What is the problem that you are experiencing?

(If it doesn't give a clean cut in one punch, then your punch may be defective. When you have that problem, buy another one. Its a QC problem. The cutting edges of the stainless steel are not precise - probably some deformity - even if ever so slight.)

the punch I have is very inconsistent, I don't always get perfect rounded corners. I also hate doing it folio by folio so I guess a new punch is in order!

Hi Lukas! This is one of my favorite FPN threads : )

I revisit the entire process every once in a while, as TMLee generously engages All in the development of his fine craftsmanship - also the interchange of suggestions, and encouragement to others in their attempts.

Held in one's own hand, TMLee's journals - the attention to every small detail - is breathtaking.

: )

I would like to express my thanks to TMLee - you motivated me making my own books beginning earlier this year, all these wonderfull notebooks you made finally gave me the final push to do it myself and not only buy notebooks that either have paper I don't trust or covers I do not completely love.

It is something really special to have notebooks with the paper you love in the design you love and you know exactly: it is unique.

Additionally there are very few people among my friends who would not be happy when they are given one of them, tailored for them in colour and design.

Thank you very much for inspiring me!

Cheers,

Thank you 'sunsparkle' for your kind words ... :D

Yes it is very satisfying to stitch your own journals becos of the elaborate process of decisions and choices that go into crafting each one.

That, plus the painstaking effort put it, make them very treasured as gifts.

I am especially happy when the recipients are delighted with them, as I am sure you have experienced as well.

Enjoy :D

Right now, I am thinking very hard about how to use my rejected covers , ie, those that are imperfectly done. I just don't believe they are destined for the bin.

Good morning,

put them around bookblocks of lesser quality and use them as scribble books, ink test book, for recipies yourself.

That's what I do - and was astonished how positive people reacted event to these imperfect books.

Haha ...

That is precisely the most obvious option that I don't want to take ...

I have always wanted to do a logo.

My 'first love' of a FP brand ...

Printed the logo (I am not sure which one) from its history of logos.

Its printed on a magazine cover of suitable thickness.

Not too thick, I learnt from experience.

I picked this one becos its easier to cut out the image. Less complicated.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6621.jpg

Cut out the Mother and baby pelican

Further cut out the circle .

This means that I can use one as an EMBOSS and the other as a DEBOSS.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6625.jpg

This is the EMboss placed into position on an A6 size cover ...

I am thinking of a black on black cover.

With Pelikan green for the accents ... :P

The cover was glued very wet intentionally (I don't usually glue so wet. I glue my covers very dry) so that the cover material can hug the embossed motif tightly, taking care to glue the complicated edges everywhere with a small brush.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6635.jpg

The cover material was also wet with water to make it

1) pliable - so that it can better hug the motif ; and

2) further dilute the water based PVa glue to reach the narrow tight places.

I decided to try a black on black scheme.

To make the emboss barely noticeable .

Its only noriceable upclose or when its in your hand, otherwise it'll just be an ordinary black notebook from afar.

How does one say it? ... subtle, yet with surprises ? ....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6636.jpg

It was clamped extra hard between wooden boards with a foam rubber sheet on the emboss, again to press the paper cover into the narrow places.

Unlike usual methods, the cover was not rolled over with a rubber brayer. Doing so, sort of fixes the cover onto the cover without anymore 'give'.

Instead, whilst very wet with glue, its clamped as it, complete with pockets of air bubbles here and there.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/DSCF6637.jpg

I don't have a pic here....

After half an hour or so (it dries slower bcos of the extra amount of water added into the process) the clamps are removed and the cover worked on again.

There are largish pockets of air bubbles everywhere.

But i have learnt from past experience , not to panic now becos it doesnt spoil the end result.

I now squeeze out the air bubbles with the brayer...

and

use my elbows to press fit (as suggested by someone earlier in this thread).

It was clamped again, this time overnight.

(this method works for this paper. I suspect it may not work with other materials - I am unsure.

For example, I am thinking of using (transparent/semi-transparent ) tissue paper to do an emboss (future project), but I am thinking how to tackle those wrinkles and bubbles etc ....

I don't know.

Those of you familiar with working with tissue paper , what do you usually do?

Overnight and

with further pressing into the edges with a burnishing tool to make them more crisply defined.

