This is Journal #138 "Grey EFALIN - "SS" Emboss" crafted on commission.

Front with and without the band deployed

The commission called for the incorporation of the initials "SS".

Becos of the curves of the alphabets, i decided against using it within a (angular) window fret design like the embosed journals featured above.

I tried to turn the initials into some sort of a monogram.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20138%20Grey%20EFALIN%20-%20SS%20Emboss/DSCF4959.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20138%20Grey%20EFALIN%20-%20SS%20Emboss/DSCF4962.jpg

This time though, I used my elbow !!!!!

I decided to use paper for the cover material after having experienced very successful results as seen in the white journal above with a chinese nameseal embossed.

The results here are also excellent.

The paper was able to cling to the underlay alphabet cutouts very well.

The fleshy part of the elbow was gentle enough on the paper cover material.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20138%20Grey%20EFALIN%20-%20SS%20Emboss/DSCF4967.jpg

The monogram was also placed on the rear cover so the band would not interfere with it.

The finished result on the rear cover ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20138%20Grey%20EFALIN%20-%20SS%20Emboss/DSCF4995.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20138%20Grey%20EFALIN%20-%20SS%20Emboss/DSCF4998.jpg

Light grey paper was chosen in order to show up the embossing most clearly.

White is also excellent but has disadvantages.

It is going to a gent, hence the choice of a hue thats not too feminine.

I decided on a blood red for the flyleaves and the stitches to create some accent.

Wow, that's stunning! :)

This is Journal #135 "Deep Saffron Yellow" - the first of a trio of journals commissioned.

The commission called for a trio of journals with a floral theme - specifically orchids. But unfortunately I couldn't find any.

Instead, I found alternative floral designs which I thought might suit the recipients.

I chose this becos the print was stunning.

Contained a few hues from deep maroon to orange and yellow.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20135%20Deep%20Saffron%20Flowers/DSCF4890.jpg

The covers done .

Its designed to receive a spine bookcloth accent that will be flushed level with the coverboard.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20135%20Deep%20Saffron%20Flowers/DSCF4888.jpg

I had decided to craft a journal that had a bookcloth spine accent.

And the hues were so great that I had a hard time deciding which accent to use.

some possibilities ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20135%20Deep%20Saffron%20Flowers/DSCF4901.jpg

I finally settled on this Indian Red bookcloth.

I felt that the print was nice enough that it shouldn't have to compete with the spine bookcloth accent.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20135%20Deep%20Saffron%20Flowers/DSCF4906.jpg

The spine bookcloth accent completed.

It is flushed level with the cover.

In wanting the covers to stand out, I downplayed the spine accent,

I also selecting a stitchcord with a colour that would allow it to stay in the background and not compete with the covers.

This is Journal #136 "Hibiscus - Beige" - the second in the trio of journals commissioned.

Also having a bookcloth spine accent.

Also having a flushed level design.

I tend to like graphics that are clearly delineated

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF4887.jpg

Here the covers completed and awaiting a suitable bookcloth accent.

As above, a few possibilities ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF4895.jpg

I settled on this ...

Its a deep purple bookcloth

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF4921.jpg

This time round, I varied the combination ...

In this journal, the stitches do not fade in the background but actually match the hue on the cover.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF5041.jpg

The flyleaves were intentionally contrasting hues

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF5043.jpg

I like this paper for the texture it gives.

More classy

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20136%20Hibiscus%20-%20Beige/DSCF5042.jpg

This is Journal #137 "Hibiscus - Salmon" - the third and last of the trio of journals commissioned.

This print is similar to the above except for the Salmon Pink hue.

Yes its pink but its a shade that is not the jarring type.

Its a little subdued...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20137%20Hibiscus%20-%20Salmon/DSCF4885.jpg

The salmon pink hue has fewer colours to match and complement with

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20137%20Hibiscus%20-%20Salmon/DSCF4892.jpg

I settled on this SAIFU Salmon Pink for the bookcloth spine accent

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20137%20Hibiscus%20-%20Salmon/DSCF4925.jpg

This time round , I tried another different combination.

Unlike the above , the stitches here in this journal don't match the hues on the cover but instead match the flyleaves.

I chose a cobalt blue flyleaf. Something strong and totally contrasting.

The rationale being that there is already a lot of pink on the covers.

Still experimenting with embossing ...

simple logos are very tempting ...

and so I retrieved my stash of material stored away for future use , though I really don't know exactly for what .

I stow away a lot of material too nice to toss into the bin.

And this is one such example.

I have always dreamt of doing a floorplan on a cover.

At that time, I dreamt only of a 2D image.

But now that I have a little experience in embossing, it now becomes a search for a suitably uncomplicated floorplan to carry out an emboss.

And what better choice than Le-Corbusier's iconic design - Ronchamp ...

And fittingly, continuing the "Le-Corbu" series of journals , this is what I attempted ...

Found a suitable floorplan and size,

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5078.jpg

Proceeded to cut out the plan

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5082.jpg

Carefully aligned the 'negative' part on the coverboard

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5083.jpg

and proceeded to paste them into exact position...

Its delicate and challenging bcos the pieces were very small and narrow.

Hard to handle even with tweezers...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5085.jpg

The floorplan completely transferred onto the coverboard

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5087.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5088.jpg

Again, I decided to put the emboss on the rear cover so that the band closure doesnt disrupt it when deployed

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5089.jpg

The next part is how to glue the cover paper ..... ?

I foresee a delicate operation ahead bcos the relief is spread over a large area.

