Somehow, the journal shown above has ended up in Northern Minnesota and has found a happy home. Lo and behold, a few pens might be a perfect match to its accents. :)

Top to bottom are Bexley 10th Anniversary LE in lemon acrylic, Sailor Naginata Togi Ribbed in canary, and ParkerDuofold Junior in Mandarin

It is not always easy to see the subtleties in photos, but if you've never had one of TMLee's journals in your hand you are missing some of the most exquisite workmanship imaginable.

Moderator note: At the request of DrCodfish, I split the posts concerning the very gorgeous glacier journal (and the project of making a box for it and pens) into a separate topic. That to keep comments on that project from hijacking this wonderful thread.

Carry on ladies and gentlemen.

a very hardy material , can withstand alot of abuse, impervious to moisture, can be wiped clean.

Practically treated canvas.

Blue stitches were preferred over other options in keeping with a 'cool' theme.

This is a six-station stitch which is necessary for my journals carrying TR paper.

I usually revisit my past designs , looking to see how it can be improved or if there can be a variant out of that design.

the ideas are usually recorded graphically

becos sometimes seeing the images leads on to other ideas.

in other words , recording developmental ideas.

One of the benefits of such a process is that you can backtrack a few steps and explore an alternative at that particular point.

This is especially helpful , when you conclude a design but somehow feel its unsatisfactory , and you have a little problem putting your finger on what needs to be corrected.

Next was the emboss variant ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2014/186%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/186A%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green%20-%20Spine%20Emboss/006_zpsd6e7db40.jpg

both emboss and deboss side by side ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2014/186%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/186A%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green%20-%20Spine%20Emboss/011_zpsd19531c4.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2014/186%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/186A%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green%20-%20Spine%20Emboss/013_zps02dc01fa.jpg

which do you guys like better ?

the emboss (on the left) or the deboss (on the right) ?

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2014/186%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/186A%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green%20-%20Spine%20Emboss/012_zpscdbe4981.jpg

I cant decide ...

the design intent was a six station stitch design so the stitches will fall in place on the lower surface of the emboss design

However, the stitches will sit on the raised part of the deboss design - which I dont quite like becos the thread will not be protected from abrasions.

But it is the deboss effect which I like.

Somehow it looks more 'right' being a deboss.

might be useful to hear some of your thots ... :)

I like them both-used on the same journal it would look like the emboss stamped and made the deboss.

Personally, after looking at the picture for a while, I keep finding my eye drawn to the embossed side. I find it more pleasing to my eye, more balanced.

I like the idea of using them both. I'll often omit details such as document envelope and elastic which helps orient the front and back of the journal. In this example is that the front or back of the journal? You have remove the journal from the clam shell and open the book to know where the front/back is. Sometime I'll change the color of the thread at one of the stations to help orient the book to distinguish the front from the back.

Your design process is admirable. Thanks for sharing so generously.

Thanks ,

yes that option did occur to me.

it was attempted on one of my earlier designs , also emboss and deboss technique.

not sure how to describe this ...

But i feel the symmetry is so strong on this motif (along the spine), that to present otherwise is kind of going against the grain. :)

Now with their corresponding covers ,

perhaps easier to visualize ...

BTW

this is a six-station design.

but unlike previous ones, this one will have the stitches slanted the other direction .

Will have to complete the stitching to see the full effect more accurately.

YAY ! :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

I found a solution ...

This led me to the solution of having a deboss whilst at the same time having stitches on a lower surface.

The solution was simple - add one more shoulder into the patterns ...

Why didnt I think of this before !!!

The photo above was the solution staring right back at me !

Translating the motif above into a template ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2014/186%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/186A%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green%20-%20Spine%20Emboss/011_zps22158c22.jpg

The motif transferred to a cover ...

this is what i mean when the stitches need to be seated on the lower (debossed) surface ..
