Five Pointed Star

Recommended Posts

we were looking through our stuff the other day memoribilia from our life in Saudi Arabia at the time we were selling vast amounts of technology to the Saudis and some very high price contracts were signed.

At one of these signings with the Ambassador and Crown Prince I was given one of the pens used for sgning the contract - having put most of it together.

The pen was a Meisterstucker No.149 one of the top writing instruments.... generally noted with a six pointed star on the cap.

We noted at the time that these pens had caps with five pointed stars. The reasons being given that the six pointed star could be seen as the Star of David - viz Israel or enemy occupied Palestine- and therefore forbidden.

This was many years ago (25 ish) and I hadn't given the pen much thought till I was sorting out my draw.

I went on line tofind out more but thegeneral concensus was that it was a fake!!

I thought that can't be true as they wouldnt have had the Crown Prince signing with a "fake" pen.

I contacted Montblanc in the UKwho wanted photos etc. and eventually they wanted me to send the pen, so that they could send it to Germany for verification.

I got the pen back the other day together with a nice letter confirming the authenticity of the pen and they said in there letter.

""The pen [your Meisterstucker No 149] was one that was produced purely for our Arab markets--Yes- it is correct that the pen was addapted specifically for this market as the six pointed star was not permitted at the time.

It does make your fountain pen quite exclusive and exceedingly rare and a valuable item due to this limitation.""

The point is now what do I do with this beautiful fountain pen?

it is sitting in it's box together with the letter of authenticity and a photo of the Crown Prince signing the contract with it.

Any ideas what t do with it? ??

Maurice

If it were mine then I would, ahem, write with it?

I don't do much writing these days due to shaking hands etc. [75 years old now]

I was wondering if there was any place I could sell it. Or shall I just leave it to my son...LOL

Welcome to FPN.

What a splendid story.

Yes, you could sell it on this forum - once you fulfil the criteria (minimum number of posts etc) - or, of course, leave it to your son and keep it in the family.

But, before you sell it, I'd wait and see what other members think of it. It could be a valuable pen, owing to its rarity - and they may be able to guide you in terms of price.

If you're familiar with ebay (popular auction site), that could also be a potential marketplace. It's got mixed admirers/haters, but usually tends to attract a correct market price for the genuine items.

Good luck.

Great story Maurice. Pictures would be nice as I am curious. Are there many scratches on the barrel of the 149 after so many years in the drawer?

Despite what they said, don't expect it to carry much if any premium. The modified stars are not all that rare.

Value can be quite subjective. As long as the pen is in good condition I would expect it to have a premium over a pen of similar vintage and condition from the curiosity of the 5 pointed star and the fact that you have written authentication from Montblanc. How much of a premium depends on the buyer. The fact that it was used for a particular contract signing might be of interest/value to parties involved. Perhaps you could contact the company if they may be interested in the item for their archives?

If you are going to "look" at it, I recommend taking 100, quality, digital photographs, depicting every feature.

Sell the pen, and look at the beautiful pictures. Share them with FPN and family. That is what a "static

display" item is worth. Otherwise, get a bottle of Montblanc Royal Blue and enjoy a rare taste of royalty.

(You won't break a 149.)

<start opinion mode>

Regardless of it's providence, a 149 is a great pen and should (at least to me) be used for writing rather then spending life in a desk drawer...at least in my humble opinion.

<end opinion mode>

You obviously know your son best, but for whatever it's worth, I would leave your 149 to your son if he is the least bit interested in pens/writing and/or having a small memento from you that he can easily keep with him. If he's not interested in keeping/using this pen, I would sell it (either on FPN or on eBay) and then give him the money to buy something to remember you by.

Hope this helps!