This means that any paper laid over it will have little room to move whilst I tamp down the entire piece of paper onto the relief....

Maybe , put more glue ? or glue it wetter , delaying the drying process?

I decided to glue the coverboard wetter than normal for two reasons :

- to prolong the glue drying time and

- i thought the fragile pieces would dislodge if I had brushed dryly as I usually do. (my usual gluing on the coverboards is at least twice or three times dryer than this. When the boards are too wet from too much glue like here or worse , it will create all sorts of problems in the subsequent stages)

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5091.jpg

The paper cover put into place

Sidelit view to show the relief ...

It was pretty dicey... the paper became very damp and seemed to threatened to give way or distort...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20116%20Le%20Corbu/Journal%20116A%20Le%20Corbu%20-%20Ronchamp%20-%20embossed/DSCF5095.jpg

About an hour later ...

still not too promising

A day after ...

somewhat better after a thorough drying out .....

To all of you here who are conversant with sewing and all things related to sewing ....

I have a query or two ...

I found this kind of mull , where it had an adhesive backing.

This adhesive backing looks like plastic.

It melts into glue when it is placed in direct contact with a piece of fabric, then ironed over under low heat.(i discovered the hard way :headsmack: )

Here a pic of the mull - the non-adhesive side...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Adhesive%20Mull/DSCF5287.jpg

I retrieved a piece of black cotton fabric and experimented...

It seemed to work well , much to my relief.

I had earlier used a similar material but its adhesive backing was not as extensive as this one. That one had adhesive that was like sparsely spread over the entire material, like gluey dots all over. I ironed over it but it didnt stay put.

This one is like one entire sheet of adhesive and it sticks firmly thruout the fabric and I am very happy :D

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Stationery%20Paraphernalia/Adhesive%20Mull/DSCF5286.jpg

The question is :

what is such material commonly used for?

And why?

I am thinking of making bookcloth DIY but I know this is not it.

Bookcloth uses tissue with adhesive and ironed over fabric.

I can't find that material here.

I can see the advantage of this -

in that the fabric stays put and keeps its shape.

It can't stretch and distort.

I suppose it prevents or minimises fraying at the edges too.

and I think it protects the fabric from whatever glue or substance on its underside, especially when gluing onto the coverboards.

I am thinking of wrapping the bookcovers with this backing.

I haven't tried it so I don't know what will become of it.

I suppose there will be that slight 'give' or cushion to the touch.

Thanks in advance .

I don't know anything about sewing.

What you have there is a woven, iron-on Interfacing, Interfacing is found as the middle layer in a collar or stiffens a shirt front placket where the shirt has buttons, or buttonholes. Interfacing is used internally in garments beneath the fabric, between layers of fabric where more weight or body is needed.

Interfacing can be purchased in different weights and with or without adhesives to affix it to fabric.

Thanks Kathleen for yr reply :)

Yes ... Now I remember .... Interfacing - that's what's it's called.

Yes they come in different thicknesses. I chose the thinnest.

Yes - when more 'body' is required.

Now I am wondering if I need to use interfacing, if at all :)

Hmmmm ....

This is Journal #122 GEMATEX - Dark Purple crafted on order ....

I like plain journals for their understated elegance...

It will survive all sorts of (fluctuating) moods ....

It'll withstand passing fads ...

It won't look out of place wherever you take it (i think ) :P

This one is a rich dark purple , almost regal ... almost ... :)

For such kinds of plain solid colours, the stitchcords have to be something contrasting ...

I decided on a nice olive drab.

The paper is textured.

The ribbon is kept a matching yellow

There was a post here that mentioned about buckram and I remembered I had forgotten about the few pieces of Buckram that I had in my possession.

and so,

This is Journal #142 "BUCKRAM - Orange"

Its a very bright orange ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5402.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5408.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5409.jpg

I chose black to keep the number of colours to a minimum...

Black flyleaves as well.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5406.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5415.jpg

I decided to try something different with this journal.

The bookblock consisted of 3 different kinds of writing paper.

I placed the kraft-like paper (120gsm) in the centre.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5407.jpg

The kraft-like paper , not bad actually, I was quite impressed.

Took ink without any problems whatsoever.

The plus point is that it is not rough like kraft paper but smooth.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5411.jpg

Either side of the middle signature was this hammer embossed paper , very smooth. Light grey 100gsm

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2011/2011%20JOURNALS/Journal%20142%20BUCKRAM%20-%20Orange/DSCF5413.jpg

Lastly , the usual Light grey paper , smooth 124gsm occupied the first and last 2 signatures.

This is Journal #92E Basic Black also made on order ...

Its a plain but elegant journal.

100% black cotton fabric.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5278.jpg

Plain fabric and bookcloth journal covers look deceptively simple to make.

They actually require extra care whilst crafting.

Glue stains , no matter how tiny, are very difficult to remove without leaving behind a visible stain.

I already have a few stained covers lying around.

They'll end up becoming my own personal journals ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5279.jpg

This journal colour theme is slightly different from its other variants. (of course !)

This one is stitched with a Rust coloured waxed linen thread.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5281.jpg

I like black fabric journals becos of the texture of both the threads and the covers.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5282.jpg

The Dolce Vita is used in the pic becos its visually striking

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5285.jpg

The flyleaves are likewise matched

and so is the ribbon pagemarker

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092E%20Basic%20Black/DSCF5284.jpg

The inktestpage and Colophon

The paper in this journal is different.

It is ZETA Natural White WOVE , 150gsm.

Highly recomended