I have decided on the green black scheme, as is their corporate colours... (or is it? :hmm1: )

The flyleaves are completed

A closer view, with the baby Pelikan eye improved.

The ribbon will also be a matching green as well.

This is the 3rd attempt ...

A5 size.

I think now it looks right !!!

Decided to add more white at the top part by lowering the fabric

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6418.jpg

I prefer this proportion of the graphics here (compared to the previous two) ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6444.jpg

The fabric remains challenging to glue, but i managed to work a way round it ...

I dropped the idea of using interfacing...

Here the foldover corners are flat and neat after clamping ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6419.jpg

Compared against the previous (A5) attempt

I think the proportion of white vs gold looks right here ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6402.jpg

Side by side the smaller A6 version ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6412.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6445.jpg

I finally found the right matching shade of gold flyleaves .....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20149%20A5%20SAMPING%20%20White-Gold%20Crosses/Journal%20149B%20A5%20SAMPING%20-%20White-Gold%20Crosses/DSCF6647.jpg

I expect this journal to be stunning when its completed.

Bcos of the graphics of the crosses against the white background on the fabric cover.

But this journal has to be deskbound, becos of the delicate fabric.

That will be the only drawback.

This is the Deboss version ...

I have learnt that cut-outs should always be cut in a manner that tries as much as possible to preserve all parts intact, so that whatever parts left behind can remain usable , possibly as a design variant...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6625.jpg

Since the pelicans were already used in the Emboss design,

Now its using the leftover for a Deboss design.

The black circle leftover is now used.

Pasted onto a coverboard.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6631.jpg

The eyes of both mother and baby pelicans were of a certain size that was difficult to cut out.

Near impossible actually. No ordinary punch can produce that.

So I needed to improvise.

I used a toothpick and sliced off a thin section that corresponded to the diameter of the baby pelican's eyes.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6629.jpg

The tiny toothpick piece of an eye is then glued into position.

PVA glue is fantastic.

Its very strong and dries colourless.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6630.jpg

The pelicans are now recessed, ie will eventually give a debossed effect when the cover material is laid over.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6633.jpg

Another (daylight) view

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20150%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Emboss/Journal%20150A%20Black%20EFALIN%20-%20Pel%20Deboss/DSCF6642.jpg

Now that the cover is like so, I am wondering if I should vary the cover material? :hmm1:

My original intention was to craft another black on black cover just like the one above.

But now , i realize there is another option.

What if its covered in translucent or transparent white tissue?

:hmm1:

Journal #147B Jet Black Bookcloth

This is a variant of the #147 Jet Black Bookcloth series.

In this variant, i am incorporating a dotted grid photocopied onto the writing paper.

The journal has the usual 7 signatures , yielding 112 writing pages.

However, the first and the last signatures are blank pages. (for occasions that require blank spaces like sketches)

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20147%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/Journal%20147B%20Jet%20Black%20Bookcloth/DSCF6672.jpg

In between these blank signatures are the remaining 5 signatures with dotted grids.

They are intentionally printed as light grey, and barely noticeable.

The grids are 5.56mm apart.

Grids (as opposed to ruled lines) are versatile bcos you can write in any direction.

This is Journal #148 Basic Black - Chevron

A6 size

Pictured with a DDV Standard (black and orange is stunning  )

Fabric covers

Front

Front with band deployed

What I like is that the grey on the elastic band matches the grey chevron on the fabric cover.

Up for sale in Classifieds ... :P

Well I was fortunate enough to get this one and I have to tell everyone it is amazing!

The skill, quality & beauty of this book is awesome. I have already had people notice it on my desk and not hesitate to pick it up and examine it and begin asking me where I got it. All were as impressed as I was.

Being able to look back to the beggining of this thread in 2007 when TMLee started and seeing a few years of progress makes it that much more interesting.

Now I just need a DELTA DOLCEVITA to go with it :puddle:

Thanks again TMLee... :notworthy1:

Thank you Earthdawn for your kind words ... :cloud9:

Yes, I was quite happy with this specimen becos of the challenge posed by the print on the textile.

I had actually tried to match up the chevron lines nicely, flowing from one cover to the next.

Almost there ....

Anyway, do enjoy ... :D

and yes, you need a DDV to go with it ...

black and orange is really stunning ...
