I have access to a 3D printer. Is there a template/pattern file for a pellet cup available for use from someone in the FPN family?

Brian - would it be an imposition to PM that to me as well?

Thanks in advance.

Same for me too please. Thank you.

Now that everyone has there pm's, may we please see what the pellet cup looks like. Is it working well ? or do we still continue to use parker pellet cups that are still in pristine shape. January 2016 so far 4 bad pellet cups, bad. However 8 good pellet cups, I have four pellet cups if someone needs a replacement.

Cheers

Those are some cups I got.

Well done then,

NB: Do we just continue to support the supplier we have presently, or shall we contact someone with those cups, For Sure I would buy those cups.

Those look great

Cheers

Just to clarify the cups I posted an image of were turned on a lathe not 3D printed.

That whole pellet cup scenario sound like a lot of fussing and work. I have been making and selling exact reproductions in black ebonite for several years and for 3.00 USD and .60 shipping you can buy them. The shipping cost remains the same no matter how many that you buy.

And then again stripping out a ballpoint might be fun!

Like FarmBoy, we've been making (and selling) delrin replacement sockets for a few years now. Delrin is our choice for a couple of reasons.

First, it's got excellent working characteristics. It's strong, but flexible, and easy to machine. I've actually had to remove a pellet from one (a gooified diaphragm), and it is much, much more resilient than the original material, or ebonite (hard rubber).

Second, it's easy to come by. And you don't have to waste an entire pen's worth of plastic just to use a tiny portion (of a Papermate ballpoint).

As far as bonding goes, we suggest a drop of crazy glue. And in around five years, and approximately 500 sockets, we've not had one complaint. About adhesion, or anything else. Proof is in the pudding.

Well well well...

I'm sure glad of this. That ballpoint pen scenario is deplorable

Thank you for the pellets, that is a perfect fit on any prepped plunger.

You can have the biro scenario, Im sticking with the repro pellet cups.

Hello everyone,

While researching this topic I stumbled across this blog. I have a 3D printer and several Vac's among hundreds of various Fountain pens in my collection. I am in need of a pellet cup and would like to attempt printing one myself if I could please get the file(s) (stl, gcode, etc) and any other information/settings, I would greatly appreciate it. I currently have PLA & PLA+ filament, will either of those work?

Thanks in advance,

Brent

I have printed pellet cups. The resolution on the printer I have access to is not very fine so the cup is not smooth. I worry about an edge wearing into the diaphragm. The few I have in test have had no problems but its only been two or three months. Next step is to try smoothing a printed cup with a quick acetone/mek bath or vapor bath to see if that takes care of the edges.

I've also been mulling over another solution. A guy I know uses what essentially is a small screw machine to turn out hubs, gears, and other small parts for HO slot cars (each run of a part is several hundred to no more than 1000). Those parts are very similar in size to a pellet cup.Should be able to tool up for pellet cups and maybe estie jewels, just not sure if the effort and cost to get it going would be worth it (for him it would be a business proposition, not a passion). This must have been contemplated before by others here?

Hello !

Sorry for digging out such an old post but I need to repair the pellet cup on a 1946 p51.

Could you send me those 3D printed plans if you still have them please ?

Ty so much !

It may be fun to print out a new pellet cup, but it may be more precise and cost effective to purchase a replacement cup. There are at least a thousand available. You may consider purchase several since postage will be the same.

I'm looking at several options.
I think you're absolutely right but the replacement cups are quite hard to find here in Europe (I'm based in France) and shipping costs are too much compared to the replacements cup by themselves even-though I think about buying a few to have some in advance for future restorations.
I found some on eBay from India but there are several weeks to wait before I receive them.
I'd like to have an option where I can provide myself with the solution if needed and I'm more competent with a 3D printed than with a lathe 😅

Michael - pm sent.

Pellet cups printed with current printer technology are pretty nice. I print them in colors other than black to make them easily distinguishable from original or from the various available turned ones.

Read the pm, again thank you so much !
as long as they do the job it should be a thrill for everyone !

I need to find someone who can print them for me or get myself a decent affordable printer quickly ! 😅
