Beauty or lack thereof, is in the eye of the beholder.

A couple years ago I had a contest here to PIF one like above. A Jr or High school teacher won it.

She reported that her students homed right in on it and they thought it was "cool".

I don't think this one will win any beauty contests.

By now I am one of the many, but as soon as I saw this I thought it must take the prize! Somehow seems worse than the black one.

Of my own pens the Al-Star wins. It is a brilliant pen and has many clever functional design features but, to me, it is so ugly. The squared-off ends and paper-clip clip are what really do it. It is the only pen I have which is unused for aesthetic reasons - but then some say I am no oil painting!

Wow, that Rotring Core is the ugliest pen ever (to my eye)!!! I can understand how teens might be impressed with it though, which can only be a good thing! And the world would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

As an ardent wine taster, I couldn't resist splashing out on this horror. It must weigh what any three other very heavy pens weigh, but loaded up with (Noodler's Purple Martin, or for the appropriate tasting, Private Reserve Burgundy Mist) it is fun to use. You'd never carry it in a pocket unless you didn't mind the pocket being ripped off!

I see it still available for $36 should anyone want one.

That's $36.00 they pay you if you want one, right?

It also looks very painful to write with.

Wait, you just gave me the perfect gift for my boss.

Yeah, it would make a good joke gift. The nib is actually pretty decent, a German steel nib. Had I know about the weight of it, I'd not have bothered, although if I am doing a wine tasting at home (where I don't need to carry this dreadnought) one can write with it without undue strain.

Needless to say, this is one of the few pens I own that one would NOT post!

I know someone who has the "snake" version of that pen. Thing weighs a ton. I said "What possessed you?" and got told, "Uh, seemed like a good idea at the time...."

Much of this thread is proving that ugly, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Please meet "Rocky" a gneiss pen that accompanied my eBay prize of a Sheaffer 100 Winter Friends Plum Blossom pen. Rocky weighs in at 44g and is a hard starter.

It is quite funny every one is mentioning the Core. When they first came out I was in year 5 and probably 10 years old I really wanted one because I thought they looked really cool but my parents shared the same opinion as you guys and they thought £20 for a pen was too much, alas how things have changed...

Even to this day 11 latter I still think the pen looks fairly cool and personally don't think it's ugly it's just simply aiming at a different section of society rather then your typical Parker 51 and Mont Blanc wielding fountain pen elitists. If I saw one at a good price I'd still pick one up.

Yeah, but I bet people at least say "Hey, that's a gneiss pen you have there......" ;)

I take it for granite.

Hey, your response rocks! Bit on the sedimental side though.

Of quartz, if this goes on much longer I might lose my marble.
