The great variety of printed Scrapbooking paper is one ready source of material to wrap your journal covers.

There is a way of using these papers that will result in zero wastage.

To achieve zero wastage, you need two sheets of these papers usually in 12" x 12" dimensions.

Two of such sheets can yield exactly 3 journals of increasing size like this :

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/28367-homemade-journal/page-27?do=findComment&comment=1529187

There's A5 the largest , and A6 and A7 which is around credit card size.

Here is another technique but unfortunately, there is some wastage.

The difference here is that I am using only one sheet of 12" x 12" to make one A6 journal , but this time, you can use the same paper to craft the pocket , making the pocket co-ordinated .

Here you see the A6 covers laid on the paper which is 12' x 12".

( there's significant leftover.

maybe , one can even make another A7 size journal , haven't tried it yet , but it looks possible.)

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/205%20Woodland/002_zpshwvjiy7l.jpg

The narrow strip on the rightside can easily be turned into a bookmark.

The leftovers at the top is what I now use to incorporate into the pocket.

Trimming down to pocket width

There isnt enough material lengthwise to make a pocket, so I have to join two pieces together.

done, the required length to make a pocket.

The joint is noticeable but only barely.

This seam, is located on the inside of the finished pocket - hidden away from view.

Completed ...

( a small detour away from completing the FPD2015 journals )

JOURNAL 205 "Woodland" in A6 size

A 'quick' journal using one sheet of 12" x 12" scrapbooking sheet of paper

I like the motif, and I immediately recall some journals with a corner accent ...

So I did the same , introduced a red corner accent.

I Know ...

the red ought to be a blood red - not a bright red ...

but I didn't have dark red bookcloth , so I had to make do with this ...

Covers completed ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/205%20Woodland/014_zpseqia5bpr.jpg

A dash of colour on the corner ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/205%20Woodland/002_zps4pxplvne.jpg

I liked the plain motif of the print and wanted to keep that,

so I decided to use white threads to fade into the background

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/205%20Woodland/007_zpsfq7yoic6.jpg

The corner accent is made of bookcloth - and

is flushed same level as the book cover

a detail which I much prefer and don't want to abandon :)

This is JOURNAL 204G FPD2015 GEMATEX Olive Green

A6 size

My 48th TR journal

This is a complementary colour scheme , earth tones ...

Greens and browns ...

I was pleasantly surpirised that the brown flyleaves could show up the logo and the writeup quite nicely.

I was expecting the print to come out murky and hard to see ...

One of the advantages of such an exposed stitching is that it can be folded over.

There is no material on the spine to resist the folding over.

Sometimes sketchers do this especially when they are doing quick sketches on the go , like for eg, when travelling ...

You can hold it comfortably in one hand , and even use the elastic band to hold down the pages from flapping in the wind...

Finally,

this is the 2nd attempt, and its betta. :)

Since glueing was a challenge, I decided to use two kinds of glue in the process of embossing/ debossing the covers.

This cover design is complicated becos the black print logo is debossed.

Its in a recess.

It means having to position the logo exactly over the recess.

just like an emboss, to form the recess, you also need a card underlay to form that recess.

The card is glued onto the wrong side of the logo to form both the emboss and deboss.

The real challenge comes when you need to glue the prepared cover material onto the coverboard.

anyway, after mulling over this for a long time,

I used dry glue (like a glue stick), to mount the card underlay to the cover material.

Wet pVA glue was brushed over those areas where there is either debossing or embossing involved - to get wet glue into those tiny corners , edges.

A good emboss / deboss is where you see their edges very well formed, ie the material wraps itself tightly over the emboss / deboss.

The cover material must be pliable enough to be able to wrap around the shapes formed underneath.

And the edges and corners need to be covered in glue to help achieve this.

This earlier pic shows the emboss created on the backside of the cover material instead of usually on the surface of the coverboard to be covered.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/204%20FPD2015/004_zps0uj4vfxh.jpg

After this stage above, comes the part where you glue on the card underlay that forms the deboss on the logo. (Sorry - no pic - too busy concentrating on the execution)

And after that, comes the final stage of mounting the entire thing onto the coverboard.

This is a difficult journal cover to make.

I havent come up with a foolproof technique to execute this yet.

Anyway,

Its a special journal becos it belongs in my white series of journals.

All white accents

white stitches, white flyleaves / white ribbon / white band

so as to allow the logo to pop.

i was telling the Owner, I cant figure out why the stitching on this journal came out unusually nice .

I am suspecting the premium quality thread from Italy is the reason.

Its a thread that has a lot of strands - much more than the coloured threads i have of same size - 0.8mm.

Wow, that is a sweet looking book! Sadly I have such crappy writing, that I rely on either college rule, or dot graph to keep my mostly poor penmanship charted somewhat level on the pages. I used to use Clairefontaine a5 ruled journals, but as I began using Waterman Absolute Brown and Noodlers Zhivago ink as my primary inks, I switched to an unknown medium journal book made by Markers.

The only place I have seen them is in Borders books & in Walmart. I was spending upwards of $16.00 a book for the Clairefontaine journals, but these "no name" journals are very nice. They are made with acid-free white paper, and very fountain pen friendly plus cost under $6 for a book with 250 pages, which has been a giant relief to my wallet!

When the eraser fountain pen is invented, I will be the first author to have written his book using a fountain pen!

TM, the bands are very nice, but rest assured, even without dedicated journal-elastic bands, your journals are very polished.

And beautiful. An absolute delight not only to write in but to show off or look at. When not using one I look forward the whole time to when I can start using my next TMLee. :D
