the Sailor Profit brush pen, which sells for about $30 or more. Brush pens are very common here in Japan, and here's a chance for you to try one (or more) for considerably less. These are great for drawing, shading, bold writing, etc. The Japanese characters are my attempt at some bad kanji.

Platinum brand, cartridge fed (brush pen cartridge has black ink and a little ball-bearing at the top). Brush is white, but turns black from capillary action with ink from the cartridge.

Brush pen is $5, shipped to US addresses. To an international address, $7. I also have packs of 3 Platinum Carbon Black cartridges available for $3.50. Paypal is preferred, but contact me for payment details.

I have more of my unique Soup & Pen special, described here for $5. I also have packs of 5 Sailor fountain pen ink cartridges in blue or black for $3, each, as pictured below with a Sailor pen.

I have plenty of all advertised above, so please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,

Jared

Are these somewhat like the "Flair " pens of the 70's ?

I have no idea, I was just a kid then. laugh.gif

They are like a "soft" felt tip pen. biggrin.gif

I went and checked and I can get packets of three ink cartridges also, and although I can't read the kanji (or write it for that matter), I trust Taki that it's Platinum Carbon Black.

Yay! I learned another way to say "today!" eureka.gif

Anyway, I've had one of those brush pens (not this one) with the felt tips. I didn't quite like it. If this had the real bristles like one I reviewed a while ago, I'd pounce on it. Oh, and I think the "kaaboninku" in katakana is a good hint that it's Carbon Black.

Jared, great of you to make these Japanese pens available to us.

Question: are the tips on these pens kind of a spongy material? I tried something called a Memory Brush Pen a while back and it had one such tip on it. Can't say I liked it much but then again the ink in it may have been past its "best before" date.

I don't know about spongy, but maybe a little. It reminds me of a felt tip, but soft/flexible. The tip comes white and uninked, so if you really wanted, you could use your own ink in a converter (which I don't have) or refilled cartridge instead of the provided Platinum Black Carbon cartridge, but I'm not so sure you could wash it out and change colors.

Hmmm, sounds different than the thing I've got. Further use of this pesky creature has little bits of foam breaking away from the "nib" while I'm using it. I know I'm a bit ham-fisted but this is silly! Maybe the "memory" brand name is a harsh joke: use it for a little while and all you have is a memory of the pen you paid for. Yuck.

I'm not sure which brand you are referring to--Memory? Never heard of it. Sounds troublesome.

The Platinum works fine for me, but I write lightly with it--like a brush. B)

Yup, "Memory". Came in a presentation box with a slug of refill cartridges (black and sepia).

I think it's some Chinese brand that somehow made it's way into the Japanese market. The writing on the pen itself is Chinese (I think) but the labeling on the refills is Japanese. Also it's got tacky rhinestones embedded in the tips of the cap and body, something I've seen on a variety of Chinese cheapies.

Each refill replaces the foamy "brush" tip so it's not a tragedy when the little foamy bits start breaking off. Kinda off-putting though.

Suffice it to say that the Platinums sound a lot more promising.
