120gm/m2, 25x38 inch sheets folded and cut to book block dimensions of 6 1/4" x 9 1/2"

 

I don't know the size convention that would apply. Smaller than A4 larger than A5.

 

Book cloth was made from red fabric with marble paper pattern backed with lightweight unbleached mulberry using methyl cellulose.

I tweaked the proportions of the motif ...

 

reverted to the original narrow width (at the blue dot)

 

fattened the part at the spine (at the orange dot) and also removed the notch there

As a relative newbie here, I feel almost ill equipped to pass comment on this awesome work; however, as you are asking for responses, I feel that version 4 works better than version 3.

 

Just as a matter of interest, how many man-hours does it take you from start to finish on one of you notebooks.

I think this was asked sometime ago.

IIRC, I mentioned a cumulative time of about 4hrs on a small A6 journal.

That was not counting the separate times for clamping overnight and Glue-drying.

 

Those journals were 4 station designs. Less complicated.

 

Now I offer TR paper and these require 6 station designs.

Not only more stations, but stitching with TR paper takes up more time. Handling them requires more care.

 

Emboss / deboss designs on the covers , like above, also take up additional time.

The emboss-deboss really stands out in the pictures with the light cloth, and it is visually very interesting.

However I also sometimes like a more subtle design, so that you would have to do a double-take to appreciate it... if that makes sense?

This is a dark coloured bookcloth - Warm Grey.

There appears to be a sheen when seen at some angles.

I believe its due to the particular shade of grey , allowing the reflections of the emboss to catch and reflect light.

Light coloured bookcloths do the same but you cant see the reflections cos they are light coloured.

Very nice.

In designing these , I have to constantly remind myself to imagine the stitches that will take its place on the covers.

Both in terms of colour and form.

When they finally get installed, they will play its part in the overall aesthetics.

 

Version 4 looks promising at the moment.

 

But my gut feel is that Version 1 may just win in terms of elegant simplicity.

 

I can't wait to see the final product (ie, with the stitches in place )

 

I have prepared 4 bookblocks - all in TR paper.

and they are awaiting piercing before stitching.

 

They will also be put up for sale , so if anyone is interested, just message me.

Funny that you should ask Obi-Wan.

 

I am making great progress, however I have not even started making 'the box' yet. How can that be progress you might ask. Well my wood working skills are not what they once were and I have essentially no equipment worthy of the box project, or so it was this spring. I have acquired a n old table saw which needed considerable refurbishing, I picked up a cheap bench top belt/disc sander and just this past weekend I acquired a vintage but almost new looking wood planer. so production is starting to pick up.

 

I am working on two projects to help me get my 'swing' back so to speak. A 'practice boxc' and a desk top pen and journal storage block. I just began the finishing (as in staining) the desk top 'pen block' last night. I should have that all done within three days. When I do I will debut it so you can see how my design and technique are coming along. Just know that right now, my skills are at much more amateur level than yours.
