This next commission, an A5 size journal, involved initials ...

I usually try to organize the initials into a simple logo, if I can call it that.

some sketch ideas

I decided to go with Option 11 , after considering the design / layout / material of the covers.

(it was to be a bookcloth cover with spine and corner accents. This meant that any monogram or logo needs to fit into such a cover design, both aesthetically and functionally.)

Earlier on, I had already decided on the typeface.

Had to be 'masculine', simple, fuss-free.

Yet not becoming distracting to the completed covers.

Some tryouts ...

Some of the 'T's looked too tall, too short, too squat.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20119%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/Journal%20119A%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/4a6f02de.jpg

Tried out the placement of the initials ..

Also tried modifying the proportions of the 'T'

Settled on a selected typeface and proceeded to create the de-boss on the cover

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20119%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/Journal%20119A%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/9d4d53dd.jpg

Next was deciding the colour combo for the covers.

After a few possible options, I settled on this one ...

Browns and Greens are complementary.

I decided to make the stitches stand out.

A rust orange colour.

I will also use orange flyleaves and ribbon pagemarker.

The final product will be one where the colours are co-ordinated - not gaudy or loud - something that can be brought into a board meeting environment, which was one specified request.

The logo, will be not huge and shouting for attention.

It will be there, obvious only when handheld.

The orange stitches and flyleaves will add that dash of accent.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20119%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/Journal%20119A%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/01d8513b.jpg

The other options considered but not selected...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20119%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/Journal%20119A%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/2aa68931.jpg

The first stage of selecting the right shade of green was toughest, becos of the need to imagine all the colours that would be eventually be employed.

The 3 shades that I had to choose from.

Interestingly, each shade had its own charm and would be attractive in its own right.

In my later journals with spine and corner accents,

I have modified (improved) my technique

I have decided to cover the entire cover in the material, like so...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20119%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/Journal%20119A%20GEMATEX%20Dark%20Olive%20Green/1ea102c5.jpg

The reason for doing so is to achieve a perfect finish to receive the accent which will be applied over it.

TMLee - thank you for documenting and sharing all your wonderful work and evolution in journal creation ... you are an inspiration to us all!

I have successfully made one Coptic stitched journal and am thinking of trying another. For my next one, I want to try using Tamoe River paper (I believe the paper used in the Design Y journals). This paper is very thin (52 gsm) which leads me to my two questions.

1) Do you have any suggestions on number of folios to use per signature for such thin paper?

2) When using such thin paper, would you think folding individual folios from one sheet of paper is best or might I get a better result folding multiple (2? 3?) sheets of paper at a time?

Your youtube folio video was very helpful, thanks so much for making it!

With the paper that thin you want to look at about 8 folios per signature.

It will crease VERY easily but I would still fold it one at a time. Use lighter strokes of the folder. If you are anywhere in the UK, you could practice on some Rymans 45gsm Typing Bond paper first.

Also, with paper that thin you don't have to worry about the paper grain direction.

Thank you for your kind words 'penhand' :D

First of all, a very warm welcome to FPN. :W2FPN:

I haven't used 52g paper before.

It must be very thin.

I am assuming you are doing a single Coptic stitch? Becos if it's a double needle stitch, the strength of the signature to withstand the pull throughs at each station, becomes a factor.

1) When I use thinner paper , I will add folios till the signature becomes sturdy enough to survive the piercings and the pull thru of each station and most of all the tying up at the end of the stitching.

My guess is about 6 or 7 folios in your case.

You can experiment.

You can also experiment by adding other kinds of paper into each signature.

2) I would still fold a folio one by one, but that's me, I want to achieve the neatness and crisp signatures.

If you fold many at one go, you won't get crisp folios and signatures. You will get more rounded folded folios instead of very crisp folds. And Depending on how you pierce your folios , the absence of crisp folds may affect the accuracy of your piercings.

HTH

If you look at the Design.Y journals, you will be able to see if the books are available in page counts of multiples of 12 (6 folio) or 16 (8 folio) and that should tell you how many of the Tomoe River sheets to use.

Daniel and TMLee, thanks for the suggestions. It looks like TMLee's feel for 6 or 7 looks about right given Daniel's astute observation on what Design Y uses. I'll fold each folio individually for crispness and keep you posted on how it goes.

