... homemade journal ...

I love those covers! How did you get the "butt joint" to work out so nicely? I would be tariffed to try that on one cover let alone make it even and strait across two. You clearly have made 299 more journals than me or would it be 300 covers or possibly 600? Ahh, I am so far behind! :roflmho:

That's too bad about the corners. I have only made two journals and have already encountered many thing I didn't do only to realize I should have just moments to late. At least it gives you an excuse to make more and keep improving  . I don't know exactly what tools you use to thin your leather but perhaps you could use them to thin the corners of the greyboard giving the extra thickness of the folded corners somewhere go while leaving a level surface when finished. You could do this in combination with thinning the leather to get even better corners if it worked out. But if your tool won't work on the grayboards then that clearly isn't an option.

Hmm good question about the flyleaves. I could see a dark orange rusty color working nicely. It would go with the rustic feeling of the leather covers while adding some color whiteout being too bright. Your leather looks like it is a warm chocolate brown color to me, but leather is really hard to gauge the color of without seeing it in person so I can't tell for sure if a rusty orange color would work well.

The part to be reversed was carefully marked out.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2075%20Chocolate%20Lambskin/Journal%2075A%20Chocolate%20Lambskin/DSCF6303_1.jpg

... and cut with a rotary blade cutter.

(I make it a point to ensure that my cutting blades - whatever kind - are very sharp. Unsharp tools cause all kinds of problems , including injury. To this end, snap blade cutters become the logical choice. The only problem I have is finding a box-cutter that does NOT allow the blade to move left or right at all in its holder. I have been looking at a lot of box cutters but yet to see one that does this. Maybe I should buy one and modify.)

Once you have a very straight and clean cut, the leather piece is reversed, keeping the same adjacent edges abutting each other. In this way you have a higher chance of a 'perfect' butt joint, since both edges have been created by the same cut.

Fabrics, including leather are soft and stretchable , so they will fray if the cutting technique (or tool) is unsuitable. A straightedge with a knife cutting blade, even though fresh and sharp will distort the fabric(leather) because it cuts by a shearing action.

In contrast, a rotary cutter works on the principle of a guillotine.

when ready for gluing, fix everything down to prevent accidental slippages...

I would think the greyboards shouldn't be skived down, especially at the corners. It changes the rigidity of that greyboard, since it now has less material.

:D

Comes with a black band.

And I like the feel of the accent leather very much. Very velvety to the touch.

Trying out another leather cover ...

This is a bright red leather.

Its thin at 0.5mm thick.

The right side is a glazed bright fire engine red.

The wrong side is a very nice velvety finish

This time I decided to skive down the corners .

But the decision was taken after already gluing onto the greyboards.

Thank you so much for such a clear explanation of how to do the but joint! :notworthy1: I picked up a rotary cutter yesterday so I can give this a try soon.

That dark covered leather turned out super nice. The texture of the paper for the flyleaves is awesome... makes me question the smooth paper I just bought for my flyleaves, but I'll just by textured when I use up the smooth.

Those red leather covers look amazing! Any idea what color flyleaves you are going to go with? Also, those corners look super flat I wouldn't have thought thinning them a little would make such a difference.

My next journal is coming along vary nicely. I had to wait for my bookcloth and waxed linen thread to show up but I'm back at it now. All I have to do is stitch it up and then glue the spine. Covers are dark brown fake ( :crybaby:) leather bookcloth, black flyleaves with back pocket, black elastic band, black ribbon page marker, and natural color waxed linen thread.

Here is a quick preview courtesy of my phone camera... I'll post more pictures once I'm done.

Just beautiful! The attention to detail is amazing.

I want to try making a couple of books myself, but I've realized I need more tools and supplies. I made a codex book in a class and really enjoyed it, but all the materials were supplied and were pre-cut for us.

What density/thickness of cardboard do you use for the covers? I found an art supply that has 2 choices, in large sheets, perhaps 24x36in. What do you use to cut something so heavy?

Your journal looks very good.

The hue of the red leather is very , very strong.

I really have no idea what Colour flyleaves yet.

