it looks like micarta than bakelite...

The store sells Industrial supplies like black ebonite, this item sold as bakelite, nylon, teflon etc. This item is mainly used for making insulating handles etc-apparently it is layers of cambric rolled on with a yellow resin. It gives off a lot of yellow powder when machining and a typical smell. new to the name micarta, I have made two more pens with this as shown below, - in which I have given a souble CA coat to add lusture. There is one more variety which is mustard colour. The material has good mechanical strength in thin walled tube section and good machinability at medium speed- in fact I have dispensed with the internal brass tubing in all these pens.

Micarta is a brand name for composites of linen, canvas, paper, fiberglass, carbon fiber or other fabric in a thermosetting plastic.

as I understand bakelite is one the earliest known plastics...

Micarta early composite insulating plate that used Bakelite as a binding agent, trademarked 1912 by Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg Co.

well that answers it...

Thanks very much for the information. Sold as bakelite locally this material has fabric insert-must be some kind of micarta .
