This is Journal #92B "Basic Black" but in A5 (big) size ...

Pictured with the OMAS MoMA HT Trim ...

This one is similar to the previous one in A6 size in the same colour co-ordinates.

The stitches are waxed linen thread in 4-ply and #18 gauge.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092B%20A5%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2968.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092B%20A5%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2969.jpg

The thinner cords need a little more care in tensioning.

After so many journals, I finally figured out how to tension the threads just right... :headsmack:

Here you see several macro shots of the various stations showing a consistency in its sizing or whatever you call it ...

This journal is one good specimen bcos of the consistency of the stitches ... http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092B%20A5%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2982.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2092%20Basic%20Black/Journal%2092B%20A5%20Basic%20Black/DSCF2980.jpg

The flyleaves and ribbon pagemarker are kept matching in hue ...

I am fairly certain it is north central France. The shield is similar to a number of modern provinces but matching that does not work well. I looked at a few map but matching the area of focus is not easy. Still I am certain it is a map of a historic province of France, which it is is another story. There are some maps to compare it to at my alma mater. You might have better results as you have the paper in front of you.

Need money for pens, must make good notebooks. :)

Can someone tell me for sure where is this place ?

I am guessing France.

The map shows the former Roman province of Biturigum, modern French province of Cher. The capital of Cher is Bourges which should be at the center of your map (hard to tell from the small scans, but "Biturigum" was readable).

(with the provinces of Nièvre (Niver) to the northeast, Allier (Bourbonois) to the southeast, ??? (Beaulse) to the west, and ??? (Souloigne) to the northwest)

Another map of the area of Biturigum:

Dear 'cerement',

Thank you so much for your reply.

It is most helpful. :-)

Just curious, is Paris anywhere on this map?

What is the approximate date/period of this map ?

Lastly, I shall be most honoured if you can give a name to this quartet of journals bearing this map on it's covers. :-)

Many thanks

Did a little more searching and came up with an original for your map:

http://www.orteliusmaps.com/book/ort39.html

Looks like the original was drawn (best guess) sometime around 1560

Paris wouldn't be on the map, but almost directly north, Biturigum became department of Cher in the Centre region. Paris is in its own department in the Ile-de-France region:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:France_departements_regions_narrow.jpg

As for a name, since most of your series to date have been named fairly literally, I would recommend "Cartographie" to stay in character.

(I would also say it pretty much requires a soft ivory or cream French-made paper for the text block :P )

COWABANGA :yikes:

Amazing you managed to find the original or close to it .... :clap1:

I was thinking more of "Biturigum ca.1560" since the map is really specific...

or ..

"Cartographie - Bitvrigvm ca.1560"

Yes the bookblock will be cream coloured, altho its not French made :)

Thanks a bundle .... most helpful... :D

Thanks to 'cerement' , I have decided to name this quartet of journals :

Journal #125 "Cartographie - Biturigum ca.1560"

In my excitement to see how the completed journal may eventually look, I quickly wrapped the covers on the greyboards....

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF2985.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF2988.jpg

I was quite happy I did not use a green bookcloth becos this grey green olive drab was more suitable.

This bookcloth was subdued enough to not overwhelm the graphics on the map.

Pictured with a Montegrappa Extra 1930 Green Marble.

This journal is the A5 member of the quartet.

This is how the map fits into each cover , with a little loss on the foldover portions

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF3004.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF3005.jpg

The next task is selecting a co-ordinated colour of the stitch thread...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF2996.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF2999.jpg

I settled on this Country Red of waxed linen thread bcos there is such a hue on the map.

How fittingly it is called Country Red - that thread ...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/MAPS/Journal%20125%20Cartographie%20-%20Biturigum%20ca1560/DSCF2993.jpg

The next task would be finding an equally appropriate coloured flyleaf and the ribbon pagemarker that would both match the stitches..

For now ... :)

I think it looks promising ....

I got my 92B from Lee today and am very very happy to see and use the journal. It's like the first time I am seeing my handwriting without a hint of feathering or bleed through. All I can say is Wow! :notworthy1: and thanks Lee. Well worth the small investment!

The quartet of journals - #125 Cartographie - Biturigum ca.1560 continued ...

This is #125B (A6L) the A6 landscape version ...

For some reason , this journal seems to be the best looking among the four ...

The spine here has not been glued yet.

#125A is the 'standard' A6 version ...

I thot it might accentuate the aesthetics ...

The "Cartographie" Quartet is beautiful - !

Very, very nice work - !

I'm sure that the extra "stations" on the "tiny" A7 were an intricate and detailed process, though.

Great stuff!

Thanks David for your encouraging words ... :cloud9:

Yes it was a little bit more work for the A7 mini but well worth it ...

I am happy you like the quartet ... :D

This is Journal #63D "Tracks - Batik" crafted on order ...

Batik fabric with a modernist graphic touch ....

I like the abstract interpretation.

This journal is slightly different.

I am using bookcloth to create the spine and corner accents.

Much like a ledger style.

I decided to lay the bookcloth over the fabric.

So first the fabric was carefully cut to an exact size and then glued onto the greyboards into its exact position.

I decided on a 3mm overlap so it had to be accurate.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3175.jpg

The covers done

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3177.jpg

Not surprisingly, the bookcloth gave very good workability . Enabling perfect foldovers round the corners.

I like bookcloth :D

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3184.jpg

I sort of scored the overlap edges to create a more defined overlap.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3182.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3181.jpg

The stitching completed ..

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3209.jpg

The corner accents were sized such that they are nicely positioned when the band closures are deployed.

It leaves the corner visible thru a gap that is neither too big nor small.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3219.jpg

Fullspread

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3217.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3218.jpg

I decided on stitches - red - to match the fabric, leaving the rest of the other hues to be totally contrasting such as the powder blue flyleaves and the bookcloth accents that were a very deep purple.

The ribbon was also blood red to match the stitches.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3216.jpg http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3214.jpg

I decided to give another try to incorporate a namecard slot into an A5 size journal pocket.

For a long time I couldn't solve the problem of inserting a namecard slot that would be effective.

The concept was a pocket within a pocket.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/Journal%2063%20Tracks%20Batik/Journal%2063D%20A5%20Tracks%20Batik/DSCF3224.jpg

The namecard slot anti 'drop-out" flap opened

This is a very first attempt and I am undecided how to finish the flap.

This pic shows the other end of the flap which I cut into a vee to allow the namecard to showthrough.

The Owner has the privilege of trying out either way. :D

Will experiment more on this.

Inktestpage and Colophon

The GEMATEX material is great.

I expect a longer lifespan with these covers.
