TM,

I liked it best with the peacock design before the cutout - when it was a sort of emboss or deboss, whatever the correct term is... with such a subtly varying level underneath the peacock feathers, that would be beautiful to me. In fact dangerously tempting...

Yeah ,

The deboss emboss patterns were quite nice.

As demonstrated in the green journal above.

But for the peacock feathers, it was not obvious , kinda got lost among the feathers.

I was trying to marry the best of both plain bookcloth and a decorated cover.

How to have both on the cover.

Haven't solved it yet ..... :)

Beautiful! but still thinking of the previous attempt with that paper, which I also liked very much...

But it's always interesting to see you develop a new idea.

I like the orange vs midnite blue colour combo
These threads are Irish linen threads, waxed.
#18 gauge , 4-ply , 'Orange Crush '
You can see that this thread has more body.
Becos It's not flat profile, it forms the stitch patterns very well.
The downside to it is that it bulks up the signatures, seen in this pic, becos they are not flat profile.

The bookcloth inlays are laid flushed with the wrap covers.
This is where a Teflon ($costlier) bonefolder becomes indispensable.
You can't achieve a decent end result without one. :)
Also,
Irish linen thread always gives a better-looking end result.

I am a little undecided , as to whether this has been successful , aesthetic-wise.

Comparing with the first attempt, that one seems better looking.

Hmmmm .... cant put a finger to it....

Opinions anyone ?

( I will try crafting one using plain bookcloth , I am quite sure it will turn out nice )

I'm hoping you will save some of that gorgeous peacock paper. I will definitely want a book with that on the cover! Probably indeed in A6 size, although A5 would be nice. A thin paper inside, and I'd go for red flyleaves and stitches.

But I am not too sure I like the irregularity of the cutouts and shapes that you have made with it here. I think the design itself is already so eyecatching, the cutouts detract a little bit from the design? Even though it is still a beautiful book! But with this design, I'd want all the attention-grabbing in the peacock eyes...

Keep up the good work!

I still have material enough for only 2 A5 (large) sizes left.

Contact me back channel.

Yes , its correct that the Peacock Feathers motif is aesthetically strong enough by itself.

I tried that out to see how 'busy' motifs would look against these spine cutouts.

still experimenting.and observing along the way. :)

Mock-ups are truly invaluable for such processes.

Here, I am trying out a dark bookcloth - the darkest - black ,

to see how the emboss / deboss spine accents will look ....

True to expectations,

the emboss/ deboss effect is noticeable only on a closer look.

So its elegantly subtle.

All black , yet not all plain.

the relief , resulting from shadow and light , adds interest.

I will use orange as accent for hue.

It should be striking.

This is another study ,

on how to have a cover wrap , combined with a deboss / emboss accent feature on the spine.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/001.jpg

This attempt shows the challenge of deciding how and where exactly to end the edge of the cover wrap.

This solution, solves the problem of how to end the overlap neatly when the bookcloth is laid over, making it look 'designed' and not an oversight.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/008.jpg

The emboss / deboss feature is a success so I have decided to keep that idea.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/012.jpg

Flushed level ..

Also the stitch stations are located on the deboss portion, enjoying some protection from abrasion.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/013.jpg

Bummer ..... The overlap is not obvious at all. ...

The Japanese paper is too thin to show up.

No matter, that solution will prove its worth when the cover wrap material is thick enough to show up.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/015.jpg

I will do orange stitches ,

slanted...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/016.jpg

The beautiful paper ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/014.jpg

Also , I have decided to make that edge (between the cover wrap and the bookcloth) zig-zag ...

I feel its more dynamic , providing visual interest , compared to a simple straight edge.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%20101%20SHINWAZOME%20CHIYOGAMI%20%20Maple%20Leaves/101F%20SHIN%20CHIYO%20Maple%20Leaves%20Spine%20Deboss%20Emboss/017.jpg

I like the simplicity of the design.

Plain but not boring. :)

Now I know how to make plain journal covers more elegant. :D

The black bookcloth looks plain from afar ,

but the orange threads bring a stark contrast.

and the slants invite a closer look ,

at the emboss / deboss feature at the spine.