I am humbly posting pictures of my "journal 2" to this wonderful TMLee thread. I hope it encourages others to give it a shot since it really is a lot of fun. A big "shout out" to TMLee for sharing his knowledge, craft, successes and mistakes with us over the years.

Note that I "cheated" on the covers and trimmed a piece of mat board. I wanted something sturdy, thin, nice looking that came in colors, wasn't too expensive and didn't require any additional work other than cutting. We'll see how well it holds up.

I must say that the pocket in back was the most challenging and fun - I made 5 or 6 models or it yesterday to see how to construct it and get the size right. Also, clamping and gluing the spine definitely tightened it all up and really gave it a much more "professional" feel.

Journal 2 - size A7 (shown with a TWSBI 530)

Bookblock - 5 signatures, 7/8 folios each, 76 pages total; Coptic stitched, single needle using a huge spool of heavy polyester thread I've had for years

Paper - Tamoe River, 52gsm

Flyleaves and pocket - Mi-Teintes pastel art paper, 160g

Covers - mat board from the framing store

Did a sketch a long time ago ....

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15494&view=findpost&p=1637019

The Olympus OM-4Ti

a camera i still love very much.

I think its just a superb SLR on so many counts.

Maitani did a really good job.

Remarkable Auto Exposure up to 240secs - Yes 4 mins !!!

Spot metering is available up to eight spot readings.

And its small.

And so handsome.

well ...

I have been meaning to use that sketch on my white series of journals ...

I drew the rear of the camera recently ...

photocopied onto the tested EFALIN paper which is commonly used to cover the hardboards of desktop flip calendars.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2012/2012%20Journals/Journal%20158%20OM-4Ti/872c4361.jpg

Wrapped the covers in them ...

Looks promising ...

I decided to let loose a bit on the flyleaves ...

copying a flyer highlighting its features ..

On the rear pocket flyleaves,

I found this contact print as I rummaged thru my cold-storage of Olympus literature ...

I decided to use it for the rear flyleaves and pockets ..

Here you see the anti drop-out flap in position

The anti drop-out flap removed ...

This is the anti drop-out flap ...

It is meant to fit the other half which was laid onto the front flyleaf like this ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2012/2012%20Journals/Journal%20158%20OM-4Ti/e552ac28.jpg

I am imagining a lot more variants of this journal.

More sketches , when I can find the time ...

then those sketches can decorate the flyleaves etc , even the signatures inside. ...

Hands up all you who love this camera ... !!!

This was an idea from long ago....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2075%20Chocolate%20Lambskin/Journal%2075B%20Choco%20Lambskin%20Red%20Accents/DSCF7778.jpg

I couldnt execute cos I couldnt resolve, in my mind, how to

- cut the 3 strips of red accent leather to fit in exactly.

- make the leathers flush at the same level , if the leathers were to be different in thicknesses.

Last night, in a rare spurt of wanting to DO something BEFORE having a detailed plan of execution, I decided to "Just Do It" ...

I hastily did a sketch of the 3 stripes on the naked greyboard covers.

Then proceeded to transfer the markings onto the leather.

The leather is a nice thin Chocolate colour.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2075%20Chocolate%20Lambskin/Journal%2075B%20Choco%20Lambskin%20Red%20Accents/DSCF7761.jpg

Cut out the strips carefully...

(At first I thot of laying the 2 leathers one atop the other to achieve exactness of fit. But abandoned the idea cos the rolling blade may not cut thru the thickness. The red stripes were cut separately.)

The strips couldnt fit and had to be trimmed down to size.

The underside ...

The red looks nice

Keeping things in place before gluing.

My TAMIYA yellow masking tape is amazing in quality, at least 20 years old and it still works perfect. The glue on the tape remains perfect, tacky and removable but not melted sticky like you usually find in deteriorated tape. I am amazed but not surprised at Japanese quality.

After gluing and clamping overnight ...

The Front cover, done ..

Hmm I recently joined and I instantly got interested in this haha. I was wondering what do you use to make the covers for the journals, namely the hardcover type ones. Cardboard? Was thinking I should just get usps to deliver some priority boxes to my house and use those >.>

a very warm welcome to FPN ... :W2FPN:

hope you are enjoying your stay here ...

covers have been discussed more than once here. Its somewhere in this superlong threadpost.

in short,

we use

bookbinding boards also known as

greyboards, also known as

strawboards ,

depending on where you live. :P

they come in several thicknesses.

they are of the same material as the thin backing of your foolscap writing pad - just thicker.
