There's something I dont understand and want to ask ,

when you put that large dollop of glue on the silk (or cloth for that matter) to begin spreading it all round the fabric, doesnt the glue eventually seep thru to the 'right' side of the silk cloth, damaging it ?

 

I am thinking of an attempt as close to the video clip as possible , but since I cant afford to ruin any silk cloth, I would probably start on a small piece , maybe B5 in size , or at the most, A3 in size.

This is because I dont have M Cellulose to slow down the glue-drying time.

 

My worry is whether the pVA glue will seep thru to the other side of the fabric.

 

I am walking thru the technique mentally, and at the moment, it seems very 'hairy'.

 

Any thoughts , advice ?

 

Your worry is correct, PVA will seep thru and stain the good side of the fabric. The magic here is just Methyl C., no PVA added. It dries clear and what residue appears on the face of the fabric I've found will brush off with a damp paper towel leaving no stain on the fabric. Finding a source in the states is not a problem as most book supply houses seem to offer it (ie John Neal, Talas, Hollanders to name a few). However shipping to your location I'm not familiar with. I've experimented with a variety of fabrics and the closest to silk is a batik fabric that is silk like but most likely synthetic. Suggest you pursue the Methyl C. source and experiment with it before using your silk. Anyone out there know of a source for TML's location. There is a food grade Methyl Cellulose which you might be able to find thru food sources.

 

Also, you might look into rice or wheat paste as an interface glue which you could source easier but I can't offer any experience there.

 

I've also used Heat and Bond, an iron on interface which would be less threatening to your silk.

The spatula or spreading device would have to be perfectly smooth.

From the video's I just viewed, a thin, even spread to fill the back of the fabric, but not unevenly soak through is the issue.

I see an alternate method to the video you showed which includes PVA, which if it's the Polyvinyl I think they refer to, would not be my choice for longevity, though the claim is acid free/archival. Total lack of knowledge in bookbinding so ignore Anything I say ; )

This is a university bookbinding blog which suggests their procedure, and with links, though if it were me, I'd follow the Mr. Sage procedure, testing 1st.

maybe the MC is too thick and gelatinous to pass thru the fabric.

Certainly is less risky.

Your work continues to fascinate me.

With regard to pva and material I had a similar problem with velvet the solution was to apply the pva to the card and allow to almost dry before applying the cloth then heat with an iron.

My idea for the large picture is to make a larger book maybe in landscape format.

 

Keep up the excellent work I often read your thread when I need inspiration.

yes, one of the thumbrules of glueing is always to apply glue on the denser material.

No matter what kind of glue used.

Yes it did occurred to me ,

it does fit in a landscape format ,

but landscape format is not always readily accepted.

Its a less common format.

hence it wasn't my first option.

 

i also find A5 landscape format more inconvenient - it means using A3 size paper, but cutting into size, lengthwise.

I find it troublesome. :(

Well, it is a format I do use occasionally, and I have several. Not the beauties that you make, but I recently used an A5 TR pad as a landscape notebook. It works fine for me.

Cos the recipient wasn't a FP user and didn't mind non-ink-friendly paper.

When you make the sections, do you "fold then cut", or "cut then fold"? Your pages all seem to line up nice and neatly, and you have really nice curve to the corners. I'd love to see how you manage it!

I fold the entire Signature at one go...

I cut my papers into size, then gather the required number of Folios to form one Signature, then fold the Signature.

 

 

To round the corners, I use a corner punch that looks like this ...

I gather all the Folios for one Signature, then punch together , before folding them into a Signature.
