Tried again ...

This time on A6 size...

This time I tried doing a set of covers with the crosses only - ie the main part of the graphics ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149A%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6424.jpg

Bcos the fabric didn't keep its shape, I tried using interfacing.

It was ironed on to the back.

It made the fabric thicker.

And it was also difficult to glue. The interfacing material wasn't friendly to glue.

Apart from that, it made the fabric thicker and harder to foldover round the corners.

My corners were not their usual flatness and neatness...

I am gonna try next another A5 size but with more crosses ...

I think it should look just right ...

In comparison with the previous A5 (big) covers ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149A%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6408.jpg

I decided to use gold coloured flyleaves.

To keep the theme simple .

I found this champagne gold metallic paper... the gold sheen is not readily noticeable in the pic ...

Pocket with namecard slot and 'anti drop-out flap' as usual.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149A%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6500.jpg

I also selected the more 'refined' looking white band ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149A%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6498.jpg

Front and back completed

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149A%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6497.jpg

This is Journal #149A SAMPING - White/Gold Crosses , finally completed.

A6 size.

I did this first in order to get a more accurate feel of how it will turn out when fully completed.

Whatever lessons learnt will be replicated or improved upon in #149B - which I just believe and expect to look very nice.

Front with and without the band closure.

I chose Natural coloured stitchcords to blend with the gold threads.

I also chose a matching light gold coloured ribbon pagemarker.

This is the Deboss version ...

I have learnt that cut-outs should always be cut in a manner that tries as much as possible to preserve all parts intact, so that whatever parts left behind can remain usable , possibly as a design variant...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6625.jpg

Since the pelicans were already used in the Emboss design,

Now its using the leftover for a Deboss design.

The black circle leftover is now used.

Pasted onto a coverboard.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6631.jpg

The eyes of both mother and baby pelicans were of a certain size that was difficult to cut out.

Near impossible actually. No ordinary punch can produce that.

So I needed to improvise.

I used a toothpick and sliced off a thin section that corresponded to the diameter of the baby pelican's eyes.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6629.jpg

The tiny toothpick piece of an eye is then glued into position.

PVA glue is fantastic.

Its very strong and dries colourless.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6630.jpg

The pelicans are now recessed, ie will eventually give a debossed effect when the cover material is laid over.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6633.jpg

Another (daylight) view

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6642.jpg

Now that the cover is like so, I am wondering if I should vary the cover material? :hmm1:

My original intention was to craft another black on black cover just like the one above.

But now , i realize there is another option.

What if its covered in translucent or transparent white tissue?

:hmm1:

I chickened out of trying a different approach in the tissue idea...

So here is the matching black paper cover that yielded a Debossed effect.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6651.jpg

I think the baby pelican's eye may have been too thick ... :roflmho:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6652.jpg

Some other view angles ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6655.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6656.jpg

The matching pair - Emboss and Deboss ...

Frankly , I don't know why one looks blacker than the other ... :hmm1:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6654.jpg

The completed pair ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6726.jpg

changed my mind about the green ribbon.

I think it looks better with black.

SO glad to see dot paper - I was holding off on a purchase because I need lines or dots to keep my writing in check. Now the only thing holding me back is m bank account...

Trying out another leather cover ...

This is a bright red leather.

Its thin at 0.5mm thick.

The right side is a glazed bright fire engine red.

The wrong side is a very nice velvety finish

This time I decided to skive down the corners .

But the decision was taken after already gluing onto the greyboards.

This journal is similar to the brown leather one.

But here, I decided to use the wrong side, becos the glazed 'right' side is just too loud for me.

Also this wrong side is very very nice to the touch ... !

  • 2 weeks later...

This is Journal #121A GEMATEX - Indian Red

This is an experiment in lesser signatures.

Here in this specimen , 5 signatures instead of my usual 7.

The result is a thinner journal that feels 'better' in the hand.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20121%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/Journal%20121A%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/DSCF7041.jpg

The ribbon pagemarker is chosen to match the covers.

The dots on the spine somehow give an additional pattern to the otherwise plain spine :P

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20121%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/Journal%20121A%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/DSCF7046.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/GEMATEX%20SERIES/Journal%20121%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/Journal%20121A%20GEMATEX%20-%20Indian%20Red/DSCF7047.jpg

I am having fun with printed dots.

Here I decided to print red dot grids which match the Indian Red of the bookcloth cover.

It matches nicely.

This is Journal #143C BUCKRAM - Lime Green

Its an experiment to try out japanese paper.

This paper is KOKUYO CAMPUS HIGH GRADE CYO-BO PAPER which I reviewed here .

The A4 size paper is perforated with the standard 30holes along one of the long sides.

Its thin at only 100gsm and very smooth as what we expect of Japanese paper.

Its an ivory colour too.

I had to trim off the holes.

So the paper is now narrower.

The resultant journal is therefore narrower than the usual A6 width, but only by a bit.

This journal is now 100mm (instead of 106mm) wide by 150mm tall.

The covers are neither 'bendy' nor hard, since it is slightly thicker.

Neither is it exactly 'SLIMLINE'.

Its slightly thicker than my usual SLIMLINE

Its also due to the waxed linen thread which I used.

The paper here is 100gsm instead of 80gsm.

All these factors add to its thickness.

Of late, I realized I can improve the way the graphics can flow from one cover to the next.

The trick is to foldover the cover material in such a way that allows for the thickness of the bookblock.

Here you see the spine space between the covers that I guesstimate to be the thickness of the bookblock.

Need some advice here ...

Re- attempting applying interfacing on fabric.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20151%20Plain%20Green%20Cotton/DSCF7224.jpg

I find that its very difficult to glue the interfaced fabric onto the bookbinder's board.

The white material of the interfacing is synthetic and doesn't stay put.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20151%20Plain%20Green%20Cotton/DSCF7226.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20151%20Plain%20Green%20Cotton/DSCF7228.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20151%20Plain%20Green%20Cotton/DSCF7229.jpg

I had to wait till the glue is almost dry before executing the foldovers or turn-ins.

Very difficult.

This is the result of a very slow process.

Waiting for the glue to dry on each edge, doing edge by one edge.

After everything is in place, its clamped overnight - the corners.

Even so, they are thickish becos the white synthetic interfacing does not flatten even under clamping.

How do you guys do it?

Any suggestions?

Still, I like the end result very much.

It is different.

It has that slight padded feel to it.

Very nice indeed!

Is this iron-on interfacing, or plain?

Hm. It might be that the heat-activated glue on the interfacing is making it resist sticking. Does the interfacing feel "waxy" to the touch once it's been ironed on?

Do you ever make any of these with a covered spine?

Yes but rarely these days.

I find them more challenging.

No it doesn't.

What is interfacing made of?

It's like gauze, except with a layer of glue on the adhesive side.

Fusible (iron-on) interfacing that's not woven is almost always made of synthetic materials, which I think may be the source of the problem - it would repel any attempts to stick it with water-based glue.
