Working on a commission ....

The brief called for something grey and orange...

as discussions picked up , ideas started to take shape, as they usually do :) .

Till I was motivated to try something of a variant of accents , emplaced on the covers...

The Client suggested Japanese paper , which was a good idea.

Japanese papers are very beautiful.

Some initial sketches ... proposals ...

Then further developed ...

Then I kind of settled on this ...

There was also a request for an initial ...

so the "K" , that was subtle ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8584.jpg

What was needed, I felt , was a very striking Japanese paper to make the covers stand out.

The challenge was to find something that wasn't too feminine. :D

I proceeded to make a mockup first , on A6 size , just to see how things look like ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/002.jpg

I had Japanese paper from long ago,

and I thought of this combination with Midnight Blue Bookcloth ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/010.jpg

after some thot, I felt the leading edge was too straight...

I felt it could be improved , and tried some slants ...

to make it look more dynamic...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/006.jpg

Quite insane actually , the amount of work ...

to cut out the template for subsequent stages ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/009-1.jpg

Then Bummer !

I realized this was gonna be a TR journal (the Client was able to acquire TR paper) , which had 3 pair sewing stations instead of the usual 2.

3 pairs of stations also meant the spine will be a little more 'crowded' , and so I had to refine / adjust the design ...

After sometime of problem-solving , I came up with this revised pattern ...

The red lines represent the stitches.

This is a definite departure from my usual stitches that run perpendicular to the spine edge.

and I am not sure if this will work...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8552.jpg

I wanted to do a deboss for the Japanese paper ,

to keep the paper from abrasion ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8555.jpg

Laid the bookcloth over

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8558.jpg

Then the paper carefully cut out and glued into position ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8586.jpg

What I like about this paper is that the white flowers are raised (embossed) with a latex feel to it...

very elegant ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8578.jpg

This is what the journal looks like.

Imagine the orange flyleaves,

Orange stitches ,

Orange ribbon.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8573.jpg

I think the end result is not very far from what I envisioned.

What can be improved is to narrow down the narrow strips of blue.

The intent is to make the Japanese paper more contiguous , visually....

Anyway,

there's lots of areas to tweak and finetune ...

:)

I chose orange thread for the stitches.

This is Irish Linen thread , #18 gauge , 4-ply, Orange Crush.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8666.jpg

The orange threads matched the orange flowers on the Japanese paper.

And the orange flyleaves

and the orange ribbon pagemarker ...

I added the ribbon on the tail end of the spine too, just to experiment on aesthetics ...

Still experimenting with the patterns of the spine deboss accents ...

Previously ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2013/2013%20Journals/Journal%20173%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bookcloth/173C%20Midnight%20Blue%20Bkcloth%20S%20CHIYOGAMI/DSCF8555.jpg

now this ...

Actually I want to try running the main cover material over to the spine , but incorporated with the accents , all this whilst doing a deboss , emboss effect ...

I just cant solve it.... yet !

Anyway, this attempt hopefully will trigger a solution :)

I realized from the previous Midnite Blue Bkcloth , I thought the spine deboss pattern looked good enough to adorn a journal cover...

So here it goes ...

... Anyway, this attempt hopefully will trigger a solution :) ...

When I read this it reminds me what a great thing it is to keep trying at something. You are a great example, TM, of what can be accomplished through perseverance and learning from experience.

Great work as always - you are a master craftsman at work.

It's good to hear from you :)

Yeah ,

I learnt that one can actually see things in a new light if really forced to.

It's true they say .... it's 99% hard work and 1% inspiration !

Wow these are beautiful!!! Very impressive. I really like the style of your covers, you are an artist.

If I may inquire to where you get your book cover cloth from? I am thinking of attempting a home made journal myself.

Thanks,

Thanks wlwilcox :)

I can't find them locally here where I live.

Some kind friends bought them home for me from Madrid ....

You should try asking the bookbinders near you.

Or shops that sell hobby craft materials etc.

Locally (in the US) you'd have a good chance at finding book cloth at art stores such as Blick, Jerry's Artarama or Artist & Craftsman Supply if one is near you.
Online my two top book cloth suppliers (and preferred places to order due to their wide range of products) are Talas (http://talasonline.com/) and Hollander's (http://www.hollanders.com/). When ordering make sure you know the difference between paper backed and starched cloth. Paper is easier to use as it absorbs the PVA glue and wont bleed through to the cloth (it can, however, if you apply too much glue/pressure). While starched will work with PVA glue it has a much higher risk of bleeding through and staining your cloth, using wheat paste is recommended for starched cloth which adds a whole other process to the mix.
You can also make your own, as TMLee has done and shown beautifully, but book cloth definitely has unique properties.

TM and fraktur, thank you very much. The information on the different types was great.

Still exploring on spine accents ....

This is an attempt to bring the cover graphics over into the spine accent area.

I just cant solve it .... yet !

some sketches ...

The zig-zag line is a narrow trough running thru' ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/002_zps96c64b9c.jpg

Transferring the design onto the covers ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/004_zps528f7a9c.jpg

Now onto the emboss layer...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/006_zps216351ca.jpg

cutting out carefully ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/007_zps00af3499.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/009_zps3647be9b.jpg

I decided to take a leap and use the wonderful paper ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/011_zpsd62c7b98.jpg

bummer ... !

The intricate peacock patterns camouflaged the narrow trough ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/012_zps84373eae.jpg

The channel is there but hard to see,

visible in shadow conditions only ...

decided to continue as planned and see how bad it can get ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/014_zps06999d02.jpg

dont look too nice .... rats .... :(

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/019_zpsb30918b9.jpg

Tried repairing ...

But I didnt feel it held promise...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/018_zps82dd644f.jpg

so I cut out a zig-zag strip to infill the narrow channel ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/021_zps6f0682c9.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/023_zps25804047.jpg

I feel the channel of bookcloth is too narrow ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2013/177%20A5%20Peacock%20Feathers/177D%20Peacock%20Feathers/024_zps7989b721.jpg

I am doubtful if a wider channel will be more aesthetically pleasing.

The beautiful paper helps save the situation somewhat ...

I think this scheme MAY just work with plain colours ,

I dont know ...

Another set of covers going into my shoebox of 'rejects' ....

unless some kind soul wants to $adopt them ?

TM,

I liked it best with the peacock design before the cutout - when it was a sort of emboss or deboss, whatever the correct term is... with such a subtly varying level underneath the peacock feathers, that would be beautiful to me. In fact dangerously tempting...