It's such a strong shade. :headsmack:

The corners were skived down very thin as you can see.

To keep them flat , I find it best to clamp them down.

To keep them really flat like what you saw, the folds were made wet with a little water, making the leather 'compress' under clamping.

It's clamped overnight.

Add patience - lots of it. :roflmho:

The best part of such a journal cover is the feel of the velvet suede like texture of the 'wrong' side.

Its very pleasant to the touch.

I suppose you can use it to clean the screens of your iPhone or iPad too ... :roflmho:

BTW, I also just realized that there is an advantage in skiving down the leather AFTER gluing it onto the greyboards.

Having lots of patience will help much ...

Thanks catbookmom, :cloud9:

It's good you have bookbinding courses there . Must've been fun learning stuff from practical demos.

How I wish I have those here.

What's a Codex Book look like? I am not familiar with them.

I use 1.5mm thick greyboards for my A6(small) journals

And I use 2.5mm or 3mm thick greyboards for my A5(big) journals.

How to cut them?

I use an ordinary box cutter with snap blades.

(I don't even use the large bladed heavy duty type.)

The reason is becos I want the edges, both cut pieces, to have perfectly undamaged edges.

The thinner the blade, the lesser the chances of the cut edges being marred by a rough cut.

(greyboard or strawboards are paper pulp after all, so you can imagine how 'fragile' they are even though they are 'rigid'. Observe the damage when you see its corners dented)

A steel straightedge is also necessary.

Cutting is more technique than anything else.

You also need a rubber cutting mat to let your blade cut into it, instead of glass or any other hard surface which damages your blade.

As in all cutting techniques, you do not cut at one pass.

You make many, many cutting passes.

Until the piece falls away from your last cut.

Again, patience is key.

I use a tri-square also to keep my covers 90deg square.

The strawboards (yes, they come in 24x36inches) are NOT perfectly square. They are just roughly square in their corners. A tri-square will immediately show you how square the corners are not.

All the best as you embark on your next journal ... :P

This is a trio of journals made on commission which called for an 'aviation' theme.

I originally had in mind , some nice sepia sketches by DaVinci or some blueprints of early inventions of planes.

After many days of searching for such material, I was a little disappointed in not being able to find something that could use to adorn the journal covers.

The closest I got was this print. Clearly centering around flight or interpretations of flight and its early ideas.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20141%20-%20A5%20-%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/Journal%20141A%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/DSCF5293.jpg

The balloons offered a 'better' solution for the journal covers bcos the graphics were not overly large to be lost on the covers.

With the agreement of the Owner, we settled on using this side of the paper bearing interesting variants of balloon-powered flying machines.

Being more proficient with A6 dimensions, i started with the covers for the A6 sized journal.

I decided on a spine bookcloth accent becos I felt the turquoise and black hues on the covers needed some accent colours.

Preparing the covers for the spine bookcloth accent.

From recent examples, I continued to employ this newly discovered technique of preparing the underlayer that will receive the spine bookcloth.

One of the challenges I experienced was to create that spine accent that will sit flush with the rest of the cover.

As illustrated in my earlier examples, you see here the main coverpaper sitting on a cut-to-size underlay pasted onto the greyboard cover.

This is the easy part.

The more difficult part was to eliminate any traces of the underlay beneath the spine bookcloth - especially along the seam where bookcloth meets paper.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20141%20-%20A5%20-%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/Journal%20141A%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/DSCF5335.jpg

The A6 covers pictured with the Sailor 1911 Profit Summer Yellow

The graphics are cut from one single piece. The graphics flow from one cover to the next, interrupted only by the spine accent.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20141%20-%20A5%20-%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/Journal%20141A%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/DSCF5332.jpg

What next became challenging was selecting the colour of the spine bookcloth accent that will complement and not overwhelm the subdued hues on the covers ...

Some tryouts ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20141%20-%20A5%20-%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/Journal%20141A%20Hot-Air%20Balloons/DSCF5337.jpg

I settled on this one ...

Its chroma was not bright enough to overwhelm the covers.
